आज पढ़िए युवा लेखिका अणुशक्ति सिंह की एक संवेदनशील कहानी। यह कहानी ‘परिंदे’ नामक पत्रिका में प्रकाशित हुई है। आप लोगों के लिए यहाँ दी जा रही है-

बस की खिड़की से बाहर देखना उसे अच्छा लगता था। कंडक्टर ने कई बार बस की खिड़की बंद करने की ताक़ीद कर दी थी। इस बार जब वह स्वयं खिड़की के काँचों को सरकाने आया तो उसने ज़ोर से कंडक्टर को घूर दिया था। बिचारा सहम कर दूर हट गया और वह बाहर देखती रही। तब तक, जब तक धूल वाली हवा के थपेड़े उसकी आँखों और चेहरे के साथ पूरी तरह बेरहम नहीं हो गये… धूल का एक कण बाईं आँख में पैबस्त हुआ शायद। उसने सिटपिटा कर दुपट्टा आँखों से लगा लिया। कंडक्टर को कनखियों से देखते हुए हौले से खिड़की का काँच सरकाने लगी… उस सीमा तक जहाँ धूल आने की तमाम सम्भावनाएँ धूसरित होती हैं।
उसकी कनखियाँ अब भी कंडक्टर की नज़रों का जायज़ा ले रही थीं। मुँह पर टोपी रख सीट पर सर टिकाये कंडक्टर तनिक बेफ़्रिकी में था। अगले स्टॉप में आधा घंटा है…
उसकी उँगलियों ने दुपट्टे के एक कोने को गुम्मड़ सरीख़ा गोल करना शुरू कर दिया था। ऊँह! गुम्मड़ चोट की सूजन को कहते हैं। उसने ख़ुद को इस शब्द के बेजा इस्तेमाल पर झिड़का था। फिर इसे क्या कहेंगे? यह जो गोल-गोल लपेटा है उसने कपड़ों को… सूती कपड़े को गोल लपेटकर मुँह की भाप से गर्म कर आँखों की किरकिरी निकालने का यह नुस्ख़ा उसके बचपन जितना पुराना है। या सम्भवतः उसकी माँ के बचपन जितना… या उससे भी अधिक पुराना।
छुटपन में वह जब भी आँखों में कुछ पड़ने पर एक हाथ से आँख ढाँपे माँ के पास पहुँचती, माँ यूँ ही अपनी सूती साड़ी के आँचल को गोल कर मुँह से भापकर आँखों में लगा देती। किरकिरी निकल जाती। उसे माँ की साड़ी के आँचल याद हो आये। सुर्ख़ लाल, पीले, गुलाबी और कभी-कभी हरे… भाप लेते हुए किरकिरी आँखों से निकल गयी थी। आँखें फिर भी पनिया गई थीं।

आज आँखों ने पनियाये रहने का कॉंट्रैक्ट लिया है। उसने सोचा और ख़ुद ही इस बेतुकेपन पर मुस्कुरा उठी। सहसा अमन याद आया। उसकी भीगी आँखें आज ज़हन में बस गयी हैं। तक़रीबन दो साल बाद सब लौटे हैं। इत्तू सा था अमन पिछली बार जब उसे देखा था। अमन ही क्यों, सभी तो। मिट्ठी, अर्चित, निहा, विवान सब खिलौने से थे मार्च की उन तारीख़ों में स्कूल के बंद होने से पहले। लौटे तो अचानक ही कितने बड़े दिखने लगे हैं। ऑनलाइन में चेहरा रोज़ ही दिखता था। उनके क्लोज़ शॉट वीडियो को देखकर कभी अहसास ही नहीं हुआ कि महीनों के भीतर ये कंधे को छू लेने जितने लम्बे हो जाएँगे।

अमन की भीगी आँखों से वह जितना दूर भागना चाहती है, उनमें उतनी जज़्ब होती जा रही है। मिट्ठी की माँ की कॉल आई थी। किसी अमन नाम के बच्चे ने उसके हाथों पर दांत गड़ा दिए थे। मिट्ठी की माँ बेहद नाराज़ थी। ठीक भी था। वह भी मिट्ठी की माँ होती तो इतनी ही नाराज़ होती।
इतने ही नाराज़ अर्चित के पापा भी थे। अमन ने अर्चित को दो दिन पहले धक्का दे दिया था। अर्चित के पापा का ग़ुस्से से भरा वट्सएप मेसिज उसे याद है।
“व्हाट काइंड अव स्टूडेंट्स डू यू हैव? क्या सब सीख रहे हैं वे स्कूल में? इफ़ इट गेट्स रिपीटेड, मैं आपकी लापरवाही बर्दाश्त नहीं करूंगा। आय विल टेक इट टू अपर मैनेजमेंट”
“अपॉलोजीज़!”
मुआफ़ीनामा लिखते हुए वह अतीत और वर्तमान की कई परतों में झूल रही थी। ग़लती उसकी नहीं थी पर ज़मींदोज़ हो जाने वाले शर्म के बोझ से दबी जा रही थी। उसने अपनी शर्म के ऊपर सफ़ाई का ढ़ीला जामा पहनाते हुए अर्चित के पिता को वापस लिखा था,
“ऐसा फिर नहीं होगा। शायद स्पोर्ट्स क्लास के दौरान वे झगड़ पड़े। बट नो इक्स्क्यूज़, आय शैल बी मोर केयरफ़ुल। मैं और अधिक ध्यान रखूगी।”
जवाब भेजने के बाद उसने अर्चित के पापा के वट्सएप मेसिज को दुहराया।
“लर्निंग एट स्कूल…”
उसे फिर याद आया, वह इन बच्चों से ठीक दो साल बाद मिल रही है। दो साल बच्चे घर पर पढ़ते रहे, ऑनलाइन क्लासेज़ में। वह चाहती तो अर्चित के पापा को कह देती, डोंट पुट द ब्लेम ऑन मी। उसने नहीं कहा… वह अगर अर्चित का पापा होती तो यूँ ही परेशाँ होती।

उसकी टीचिंग काउन्सिल ने कहा था… नहीं, नहीं चेतावनी दी थी, “यह दूसरों के जूतों में पैर रखकर सोचना तुम्हारे प्रफ़ेशन के लिए ठीक है, पर यह आदत तुम्हें खा जाएगी। इट विल कंज़्यूम यू।”
उसने टीचिंग काउन्सिल की बात को बरौनियों से गिरे एक बाल को बंद मुट्ठी पर रख फूँकते हुए उड़ा दिया था।
“क्या विश माँगा?” मित्रवत् टीचिंग काउन्सिल ने स्नेह से पूछा था।
“… दूसरों के जूतों में पांव रखते हुए मेरे पैर सलामत रहें।” उसने आँख मारते हुए जवाब दिया था।

बहुत सोच-समझ कर इस ओर आई थी वह। मास्टरी सुकून की नौकरी होती है। छोटे बच्चों की मास्टरनी… उसे हमेशा मिली फ़िल्म की जया भादुरी बेहद अच्छी लगती रही है।
“मैंने कहा फ़ूलों से हँसो तो खिलखिला कर हँस पड़े…”
फूल, छोटे बच्चे, खिलखिलाते फूल। बेसाख्ता ही उसे कश्मीर का वह सुंदर बगीचा याद हो आया। कितने रंग के फूल से उस बगीचे में … खिलखिलाते फूल और खिलता बगीचा… पर वह नामी बगीचा अक्सर लोगों के लिए बंद हो जाता। शहर में डर फैलता, उस गार्डन के गेट पर ताला लगता और कुछ दिनों में फूलों की क्यारियां बेतरतीब हो जातीं। उनका खिलखिलाना बंद हो जाता…

“तुम नेट क्वॉलिफ़ायड हो। पीएचडी पूरी होने वाली है। हाई स्कोरर हो। हायर अकडेमिक्स में अच्छा फ़्यूचर हो सकता है तुम्हारा।”
इस बार उसे पैनल ने वार्न किया था। वह कुछ ऐसा चुनने जा रही थी जो उसकी योग्यता से मध्यम बैठता था।
“मुझे बच्चों का साथ अच्छा लगता है।”
इंटरव्यू पैनल को छोटा सा जवाब दिया था उसने।
4th बी की क्लास टीचर थी वह। दूसरी से पाँचवी तक के बच्चों को लैंग्विज पढ़ाना भी उसके ज़िम्मे था। कुछेक साल ही तो बीते थे इन बच्चों के साथ। एक दिन अचानक अनिश्चित काल के लिए ऑनलाइन पढ़ाने का फ़रमान आ गया।

स्कूल वाली क्लासेज़ बंद होने से पहले अमन शैतानी करता था क्या? अमन की भरी-भरी आँखें आज पीछा नहीं छोड़ने वाली हैं। वे यादों में भी अपनी जगह लेंगी।
उसे गुड्डे सरीखे एक नन्हे से बच्चे की याद हो आई, जो राइम्ज़ पढ़ते हुए अटक जाता था।
“नेक्स्ट टाइम फ़ोकस मोर अमन”
“यछ मै’म!”
यह ‘छ’ उसकी मुस्की उभार देता। छोटे बच्चों को पढ़ाने के सुख… उसकी तमन्नाओं के गागर में एक बूंद और गिरी थी ।

“यह बताओ अमन बहुत शरारतें करता था क्या?”
लंच ऑवर में उसने 2nd बी की क्लास टीचर से पूछा था।
“4 बी वाला अमन? आपकी क्लास वाला अमन निगम?”
“हाँ!”
“नहीं तो! कुछ ख़ास याद नहीं मुझे। थोड़ी-बहुत शरारत सारे ही बच्चे करते हैं।” 2nd बी की क्लासटीचर ने याद के सारे घोड़े दौड़ा लिए थे। कुछ ख़ास नहीं था उसके पास…
निष्कर्ष यह निकला था कि अमन उतना ही शांत और नटखट था, जितने बाक़ी बच्चे थे। फ़र्क़ यह था कि इन दिनों बाक़ी बच्चों की शिकायत हफ़्ते-महीने में कभी-कभार आती। अमन के नाम रोज़ शिकायती नोट आते। किसी की पेंसिल तोड़ देना, किसी को धक्का दे देना, दांत काट लेना।
मिट्ठी की मम्मी और अर्चित के पापा के शिकायती नोट के बाद उसने अमन को बुलाया था।
“आप मुझे मार लो मै’म। आय’म अ स्ट्रॉंग बॉय। मैं नहीं रोऊँगा।”
कुछ बहुत ज़ोर से चुभा था। अजीब से दर्द का अहसास हुआ था। मन के दर्द कई बार देह के दर्द पर भारी पड़ जाते हैं।

अमन उसके सामने खड़ा था। वह जानता था कि उसकी शिकायत आई है। क़ायदन उसे अमन के ढीठपने पर चिढ़ जाना चाहिए था। वह नहीं चिढ़ी। उसने अमन को गले से चिपका लिया। थोड़ी देर उसकी पीठ सहलाती रही। अहसास हुआ कि कंधे पर कुर्ता थोड़ा भींज गया है।
“अमन, तुम सचमुच स्ट्रॉंग बॉय हो। अब कोई बदमाशी मत करना।”
उसे डाँटना चाहिए था। अमन को रोना चाहिए था। उसने डाँटा नहीं। अमन रोया नहीं। जाते हुए बच्चे की पलकों पर कुछ गीला सा था।
—
“मै’म, अमन बेहद सेंसिटिव बच्चा है।”
“हूँ!” सामने बैठी स्त्री की आँखों में एक शून्य था।
“आपसे यह कहना था कि कुछ है जो ठीक नहीं है,
अमन का ध्यान थोड़ा अधिक रखने की ज़रूरत है।”
“रख तो रही हूँ मैं ध्यान! कितना ध्यान रखूँ? आप भी तो टीचर हैं उसकी, आप ही क्यों नहीं रख लेतीं ध्यान?”
यह उत्तर अप्रत्याशित था। सौम्य आवाज़ औचक ही तीखी हो जाए तो अधिक चुभती है…
उसने सामने बैठी स्त्री की आँखों के पार देखने की कोशिश की थी। वहाँ वैसी ही छलछलाहट थी जैसी अमन के आँखों में दिखी थी।
सामने वाली स्त्री अपनी ही प्रतिक्रिया पर खीझ गयी थी।
“माफ़ कीजिएगा! मेरा मतलब वह नहीं था…”
“नहीं! कोई बात नहीं!” वह विनम्र बने रहने का भरसक प्रयास कर रही थी।
“क्या अमन को हॉस्टल भेजना उचित रहेगा? “
“हॉस्टल क्यों, उसे तो अभी आपके पास रहने की ज़रूरत है।”
इतने छोटे बच्चे को हॉस्टल भेजने का ख़याल उसे कचोटने लगा।
“यहाँ इतने वायलेंस में …”
अमन की माँ बोलते-बोलते चुप हो गयी थी।

वा…य…लें…स … हिं… सा… व, य, ह, स, सभी हर्फ उसके दिमाग में गड्ड-मड्ड होने लगे थे। अक्षरों ने यादों के साथ कोई रेस लगा ली थी।

बीस-पच्चीस साल पहले की ही तो बात है। कितनी ताज़ा… कितनी साफ़…
“तुम्हें किसी बात का सऊर नहीं है।”
एक आदमी चिल्ला रहा था। चिल्लाते हुए आदमी का हाथ ज़ोर से घूमा था। एक औरत अपनी गाल पकड़े बैठ गयी थी।
कोने में एक छोटी बच्ची सहमी हुई खड़ी थी।
छोटी बच्ची जिसे नहीं मालूम था कि आदमी का हाथ क्यों घूमा था? औरत की क्या गलती थी… उसे ज़ोर की आवाज़ सुनाई दी थी। वह आवाज़ जिसे अक्सर वह नींद में सुनती और फिर अगली आवाज़ गाल पकड़ कर बैठने वाली औरत की सिसकियों की होती।
उस रात जब छोटी बच्ची सोई तो सपने में यही दृश्य फिर उभर आया। उसे आवाज़ और औरत की सिसकियों के बीच का भेद पता चल गया था। छोटी बच्ची सपने में ही डर गयी।
डर कर वह वाशरूम में छिप जाना चाहती थी। डर ने वाशरूम में भी पीछा ना छोड़ा। सूसू करना शायद उस डर को भगा देता।

सुबह नींद खुली तो वह औरत छोटी बच्ची को झकझोर रही थी। बिस्तर गीला था। छोटी बच्ची ने नींद में बिस्तर को ही वाशरूम समझ लिया था। औरत छोटी बच्ची को डाँट रही थी। औरत को गद्दे धूप में रखता देख आदमी औरत पर फिर चीख रहा था। छोटी बच्ची ख़ूब ज़ोर से चिल्लाना चाहती थी। बच्ची को आदमी से डर लगता था। वह चीख नहीं पायी। बच्ची औरत को लेकर कहीं दूर चली जाना चाहती थी। बच्ची दुनिया भर पर ग़ुस्सा होना चाहती थी।
उस दिन शाम में औरत को बच्ची की गुड़िया मिली। नहीं, गुड़िया के टुकड़े मिले। हाथ अलग, पैर अलग… औरत ने टुकड़े समेट कर डस्टबिन में डाल दिए। औरत ने बच्ची से गुड़िया के बारे में पूछा… बच्ची ने कंधे उचका दिए।
उस दिन के महीने भर बाद बच्ची को हॉस्टल भेज दिया गया। किताबों-कपड़ों के साथ बच्ची के एक आध खिलौने भी थे। उन खिलौनों में कोई गुड़िया नहीं थी। कई साल बीते। बच्ची कई साल तक नींद में बिस्तर गीला कर देती।
कई सालों तक सखियां इस बात पर उसे चिढ़ाती रहीं। बच्ची कई सालों तक मर्द के हाथ घूमने और औरत की सिसकियों की गूंज महसूस करती रही।
बहुत बाद में एक नमदिल वार्डन ने बड़ी होती लड़की के दिल पर नमक की स्नेहिल पोटली रखी थी। बिस्तर गीला करने की आदत तो छूट गयी थीं। कड़वी यादों के सिले ख़त्म नहीं हुए थे।

मै’म! मैं चलती हूँ।
छलकती आँखों को छिपाने को कोशिश करती हुई अमन की माँ जाने के लिए उठी थी।
हामी में सर हिलाते हुए उसने अगले स्टूडेंट को बुलाया था।
“मै’म … अमन को हॉस्टल भेजने के फ़ैसले पर एक बार सोचिएगा।”
अमन की माँ ने पलट कर देखा था। बाद उसके, बिना कुछ कहे निकल गयी थी।

अमन की शिकायतें नहीं आती थीं अब। निहा, अर्चित, विवान और मिट्ठी कोई अमन के बारे में कुछ नहीं कहता। सारे होमवर्क पूरे होते। साफ़-सुंदर लिखाई में मन लगाकर किया हुआ काम।
उस दिन गेम्स पिरीयड में कोने में खड़े, कहीं गुम अमन को देखकर उसका दिल भर आया। पुचकार कर पास बुलाया तो गले से लग गया।
“मै’म! आय’म अ गुड बॉय नाउ। यू नो दैट। मैम मम्मा से कहिए ना मैम। मुझे उनको छोड़कर नहीं जाना है …”

उसे दशकों पहले की वह रात फिर ज़िंदा हो गयी। औरत की सिसकियां फिर ताज़ा हो गयीं।
“मम्मा मुझे आपको छोड़कर कहीं नहीं जाना है।”
रोती आँखों वाली माँ भरे दिल से बच्ची को बोर्डिंग में छोड़ बाहर निकली थी। उस दिन बच्ची के अंदर बहुत कुछ दरक गया था। उस टूटन का असर यह हुआ कि उसे ‘रिश्ते’ जैसा हर शब्द अर्थहीन लगने लगा।
मन हुआ कि अमन की माँ को फ़ोन किया जाए। इस ख़याल के साथ ही बीते पीटीएम की याद तारी हो गयी।
कहीं उसकी बात अमन को माँ को बुरी लगी तो? उसने पिछली घटना से सबक़ लेने की कोशिश की थी।
वक़्त ख़ुद को टटोलने का था।
“कहीं वह अमन को लेकर ऑब्सेसिव तो नहीं हो रही?”
“कहीं वह अमन में किसी और को तो नहीं ढूँढ़ रही?”
इन दो सवालों के जवाब उसके पास भी नहीं थे।

गर्मी की छुट्टियों के दिन आने वाले थे। अमन से बिछड़ने का डर बढ़ता जा रहा था। बच्चों का स्कूल छोड़ना, नये बच्चों का आना, यह कोई नयी बात नहीं थी उसके लिए। उसने अब तक अनअटैच्ड रहना सीख था। इस बच्चे से क्यों जुड़ती जा रही है वह?

गर्मी की छुट्टियों के होमवर्क को दर्ज करने के लिए वह बच्चों की डायरी भर रही थी। एक बच्चे की डायरी पलटते हुए चिहुंक उठी। किसी गुमशुदा पन्ने के बीच टेढ़े आखरों में लिखा था,
“भगवान जी मम्मा को बचाइए न। पापा से पिटने से मम्मा को बचाइए न।”
भूत सद्यः सम्मुख था। नाम पलट कर देखा।
“अमन निगम
4 बी “

उस तारीख़ को रात नहीं बीत रही थी। ख़ूब रात जब कुत्ते भी सो गये थे, उसने अमन की माँ को ख़ूब लम्बा एक संदेश लिखा था। लिखते-लिखते उसकी आँख लगने लगी थी।
सपने में हॉस्टल की पहली छुट्टी के दिन थे। वह लौटी थी माँ के पास। माँ जिसकी सुर्ख़ लाल गुलाबी साड़ी सफ़ेद रंग से ढकी हुई थी। सुर्ख़ लाल गुलाबी साड़ी ने शायद उसे हॉस्टल भेजकर अपनी सारी दुनियावी ज़िम्मेदारी पूरी कर ली थी। उन पहली छुट्टियों के बाद वह कभी घर नहीं लौटी। छुट्टियों से ठीक पहले मौसी उसे अपने साथ ले जाती।

उस रात उसने मोबाइल के हिडन फ़ोल्डर में दो तस्वीर सेव की थी। एक माँ और उसकी, दूसरी तस्वीर में उसके साथ अमन था…
सोते वक़्त आँखें सामने की दीवार पर टिकी थी। माँ की माला टंगी तस्वीर में बार-बार मिसेज निगम नज़र आने लगती थीं।

उसने फोटो सेव करने के बाद मेसेज बॉक्स खोला। मिसेज निगम यानी अमन की माँ की प्रोफाइल पिक में अमन मुस्कुरा रहा था। मिनटों उस तस्वीर को घूरने के बाद अमन की माँ को एक संदेश लिखा था…
“किस-किस से भागेंगी मिसेज निगम? खुद से या अमन से? कब तक? हालात से कब भागेंगी?”
उसे लगा वह नींद में है। नींद में ही आँखें फिर दीवार पर टिकी थी। माँ की तस्वीर के छाए में अमन और उसी उम्र की एक बच्ची की तस्वीर एक होते जा रहे थे। एक लड़का- एक लड़की… दो अलग बच्चे जिनके होठों से गायब होती मुस्कुराहट के निशान जाने क्यों एकदम एक जैसे थे।
