अनुकृति उपाध्याय अंग्रेज़ी दोनों भाषाओं में लिखती हैं और ख़ूब लिखती हैं। हिंदी वाले उनको अपने कथा संग्रह ‘जापानी सराय’ के लिए याद करते हैं तो अंग्रेज़ी में आजकल वह अपने उपन्यास ‘किंसुगी’ के कारण चर्चा में हैं। फ़िलहाल आप उनकी नई कहानी पढ़िए ‘बिल्लियाँ’। समकलीं कथाकारों में कहानी लिखने का ऐसा हुनर बहुत कम लोगों के पास है। आप कहानी पढ़कर बताइएगा-

‘मैं कुछ दिनों से सोच रहा था कि एक बिल्ली पाल लूँ,’ मेरे पति ने चाय का घूँट ले मुँह सिकोड़ा और कप मेज़ पर रख दिया।
मैंने हैरत से उसे देखा, इसलिए नहीं कि उसे चाय पसंद नहीं आई, अगर चुटकी भर पत्ती कम हो या छटाँक भर दूध ज़्यादा तो उसके लिए चाय का स्वाद बिगड़ जाता है और दिन भर उस बिगड़े स्वाद की स्मृति उसकी जुबान पर अटकी रहती है , बल्कि इसलिए कि मुझे तो कभी यह शुबहा भी नहीं हुआ था कि उसे बिल्लियाँ पसंद हो सकती हैं।
मेरे पति को सुबह-सवेरे बात करने की आदत नहीं है। वह बहुत कच्ची नींद सोता है और रात भर सच्ची और काल्पनिक आवाज़ों पर चित-पट करता रहता है। नतीजतन सुबह उनींदा और थकन में डूबा जागता है। दूसरी तरफ़ मैं हूँ – ऐसी गहरी नींद सोती हूँ जैसी बड़े ज़रूरी सपने देख रही होऊँ। मुझे सुबह या किसी भी और समय बतियाने में कोई दिक्कत नहीं और न चुप रहने में। रेशम के कीड़े जैसे अपने विचारों के तंतुओं को अपने चारों ओर मुलायम खोल सा लपेट कर दिन बिताना मुझे आता है। लेकिन आज वह कहता गया, ‘कल रात मैंने बिल्लियों को लड़ते देखा, दो बिल्लियाँ , दोनों सफ़ेद और नारंगी रंग की। अगर मैंने अपनी आँखों से देखा नहीं होता तो कभी विश्वास नहीं करता कि दो बिल्लियाँ ऐसा कोहराम मचा सकती हैं। ऐसे चीख-पुकार रही थीं जैसे एक दूसरे के ख़ून की प्यासी हों और एक-दूसरे को एकदम चीड़-फाड़ देंगीं। फ़ेसिनेटिंग सीन था।’
कल रात उन रातों में से थी जब कि सब कुछ- हवा से बेतरतीब बादल, दीखता-लुकता चाँद, धरती की हरी भीगी गंधें – सब कुछ मन को बेचैन करने वाला होता है। ऐसी रातों, खाना-पीना निबटाने के बाद हम बिस्तर और नींद की कुछ पहरों वाली मृत्यु की शरण लेते हैं। कल रात भी हम जल्दी सो गए थी, कम से कम मैं तो सो ही गई थी। मैं सोचने लगी कि उसने बिल्लियाँ देखी कहाँ होंगी? ‘अच्छा, बिल्लियाँ थी…’ मैंने कुछ कहने के लिए कहा और ये जताने के लिए भी कि मैं सुन रही हूँ।
‘बिल्ले भी हो सकते थे, इतनी दूर से कहना मुश्क़िल है, पीछे वाली गली में लड़ रहे थे, पीपल वाली झुग्गी के ठीक सामने। मैंने उन्हें खिड़की से देखा।’ उसने जैसे मेरे अनकहे प्रश्न का उत्तर दिया। मेरा पति कभी-कभी ऐसा करता है – उन प्रश्नों के उत्तर दे डालता है जो मैंने अभी पूछे ही नहीं। मुझे वैसे भी ज़्यादा प्रश्न पूछने की आदत नहीं। अगर हम ग़ौर से सोचें तो पाएँगे कि बहुत ही कम प्रश्नों का उत्तर पूछने पर मिल पाता है, सारे ज़रूरी प्रश्नों का समाधान तो ख़ुद ही ढूँढना पड़ता है और मैं यह पहले से ही जानती हूँ कि करेला उसे तला हुआ पसंद है और लहसुन से उसे एलर्जी है। ‘इतना शोर मच रहा था लेकिन तुम बिल्कुल बेखबर सोती रहीं। ऐसे शोर में कोई कैसे सो सकता है?’ उसके स्वर में आरोप था। ‘एक-दूसरे पर झपट कर पड़ रहीं थीं दोनों, पूरी गली में एक छोर से दूसरे छोर तक गुत्थम गुत्था हो रही थीं। और गुर्रा ऐसे रही थीं कि रोंगटे खड़े हो जाएँ।’
‘अच्छा…’
‘हाँ और मैं अकेला ही नहीं देख रहा था, दो दर्शक और भी थे – दो ज़रा छोटी बिल्लियाँ, दोनों अगल बग़ल दीवार पर बैठी थीं और ऐसे देख रही थीं जैसे लड़ाई देखने के लिए टिकट ख़रीदा हो!’ उसने पिछली गली की ओर खुलने वाली खिड़की की तरफ़ नज़र डाली, ‘ जाने किस चीज़ के लिए इस तरह लड़ रही थीं…’
सचमुच ऐसा क्या हो सकता है जिसके लिए ऐसे लड़ा जाए, मैंने सोचा? खिड़की से, धूप की सुनहरी ज़िल्द चढ़ी पीपल के पुराने पेड़ की डालियाँ दिखाई दे रही हैं। मैं जानती हूँ कि पीपल की जड़ें सड़क-किनारे की छिछली मिट्टी और सड़क की कंक्रीट में जैसे-तैसे जमी हैं, लेकिन पत्तियाँ अभी तक खूब दिखावटी और हरी हैं। मैंने गली में बत्तियों के मटमैले, पीले प्रकाश में एक-दूसरे पर झपटतीं, लड़ती बिल्लियों की कल्पना करनी चाही, लेकिन मैं नाकाम रही और कोई चित्र नहीं उभरा। अलबत्ता दीवार पर बैठीं, दूसरों को जूझता देखती बिल्लियों की की कल्पना करने में मुझ कोई अड़चन नहीं आई – शालीनता से पंजे समेटे, कान खड़े किए, अलग-थलग बैठीं दो छायाएँ, अचंचल, बस कभी कभी पूँछें डुलातीं। ‘उस गली में हमेशा से बिल्लियाँ रहती हैं,’ मैंने इस नीयत से कहा कि उसे यह न लगे मेरी बिल्लियों वाली बात में कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं। ‘मैंने उस झुग्गी में रहने वाली औरत को अक़्सर उनके लिए भात और ब्रेड डालते देखा है।’ यह सच भी था। लगभग हर शाम मैं खिड़की पर खड़े हो सूरज को गली के उस पार की बिल्डिंगों के पीछे डूबते देखती हूँ। दिन की रोशनी रहते वह औरत झुग्गी से निकलती है और शायद दिन-भर का बचा खाना बिल्लियों के लिए एक किनारे डाल देती है। वह हमेशा एड़ियों तक झूलती, ढीली-ढाली, सूती मैक्सी पहने होती है और छाती और उभरे पेट पर एक बैंगनी दुपट्टा डाले। कभी कभी वह रुक कर अपने रूखे बालों का जूड़ा खोलती है और उन्हें फिर से लपेटते हुए, बिल्लियों को खाते देखती है। फिर झुग्गी से उठती प्रेशर कुकर की सीटी की तीखी आवाज़ पर चौंक कर धीरे-धीरे भीतर चली जाती है। हफ़्ते में एकाध बार जींस और रंगीन सूती कमीज़ पहने एक दुबला-पतला, घुंघराले झब्बेदार बालों वाला जवान लड़का आता है। उन दिनों वह औरत बाहर रुकती नहीं तुरंत भीतर हो जाती है और पीछे-पीछे वह लड़का भी जो उम्र में उससे काफ़ी छोटा दिखता है।
‘हाँ, मैंने उसे भी देखा।’ मेरे पति ने कहा। मैं ध्यान से सुनने लगी। इतनी रात को वह औरत गली में क्या कर रही होगी? ‘तुम अगर देखतीं कि वो कैसे लड़ रहे थे और जान लेने-देने पर तुले थे तब तुम्हें पता चलता।’ मुझे यह समझने में एक क्षण लगा कि वह फिर से बिल्लियों के बारे में बात कर रहा था। ‘एक ने दूसरी का कान दाँतों से पकड़ लिया और दूसरी उसे घूँसों से मार रही थी। तुम विश्वास नहीं करोगी, बाक़ायदा बॉक्सर की तरह पंजा पीछे खींच कर, पूरे शरीर के वज़न के साथ घूँसे मार रही थी। ऐसा लग रहा था कि WWF वाली लड़ाई हो रही हो और किसी भी हथकंडे से ऑपोनेंट को हराना हो।’ उसने आश्चर्य दिखाने के लिए अपनी भौंहें उचकाईं। ‘मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि बिल्लियाँ असल में ऐसे ख़ून के प्यासे जानवर होते हैं, देखें में कैसी शांत, मुलायम दिखती हैं।’
‘बिल्लियाँ शिकारी जीव हैं,’ मैंने कहा, ‘बहुत फ़ुर्तीली और तेज़ होती हैं, एक सेकेण्ड में शिकार को दबोच लेती हैं। मैंने उन्हें कितनी बार कबूतरों-चिड़ियों को ताक में देखा है, एकदम स्टॉक करती हैं उन्हें।’
‘ छोटे जानवरों का शिकार करने और इस तरह लड़ने में कोई सिमिलॅरिटी नहीं, दोनों एकदम अलहदा बातें हैं, तुम नहीं समझोगी।’ उसके स्वर में मेरी नासमझी पर शिकायत थी। ‘तुम्हें देखना चाहिए था,’ उसने दोहराया, ‘देखे बिना समझा ही नहीं जा सकता। वे बिल्लियों सी लग ही नहीं रही थीं, एकदम अलग दिख रही थीं, जंगली जानवरों जैसी। और उनकी चीखें…’ उसने मेरी ओर देखा, ‘ तुमने सच में बिल्कुल कुछ नहीं सुना कल रात?’
‘ना,’ मैंने सर हिलाया।
उसने गहरी साँस ली, ‘उनकी लड़ाई देखने से मतलब रखती थी।’ वह चुप सोच में खो गया।
‘शायद वो औरत बिल्लियों के शोर की वजह से झुग्गी से निकली हो?’ मैंने कुछ देर उसके बोलने का इंतज़ार करने के बाद कहा।
‘हँह, क्या?’ उसने आँखें झपकाईं, ‘नहीं, शोर-वोर के कारण नहीं। बिल्लियों के चिल्लाने से तो वो आदमी निकल कर आया था। औरत तो बाद में आई जब कि बिल्लियाँ भाग चुकी थीं।’
मैं अचकचा गई। बिल्लियों के ड्रामे में नए नए किरदार जुड़ते जा रहे थे। उसने अभी तक किसी आदमी का तो ज़िक्र ही नहीं किया था।
‘मैं यहाँ खड़ा-खड़ा बैटल देख रहा था कि ये आदमी कहीं से निकला पड़ा, दुबला-पतला-मरियल, घुंघराले बालों वाला और दोनों योद्धाओं पर पत्थर फेंकने लगा। ख़ैर, वो तो उसने अच्छा ही किया, मैं ख़ुद भी सोच रहा था कि क्या करूँ, फ़ोन करके गेट पर से गार्ड को बुलाऊँ वरना दोनों में से एक तो मरेगी ही कि ये इंसान आ गया और कंकर-पत्थर बरसाने लगा। जैसे ही उसने पहला पत्थर फेंका, जैसे जादू हुआ हो – दोनों लड़ाकू उड़नछू, एक सेकेण्ड पहले घमासान मचा है, चीख-पुकार हो रही है और एक सेकेण्ड बाद गली ख़ाली। बस दूर से भगोड़ों की गुर्राहटें कुछ देर तक सुनाई देती रहीं।’ उसने अपनी बात का रस लेते हुए फिर से भौंहें उचकाईं । ‘और सिर्फ़ लड़ाकू ही नहीं, दीवार पर बैठी उनकी ऑडिएंस भी ग़ायब। उस आदमी ने सबको रफ़ा दफ़ा कर दिया।’
‘तो वो औरत क्यों बाहर आई जब लड़ाई बंद हो गई थी और गली में शान्ति हो गई थी?’
‘एक लड़ाई बंद हो गई थी,’ मेरे पति ने रहस्य के अंदाज़ में कहा ‘और दूसरी शुरू होने वाली थी। वो आदमी गालियाँ बकते हुए पत्थर फेंके जा रहा था कि वो औरत उस झुग्गी में से निकली और ऐसे झपट कर उस आदमी की बाँह पकड़ कर हिलाई कि वो हक्का-बक्का रह गया। दुबला-पतला तो था ही, ऐसे झूल गया जैसे आँधी आई हो।’
मैं साँस रोक कर सुनने लगी। ‘क्यों? उस औरत ने उसे क्यों झकझोरा?’
‘मुझे क्या पता? दोनों एक दूसरे को जम कर गालियाँ दे रहे थे, झुग्गी झोंपड़ियों में रहते हैं, शराब-अराब पी कर पड़े होंगे। बिल्लियों की लड़ाई से नशा खराब हुआ होगा।’
‘उस आदमी ने क्या किया फिर?’ मैंने अधीरता से पूछा।
मेरे पति ने मुझ पर एक नज़र डाली। ‘वो दबंग औरत है। आदमी क्या करता? वहीँ गली में बैठ गया और वो औरत झुग्गी में से प्लास्टिक का थैला निकाल लाई, शायद कपडे थे उसमें और उस आदमी को दे मारा। वो आदमी चिल्ला रहा था – तूने मेरी ज़िंदगी ख़राब कर दी और भी न जाने क्या अनाप-शनाप और औरत गालियां दे रही थी। मेरे पति ने मुँह बिगाड़ा , ‘इलिट्रेट लोग हैं, इस झोंपड़पट्टी के कारण इस इलाक़े की प्रॉपर्टी वैल्यू पर असर पड़ रहा है।’
मेरा दिल तेज़ी से धड़क रहा था। ‘फिर? फिर क्या हुआ?’
मेरे पति ने इस बार मुझे भौंहें उचका कर देखा। ‘फिर क्या? घटिया लोगों की लड़ाई देखने-सुनने थोड़े ही खड़ा रहता? मैंने खिड़की बंद की और आ कर सो गया।‘ वह उठ पड़ा, ‘नहा लेता हूँ।‘
मैं वहीँ बैठ कर सुबह की धूप से चमकती खिड़की को देखती रही।
आते मानसून की साँझ है। पुरवा बादलों को यहाँ वहाँ धकेल रही है, पीपल की पत्तियाँ और डालें काँपती सी नाच रही हैं। आकाश में रौशनी लहरों सी उठ-गिर रही है, शुरूआती सावन की मोतिया झाईं वाली रोशनी लेकिन पीछे वाली गली में रात की सलेटी छायाएँ घिर आई हैं।
गोधूलि गहराने लगी तो मैंने खिड़की बंद करने के लिए बाँह बढ़ाई। तभी वही दुबला-पतला जवान गली में घुसा। उसके एक हाथ में गत्ते का छोटा सा डिब्बा था, वैसा ही जिसमें हलवाई पाव भर मिठाई देते हैं और दूसरे में वह पत्तों में बँधा कुछ बड़ी नरमी से थामे था। फूल होंगे, ट्रेफ़िक सिग्नल पर और मंदिरों के पास बच्चे ऐसे ही पत्तों में लपेट कर गजरे बेचते हैं। वह उतावली से बढ़ता आया और झुग्गी के सामने रुक गया। झुग्गी का दरवाज़ा बंद था। कुछ झिझकते हुए उसने टीन पत्तर से बना दरवाज़ा खटखटाया और अपने हाथ में थमे सामान पर नज़र गाड़े इंतज़ार करने लगा। मेरे कण्ठ में कुछ भर आया। मैंने धीरे से खिड़की बंद कर दी और भीतर चली गई।
