काले बादलों से घिरी सुबह… ठंढ़ी हवा और दूर तक फैली घास…मोबाईल की घंटी बजी, किसी ने दो शब्द कहें और मन जैसे कहीं दूर खो गया…
ऊर्जा, उद्यमशीलता, गति और कर्म की प्रचंडता… अनवरुद्ध प्रवाह… हृदय में बजने वाला शाश्वत धुन, शाश्वत राग, लय…; लय यानी प्रकृति का अनुकूल स्वभाव… तारतम्यता…
तब ढ़लती शाम सुबह की कहानी लिख रही थी और आज सुबह ढ़ल चुकी रात की कहानी कह रही थी।
माथे की शिकन झुर्रियों को आकार दे संवार रही थी और सात तहखानों के भीतर दिल में बेचैनी का समंदर उमड़ा पड़ा था। तारे घर को चले जाते, सूरज आता, पंछी चीं करते, बादल टहलते, बारिश होती, घास कुलबुलाते, पेड़ हरे हो लेते, मिट्टी पानी पी लेती, समंदर उफ़ान मारता, पहाड़ दृश्य के साक्षी बनते लेकिन बावजूद इन सबके सन्नाटा हर तरफ़ पसर गया था – बाहर भी और मन के घरौंदे में भी। घड़ी की टिक-टिक अब उंगलियों पर गिनी जा रही थी। उनींदी रातें और ठहरा समय…। घाव की टीस अब चेहरे पर भी अपना असर छोड़ने लगी थी।
गोल्डी ने धीमे से पूछा – क्या हुआ?
लवलॉक ने उतनी ही तेजी से टालते हुए कहा – जाने दो। अपनी कहो…
गोल्डी जवाब से ज्यादा उसके त्वरित होने से हतप्रभ रह गया था। समझ आ गया कि थिरता भंग हो चुकी है। कहीं कुछ है जो बहुत गहरा है पर ठीक नहीं… लेकिन लवलॉक के साथ ? जेम्स लवलॉक के साथ… गोल्डी को जैसे विश्वास न हुआ।
गोल्डी ने दुबारा पूछा – हिस्लोप के साथ सब ठीक है ?
लवलॉक ने दुबारा उतनी ही तेजी में सिर हिलाया – हाँ।
और बच्चे?
थोड़ा झुँझलाते हुए – ऑल इज़ फाइन।
देन ?
लेकिन फिर वहीं जवाब।
गोल्डी को अच्छा न लगा, झिड़कते हुए कहा – देखो! मैं तुम्हारा पड़ोसी बाद में हूँ। पहले तुम्हारा दोस्त हूँ। अगर नहीं बताना चाहते तो कोई बात नहीं लेकिन फिर तुम्हें भी कोई हक नहीं कि तुम मुझसे ‘अपनी सुनाने’ का दावा पेश करो। वह टेबल पर रखी कॉफ़ी सुड़कने लगा। तमतमाया लेकिन नम चेहरा खिड़की से बाहर देखने लगा।
दोनों के बीच चुप्पी छा गई। केवल गोल्डी की कॉफ़ी बीच-बीच में सुड़ करती रही। लवलॉक की कॉफ़ी ठंढ़ी पड़कर बस टुकुर-टुकुर देख रही थी।
कुछ देर बाद लवलॉक ने चुप्पी तोड़ते हुए गहरी उसांस भरी और कमजोर आवाज़ में कहा – गोल्डी!… मैंने इतने वर्षों तक काम किया। चिकित्सा सिद्धांत में पीएचडी की। क्रायोप्रेज़र्वेशन पर काम किया। इलेक्ट्रॉन कैप्चर डिटेक्टर का आविष्कार किया। वायुमंडल में सीएफ़सी का पता लगाया। ओज़ोन लेयर को हो रहे नुकसान के बारे में पता किया, लेकिन गोल्डी!… आवाज़ जैसे टूट गई।
हाथ में जकड़े पत्थर को ढील देकर गोल- गोल घुमाते हुए लवलॉक ने गहरी सांस भरी। घूमते पत्थर पर लवलॉक अपनी आँखें गड़ाए बैठा रहा, फिर झटके से गर्दन ऊपर उठायी और हदबदायी आवाज़ में दुबारा कहना शुरु किया – आज मैं नासा के लिए काम करता हूँ…इतना कहना था कि भरभराकर आवाज़ फिर टूट गई। बेबस आँखें गोल्डी को देखने लगी।
गोल्डी ने गला साफ़ करते हुए कहा – हाँ तो ? तुम्हें गर्व होना चाहिए । तुम पहले व्यक्ति हो जिसने न केवल इन सबकी खोज की है बल्कि अपने अनुसंधान को जी रहे हो और क्या चाहिए तुम्हें ?
लवलॉक की आँखें सिकुड़ गईं। आँखों के नीचे उग आए काले घेरे और काले लगने लगें, झुर्रियां थोड़ी और गाढ़ी होती चली गई। लवलॉक की आँखें फिर से पत्थर को घूरने लगी। बहुत देर तक दोनों के बीच सन्नाटा पसरा रहा।
गोल्डी तुम्हें नासा का वह प्रोजेक्ट याद है जिसमें मैं मंगल ग्रह के लिए काम कर रहा था…
हाँ! तुम तो उसमें बहुत सफल भी रहे हो।
हाँ – लवलॉक की आँखें डूबने-उतराने लगीं । जानते हो… उस रिसर्च ने मुझे बहुत नाम दिया, इज्ज़त दी, एक मकाम हासिल किया है मैंने उस खोज से… लेकिन गोल्डी यह कोई नहीं जानता कि उस रिसर्च के बाद से मैं खुद में ही उलझ कर रह गया हूँ।
गोल्डी चौंक गया… क्यों ? क्या हुआ ?
बता रहा हूँ … कहते हुए लवलॉक ने हथेलियों के बीच अटके पत्थर को टेबल पर रख दिया और ठंढ़ी पड़ चुकी कॉफ़ी को एक ही बार में सुड़क लिया… सुनो… मंगल का जब अध्ययन कर रहा था तब एक बात जो गौर करने वाली थी वह यह कि मंगल और पृथ्वी दोनों की रासायनिक स्थितियों में कोई भी अंतर नहीं…
तो ? यहीं तो तुमने जाना है…
हाँ लेकिन जो नहीं जानता हूँ वो यह कि मंगल और पृथ्वी दोनों की जब सारी रासायनिक स्थितियाँ लगभग एक- सी हैं तो फिर क्या कारण है कि पृथ्वी पर जीवन है, पृथ्वी पर हरियाली है, पेड़-पौधे हैं, जीव-जन्तु हैं, मैं हूँ, तुम हो और मंगल पर कुछ भी नहीं। पृथ्वी खुशहाल है और मंगल उजाड़…हम हंस-बोल रहे हैं और मंगल पर वीरानगी पसरी हुई है…।
हम्म…
गहराती हुई शाम रात बनती जा रही थी। ठंढ़ खिड़की से अंदर पाँव पसारने लगी थी। लवलॉक उठकर खिड़की बंद करने लगा।
गोल्डी चुप बना बंद होती खिड़कियों को घूरता रहा। खिड़कियों को बंद कर लवलॉक सोफ़े पर लेट गया। उसकी गर्दन सोफ़े से नीचे झूल रही थी और पैर ऊपर दीवाल पर टीके हुए थे। अंगूठा बार-बार दीवाल की पपड़ियों को खुरचने लगता फिर रुक जाता।
अचानक गोल्डी ने पूछा- हिसलॉप कहाँ है ?
वो और बच्चे सभी छुट्टियाँ मनाने हवाई गए हैं… क्यों क्या हुआ?
कुछ नहीं… आज रात मैं यहाँ रुकना चाहता हूँ।
बीयर खत्म हो गयी है और मैं अभी कहीं नहीं जाना चाहता। किचेन में भुना चिकेन और उबले अंडे पड़े हैं, यदि खाना चाहो हो तो खा सकते हो…
शटअप… मैं यहाँ बस तुम्हारे लिए रुकना चाहता हूँ।
लवलॉक छत देखता रहा।
तुमने कभी ग्रीक माइथोलॉजी पढ़ी है ?
हाँ थोड़ी बहुत…
अच्छा छोड़ो… पहले यह बताओ कि तुम्हें हटन याद है ?
क्या बकवास कर रहे हो ? जेम्स हटन भी कहीं याद करने वाली चीज़ है ? भूगर्भशास्त्र का जनक वहीं न ?
हाँ वहीं …
एक मिनट… तुम कहना क्या चाह रहे हो ? concept of ‘geophysiology’ ― a common approach to unite scientists in the common course of rational environmentalism (‘uniformitarianism’) as holistic science…” मतलब जेम्स हटन मतलब… ?
मतलब अब तुम पहले ग्रीक माइथोलॉजी को जानो। लवलॉक ! तुम्हारे इन चक्कर काटने वाले ख्यालों का जवाब उन पौराणिक कहानियों में ही है। ये दुनिया, ये पृथ्वी अकेली सांस नहीं लेती है बल्कि ये धरती, आकाश, पहाड़, नदी-नद, नाले, समंदर, जंगल, बर्फ़, मैदान, हवा, परिंदे और ये सारी प्रजातियाँ हम- तुम सभी आपस में जुड़े हैं। इसमें किसी एक के भी खत्म हो जाने पर दूसरे का असितत्व नहीं है।
तुम कहना क्या चाहते हो गोल्डी ? मुझे कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा… ।
सुनो… लवलॉक… क्या तुम आर्टिमिस को जानते हो ?… कहते हुए गोल्डी अपनी जगह छोड़कर उठ खड़ा हुआ। मद्धिम पीली में रौशनी के बीच कमरे में धीमे- धीमे टहलने लगा था। उसे पता था कि लवलॉक के पास कोई जवाब नहीं होगा और वह उसकी पीठ को घूर रहा होगा। डीम पीली बत्ती कमरे में लैम्प जैसा प्रकाश बना रही थी, सो गोल्डी दीवाल पर पड़ने वाली अपनी परछाईं देखने लगा, थोड़ी देर तक देखता रहा… फिर पीठ पर गड़ती आँखों को महसूस कर कहना शुरू किया – आर्टिमिस ग्रीक धर्म/ मिथक की एक खूबसूरत देवी है। हाँ, वो एफ़्रोडाइट नहीं है लेकिन उससे कम भी नहीं। आर्टिमिस जंगली जानवरों की देवी है। शिकार, प्रजनन, पेड़- पौधों का उगना, बच्चे का जन्म ये सब आर्टिमिस के कारण ही संभव है… पारदर्शी भावों वाले ग्रामीणों को आर्टिमिस बेहद प्रिय है। रोमनों के बीच ‘डायना’ भी बहुत हद तक इसी तरह की है…
परछाईं पर गड़ी आँखों को हटाकर वह अब लवलॉक की तरफ़ मुड़ गया… लवलॉक अब तक उठकर बैठ गया था। उसकी आँखें मूँदी हुईं थीं जैसे योग साध रहा हो..गोल्डी फिर टहलने लगा… .
आर्टिमिस आमतौर पर निम्फ के साथ आनंद मनाना पसंद करती है और निम्फ उपजाऊपन से संबंधित है। उसे पहाड़ों, जंगलों, नदियों, दलदल के बीच रहना पसंद है। आर्टिमिस ज़ीऊस और लिटो की बेटी है और अपोलो की जुड़वा बहन। अपोलो को तुम जानते ही होगे… है न ?
लवलॉक आँख मुँदे हुए ही बोल पड़ा – हाँ! सूर्य, प्रकाश, संगीत, कविता, कला, नृत्य, तीरंदाजी, चिकित्सा का देवता। ग्रीक सौंदर्य का प्रतिमान, युवाओं का आदर्श… क्या हीं सुंदर मूर्तियाँ बनाई गईं हैं… उसकी आवाज़ बहुत दूर से आती जान पड़ रही थी।
ठहरो लवलॉक ! तुम सही कह रहे हो लेकिन अभी उधर न जाओ… ध्यान से सुनो…
अपोलो और आर्टिमिस ये दोनों जिस लिटो के बच्चे हैं, वह एक टाइटन** कोएस और फ़ोबे की बेटी है और ये टाइटन यूरेनस (The Sky) और गैया (The Earth) के बच्चे हैं और ये गैया (Gaia) ही तुम्हारी समस्याओं का समाधान है लवलॉक!
लवलॉक की आँखें मूँदी ही रही। बंद आँखों में वह न जाने क्या सोच रहा था। गोल्डी अब चुप होकर लवलॉक को देखने लगा। उसका खोया- खोया चेहरा बर्फ़ से घिरी किसी मूर्ति की तरह बिलकुल ठोस लग रहा था।
कमरे में सन्नाटा भायं-भायं करता हुआ छा गया। घड़ी टिक- टिक करती रही- ऐसा लगता किसी के ध्यान न दिए जाने का शोक मना रही हो। बंद खिड़कियों से दूर हूहूआती बर्फ़ीली हवा की आवाज़ आ-जा रही थी… लगता जैसे छुआ-छुई खेल रही हो और भागती हुई कभी खिड़की से आकर धम्म से टकरा जाती और फिर सब शांत हो जाता… बस साँसों की आवाज़ हुंकारी दे रही थी।
लवलॉक को देखते- देखते गोल्डी अचानक उठकर किचेन की तरफ़ चला गया। लवलॉक वैसे ही स्थिर बना हुआ था। थोड़ी देर बाद उसके शरीर में कंपन शुरू हुआ। आँखें खुली, हल्की फुसफुसाहट भरी आवाज़…फिर गले की घरघराहट को साफ कर धीमे से बोला – गैया (Gaia)… उसकी आँखें सामने देख कर भी सामने नहीं देख रही थी। कहीं शून्य में खोई हुई थी। हाथ-पैर काँप रहे थें और वह धीमे-धीमे एक धुन की तरह ‘गैया’ रट रहा था। इतने में डगडगाती कॉफ़ी मग, उबले अंडों और बचे-खुचे भूने चिकेन के साथ गोल्डी कमरे में दाखिल हुआ। लवलॉक उसे देखते ही उछलकर चिल्ला पड़ा… गोल्डी… ई…ईईई…ई…ई… खुद को बचाते हुए गोल्डी दीवाल की तरफ़ सरक गया और छलक रही कॉफ़ी पर आँखें गड़ाए ट्रे को जल्दी से संभालते हुए दीवाल से लगी टेबल पर रख दिया। फिर गहरी सांस लेकर उछलते लवलॉक से लिपट गया। लवलॉक की आँखों से आँसू झरने लगे थे और उसके काँपते हाथ बुरी तरह गोल्डी को सीने से भींचे हुए थे।
उसे पता चल चुका था – ये गैया और कोई नहीं पृथ्वी की इटरनल स्पिरिट् है, उसकी आंतरिक शक्ति है जिसे अलग-अलग धर्मों में देवी कहकर या किसी खास नाम से पुकारा गया है। वह स्वयं जीवंत शक्ति है जो इस पृथ्वी की प्रत्येक गतिविधि को संचालित और नियंत्रित करती है। मंगल में यहीं शक्ति नहीं है और पृथ्वी की यहीं शक्ति उसे जीवन प्रदान करती है।
लवलॉक को पता चल गया था ‘‘The Earth as the Self-Regulating Living Organism: Life regulates life on Earth”
जेम्स हटन की अगली कड़ी जुड़ चुकी थी।
दरअसल, ये दोनों और कोई नहीं बल्कि जेम्स लवलॉक – नासा के वैज्ञानिक और जॉन गोल्डी (पड़ोसी) स्कॉटलैंड के दार्शनिक साहित्यकार, नोबेल विजेता थें। 4 वर्ष की उम्र में लवलॉक के पिता ने उन्हें क्रिसमस पर बेल, लाइट्स से भरा हुआ एक बॉक्स गिफ़्ट किया था और एक छोटा बच्चा विज्ञान की तरफ़ आकर्षित हो गया। वर्ष 1970 में गोल्डी जो कि एक साहित्यकार थें, उनके सुझाए रास्ते से जेम्स को प्रेरणा मिली और उन्होंने विज्ञान को ग्रीक सिद्धांत (7वीं शताब्दी) से जोड़ते हुए ‘गैया’ सिद्धांत को प्रतिपादित किया। पूरी दुनिया में उनकी शोहरत जो पहले उनकी कदम चूमती थी अब उनके कदमों पर लोटने लगी थी।
उनके इस सिद्धांत को ‘अथर्ववेद’ के ग्यारहवें मण्डल के ‘पृथ्वी सूक्त’ (11 वीं शताब्दी ईसा. पूर्व.) से जोड़ते हुए भारत में पहली बार प्रो. राणा पी.बी.सिंह ने परिचित कराया। इस तरह नासा के वैज्ञानिकों की इस खोज में सैद्धांतिक रूप से भारतीय पक्ष भी जुड़ा।
अभी हाल ही में 26 जुलाई 2022 को उनके जन्मदिन (26 जुलाई 1919) के दिन ही रात्रि 9:55 पर 103 वर्ष की आयु में उनकी मृत्यु हुई है।
इस महान व्यक्तित्व को साहित्यिक लेखन की तरफ़ से श्रद्धांजलि तो बनती है।
