अनुकृति उपाध्याय समकालीन हिंदी कहानी में अपने अलग मिज़ाज, कहन की विशिष्ट शैली के कारण जानी जाती हैं। उनके पहले कहानी संग्रह ‘जापानी सराय’ को पाठकों-आलोचकों का ध्यान खींचा था। अंग्रेज़ी में तीन उपन्यास लिख चुकी इस लेखिका का पहला हिंदी उपन्यास जल्दी ही आने वाला है। आप यह कहानी पढ़िए-

क़तार में हर कोई अलग-थलग खड़ा था। मास्क की म्यानों में कसे मुँह मोड़े सभी यात्री, बच्चे, बक्से और थकान सहारते प्रतीक्षारत थे। सभी आँखें उस बूढ़े द्वारपाल पर टिकी थीं जो ऑटोमैटिक द्वार और लोगों की क़तार के बीच डगमग डगमग डोल रहा था। लोग यात्रा के खेद से मुड़े-तुड़े अंगों को खींच-तान कर बल निकालने लगे, व्हीलचेयर में धैर्यवत बैठी क्लांत वृद्धा का सिर छाती पर झुक गया और माँ की बाँहों में कसी एक बच्ची रो उठी। बच्ची बिलख-बिलख कर रोती अपनी नन्हीं देह झटकार रही थी। आख़िर माँ की थकी गोद से फिसल कर वह द्वार की और दौड़ पड़ी।
कई जोड़ी आँखें उस नन्हीं भगोड़ी की ओर उठीं। वह अपनी छोटी-छोटी टाँगें पटकती दौड़ी ही जा रही थी। किसी ने भी बढ़ कर उसे बहलाय-पुचकारा नहीं, न पंक्ति से निकल कर कोई उसकी ओर बढ़ा ही और न ही किसी ने पलट कर उसकी थकी-घबराई माँ को दो शब्द ही कहे। सभी क़तार से बँधे खड़े रहे कि क़तार छोड़ देने पर जाने क्या हो, फिर जगह मिले, न मिले? आख़िर क़तार की रखवाली करती, चुस्त वर्दी पहने एक युवती ने झपट कर बच्ची की गुदगुदी बाँह पकड़ ली। उसने अनमुस्काती आँखों माँ को देखा और बच्ची उसे सुपुर्द कर दी। क़तार निश्चल रही, और बच्ची के रोने के अलावा, मौन और भावहीन। केवल एक पुराना-धुराना बक्सा सँभाले खड़ा कलाकार ही कुछ बुदबुदाता रहा।
‘ओ नन्हीं, ओ मुन्नी, मत रो, मत रो,
देख तो,
आई तितली,
रंग-बिरंगी, तुझ सी तितली,
ओ चिड़िया, ओ गुड़िया
ओ मिसरी, ओ मिठिया…’
उसकी नर्म, फुसफुसाती बुदबुदाहट उसके मास्क में खो गई। वह ख़ुद भी निश्चय नहीं कर पाया कि वह सचमुच बोल रहा था या सिर्फ़ सोच भर रहा था।
लेकिन उसकी फुसफुसाहट क़तार में बहुत पीछे, अपनी माँ की थकी बाँहों में कुरलाती बच्ची तक पहुँच गई। वह चुपा गई और भीगी विस्फारित आँखों तितलियों के झुण्ड को देखने लगीं, तरह-तरह की तितलियाँ – सफ़ेद और पीली और रंग-बिरंगी बुंदकियों वाली – जो जाने कहाँ से अचानक नमूदार हुई थीं और अब उसके इर्द-गिर्द नाच रहीं थीं। बच्ची अपना फूल-सरीखा हाथ हिला-हिला कर तितलियों को बुलाने लगी। हर बार जब वह किलकती और तितलियों को पुकारती तो और-और तितलियाँ आ जुटतीं। यहाँ तक कि उसके ऊपर तितलियों का रंगीन चँदोवा-सा तन गया और पंखों की रंगीन झाईं से उसकी माँ का रुँआसा चेहरा खिला और तरोताज़ा नज़र आने लगा।
क़तार में खड़े थके-माँदों ने भी वे तितलियाँ देखीं और उनके पंखों की हल्की-हल्की हवा अपने चेहरे पर महसूस की। व्हीलचेयर में बैठी बूढ़ी औरत ने अपना सिर उठाया। उसकी आँखें मुस्कान से चमकने लगीं। कलाकार बुदबुदाता रहा। उसने अपना बक्सा हाथों में कस कर थाम लिया। उसका ह्रदय किसी नम, गर्म और भीनी तासीर से पसीज उठा। इसे ही शायद आशा कहते हैं, उसने सोचा, या प्यार। उसकी बुदबुदाहट गुनगुनाहट में बदल गई – तितलियाँ, तितलियाँ, छू गईं तितलियाँ, सपनों के पंखों से, सपनों-से पंखों से…’ बिजली-बत्तियों की पीली रौशनी में मुरझाए ख़ाकी, ख़ामोश प्रतीक्षागृह में धीरे-धीरे इंद्रधनुष उग आए। क़तार की रखवाली करते युवक युवतियाँ, अपने हाथों में थमी फेहरिस्तों को निपटा कर दूसरी क़तारें सँभालनी हैं। वे भूल गए कि वे जवान होते किशोर-किशोरियाँ हैं जो कल तक एक-दूसरे को तिरछी आँखों ताकते, नटखटपन से खिलखिलाते थे। बूढ़े द्वारपाल ने आँखें सिकोड़ कर कतरनों सी डोलती तितलियों को देखा और बाँहें लहरा कर उन्हें छितराता, क़तार के लोगों को बाहर आ लगी बस की ओर ले चला।
होटल में असंख्य कमरे थे जिनमें असंख्य लोग रह सकते थे। कलाकार को ऊँची मंज़िल पर एक कोने में, एक छोटा सा कमरा दिया गया। कमरे का दरवाज़ा कस कर मूँद दिया गया। भीतर आने वालों को बाहर जाने और बाहर वालों को भीतर आने की इजाज़त नहीं थी ।
कलाकार ने अपना बक्सा कमरे के बीचोंबीच रखा और चारों ओर देखने लगा। कमरे की एक दीवार काँच की थी, एकदम पारदर्शी। बाहर लोग, वाहन, पेड़ और आवाज़ें थीं और आकाश में बुझे-बुझे बादल। भीतर सलेटी सन्नाटा था। कलाकार के लिए सभी स्वर और गतियाँ निषिद्ध थीं। वह झूमते पेड़ों में हवा का अनुमान कर सकता था और चमकते फुटपाथ में बारिश का लेकिन उनके स्पर्श से वंचित था। गाढ़ी निःशब्दता को चीर कर उसने अपना घिसा-पुराना बक्सा खोला। बक्से के भीतर एक और बक्सा था, हरे, आबदार पानी जैसे सुलेमानी पत्थर का। उसके कल-कब्ज़े चाँदी के थे और ताला सोने का। कलाकार ने बक्सा खोल कर एक बाँसुरी निकाली, मामूली बाँसुरी, पुराने बाँस की, जिस पर कलाकार के होंठों की छाप और अँगुलियों की चाप अंकित हो गई थी, और धीरे -धीरे उसमें अपनी साँसें फूँकने लगा।
होटल में साफ़-सफ़ाई करने वाली एक औरत कुछ कमरे साफ़ कर गलियारे में खड़ी, बासी चादरों और गंदे तौलियों से भरी ट्रॉली के सहारे सुस्ता रही थी कि उसे कुछ विचित्र सा महसूस हुआ। उसे लगा कि वह बोर्नेओ के वर्षा-वनों के मुहाने पर बसे अपने छोटे क़स्बे में लौट गई है। उसके सामने घुमेर ले बहती किनाबातांगान नदी थी और उस में प्रतिबिम्बित प्राचीन हरे वन थे। एक महार्घ पीत मेरांती वृक्ष से विशाल धनेश पक्षियों की टोली उड़ी। उनके इंद्रधनुषी पंखों से आकाश रंग गया। एक ओरांगुटान माता ने अपने नन्हें, कत्थई-नारंगी बालदार खाल वाले बच्चे को अपनी बेढब लम्बी बाँहों में समेट लिया। दो खिलंदड़े पिग्मी हाथी एक दूसरे पर मिट्टी और सूखी पत्तियाँ डाल कर खेलते प्रगट हुए। नदी के मोड़ पर चरते सारस ने अपने संगी को पुकारा। चारों ओर अनाम फूल झरने लगे और आकाश पिता की आँख-सरीखा हो गया। औरत ने अपनी देह में सुदूर सुला-सागर की नमकीन हवा की स्वतंत्रता महसूस की। तभी उसकी कमर में बँधा टाइमर बज उठा। ट्रॉली में भरे कपड़े लांड्री में काम करने वाली सहायिका तक पहुँचाने का समय हो गया था। उसने एक गहरी साँस ली और ट्रॉली धकेलने लगी। जैसे-जैसे वह आगे बढ़ने लगी, उसके केशों में उलझे बाँसुरी के स्वर बूँद -बूँद उसकी नाड़ियों में रिसने लगे । वे स्वर उसके रक्त में घुल कर उसके भीतर गुह्य, गहरी जगहों में उतर गए और बजते ही रहे।
लॉन्ड्री में काम करने वाली औरत ट्रॉली में से मैले कपड़ों के बोझ उतार रही थी। सारा जीवन उसने इस शहर में ट्रेन और बसों में सवारी करते और फुटपाथों पर चलते बिताया था। वह सुपर मार्केट से घर का सारा सामान ठीक छः मिनट में खऱीद लेती थी और एक ट्रॉली ठीक पाँच मिनट और पच्चीस सेकेण्ड में ख़ाली करती थी। सफ़ाई करने वाली औरत की ट्रॉली धातुई रेलों पर सरकती आई और अपने खाँचे में अटक गई। लांड्री में काम करने वाली औरत ने उसमें भरे कपड़ों को फ़ुर्ती से निकाला और कपडे धोने की मशीन के मुँह में झोंकने के लिए मुड़ी। तभी उसको कुछ विचित्र सा अनुभव हुआ। उसकी बाँहों में थमी चादरों से थके दिनों और असंतुष्ट रातों की बास नहीं आ रही थी, न वे मैली-गन्दी ही थीं। बल्कि वे एकदम साफ़-शफ़्फ़ाफ़, बेदाग़ और इस्त्री की सौंधी गर्माहट से भरी थीं। दूसरी चादरों की तरह वे मशीनों से काते-बिने सूत की सपाट सफ़ेदी वाली और भारी-भरकम नहीं थीं, वे हाथ-कते रेशम सी मुलायम थीं और उनका रंग पुराने हाथीदाँत जैसा मीठा था। उनके कोर झिलमिलाते इंद्रधनुषी रंगों में रँगे थे। चादरों से ऐसी मोहक सुगंधि उठ रही थी कि लांड्री में काम करने वाली औरत अपने पांच मिनट पच्चीस सेकेण्ड वाले रेकॉर्ड को बिल्कुल भूल गई। उसने उन सुगन्धित चादरों को अपनी बाँहों में कस लिया और अपना चेहरा उनमें छुपा लिया।
वह बहुत देर तक चादरों में मुँह गड़ाए उस सुगंध में डूब रही। वह सुगंध उसके भीतर उतर गई, उसके शरीर की हर कोशिका में धँस गई। उसे लगा कि वह स्वयं ही उस सुगंध की बनी है। सुगंध में बसी प्रत्येक साँस के साथ वह हर परिचित-अपरिचित गंध भूलने लगी, भीगे फुटपाथों और सीले कपड़ों, साबुन और कलफ़ की गंधें उसकी स्मृति से हमेशा के लिए मिट गईं। सम्मोहन की सी दशा में उसने चादरें उठा कर आलमारी में रख दीं और भारी पगों दूसरी ट्रॉली की ओर मुड़ गई। हालंकि वह बहुत देर तक सुगंध के सम्मोहन में खोई रही थी लेकिन जब उसने अपनी कलाई घड़ी पर दृष्टि डाली तो अचंभित रह गई – उसे ट्रॉली ख़ाली करने में ठीक पाँच मिनट और पच्चीस सेकेण्ड लगे थे।
चादरों से उड़ती सुगंध आलमारी से निकल कर लांड्री और फिर तहख़ाने, बावर्चीखानों, भोजनागारों और सभागृहों, स्वागत कक्षों और मनोरंजनगृहों, होटल के अनगिनत कमरों और अनंत गलियारों में बस गई। होटल की इमारत में लगे तांत, सूत, लकड़ी, पत्थर, ईंट, गारा, चूना, काँच, यहाँ तक कि लेई, गोंद और रसायन, जिनके नाम सिर्फ़ इमारत बनाने वाले इंजीनियर और नक़्शे पर चर्चा के समय कमरे के एक कोने में खेलने वाले वास्तुकार के बेटे को ही याद थे, उस सुगंध से तर हो गए। उस शाम जो भी उस होटल में आया, उस सुगंध की तरंगों में डूबता-उतराता रहा और जीवन भर के लिए उस सुंगंध की स्मृति उसके अँगुलियों के पोरुओं में अटकी रही। होटल के बाहर से गुज़रने वालों ने भी क्षण भर रुक कर गहरी साँसों में सुगंध घूँटी और कई ठिठुरती ऋतुओं वह उनकी छाती को लेप सा गर्माती रही।
कलाकार ने बाँसुरी हरे पानी के रंग वाले सुलेमानी पत्थर के बक्से में रख दी और उसकी चाँदी की साँकल में सोने का ताला जड़ दिया। वह बिस्तर पर लेट गया। उसकी मुँदी आँखों में सीपी से बादल उतर आए और वह चाँद की तरह धीरे-धीरे सो गया।
कलाकार सोता रहा और दुनिया में कुछ नहीं बदला। लोग बीमार पड़ते और मरते रहे। जीवन ने किसी को राहत नहीं दी और न मृत्यु ने मुक्ति। भूख की आग जलती रही और घृणा के क्षरण से सब जर्जर हो गए।
कलाकार सोता रहा, उस नींद में जो रचने की थकान जैसी मीठी थी और संतुष्टि-सी भंगुर। वह नींद बहुमूल्य थी क्योंकि उसके नर्म समाधानों के पीछे, एक झीने कुहरे में ढँके बेहद कँटीले प्रश्न थे जो किसी भी क्षण कलाकार को तार-तार कर सकते थे।
कलाकार सोता रहा लेकिन जब किसी कमरे में कोई बच्चा रोया तो उसका रोना कुश घास के तिनके सा कलाकार की नींद की काई में पैंठ गया और कलाकार ने सपने में अपनी बाँसुरी सँवारी।
बस, यही कहानी है, इतनी ही।
