वापसी
फरवरी २०१५ में दक्षिण कोरिया में हिन्दी अध्यापन का पहला साल ख़त्म होने को था. उससे पहले विभाग की ओर से पत्र मिला – आप एक साल और यहां पढाएं. प्रयास मुझे करना था – कॉलेज से पूछा – अनुमति नहीं मिली.
कह सकती हूं कि दोनों ही विदेश यात्राओं ने मुझे जीवन और हिन्दी भाषा के प्रति एक नई दृष्टि दी. हिंदी जगत से जुड़े अनगिनत देशी-विदेशी विद्वानों से मिलना हुआ, कुछ पक्के दोस्त बने. हंगरी की मारिया नेज्येशी, वियना में अलका आत्रेय, पोलैंड से मंदार पुरंदरे, कोरिया में प्रोफेसर पोढ़े और ह्रदय नारायण, प्रोफेसर किम और युवा किम का संग साथ अनूठा रहा .. राह दिखाना, राह सुझाना, जीवन जीने में मदद करना !
सिओल में दो सत्र पढ़ाकर स्वदेश लौटे, हिंदू कॉलेज के हिन्दी विभाग में वापसी हुई. इस बीच FYUP यानी चार वर्षीय बी.ए. पाठ्यक्रम आ चुका था. विभाग में डॉ रामेश्वर राय, अभय रंजन, हरीन्द्र, रचना, बिमलेंदु और पल्लव स्थायी रूप से थे ही, अरविन्द संबल जी नवल जी की सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद आ गए थे. नए पाठ्यक्रम के बढ़े हुए वर्क लोड के कारण विभाग में कई अतिथि अध्यापक भी शामिल हुए – उनमें कई हमारे विद्यार्थी थे.
हिंदू कॉलेज में अध्यापन के ये अंतिम पांच वर्ष थे, अंतिम पांच वर्ष… कहना बेकार है, क्योंकि मुझे तो अध्यापन का अंतिम दिन भी वैसा ही प्रफुल्लित मिला जैसे पहला दिन.
यह जरूर है कि इस बार वापसी पर मुझे हैरानी हुई जब कई सीनियर सहयोगियों ने आते ही मुझसे पूछा कि मैंने पढ़ाना किस वर्ष शुरू किया था ? वजह मालूम हुई कि वरिष्ठता क्रम में इस समय कॉलेज में मैं पहले स्थान पर हूं. आने के बाद कई बार ऑफिशियेटिंग प्रिंसिपल के रूप में काम करने का अवसर मिला.
उम्र में मुझसे बड़े, किंतु वरिष्ठता क्रम में बाद के, कई संगी-साथी इस बीच सेवानिवृत्त होने लगे.. .. इतिहास विभाग से डॉ तृप्ता वाही, डी एन गुप्ता जी और हमारे विभाग से डॉ हरीश नवल हंगरी प्रवास के दिनों में २०११-१२-१३ में सेवानिवृत्त हो चुके थे. डॉ सुचित्रा गुप्ता, डॉ निर्मल जैन, रामशरण जी, डॉ प्रबीर सिन्हा और डॉ सी के सेठ.. ये सब २०१४ से २०२० तक एक-दूसरे के आसपास सेवा निवृत्त हुए .
मेरे लिए २०१५ से २०२० तक का यह समय कॉलेज और विश्वविद्यालय के हिंदी विभाग की तमाम गतिविधियों में डूबे रहने का समय था. मन से सभी काम करने में खुशी मिलती. हमारे कॉलेज में बी.ए. प्रोग्राम एक नया विभाग दर्ज हुआ, रोटेशन से हिंदी विभाग को इसके प्रभारी का दायित्व मिला. विभाग प्रभारी होने के नाते, हिंदी विभाग के कामों के साथ-साथ यह जिम्मेवारी भी आई. कॉलेज में चुनावी गतिविधियों का दायित्व सौंपा गया, विभाग से पेपर सेटर-समन्वयक की जिम्मेदारी अधिकाधिक मिलती गई, कॉलेज की वार्षिक पत्रिका को अनवरत देखा. राष्ट्रीय सेवा योजना के कार्यक्रम अधिकारी के रूप में दो वर्ष काम करना बहुत अच्छा लगा.
जितनी संलग्नता बढ़ती जाती, कॉलेज से प्यार बढ़ता जाता.
हिंदू कॉलेज ने 1999 में अपना शताब्दी वर्ष मनाया था और अब 125 वें वर्ष की तैयारी है.
1999 में डॉ कविता शर्मा कॉलेज प्रिंसिपल थी, अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी जी मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में आमंत्रित थे.
कविता जी अंग्रेजी विभाग की वह प्राध्यापिका थी जो मेरे कॉलेज जॉएन करने के समय छुट्टी पर थी. बाद में उनके साथ बहुत सी गतिविधियों में शामिल रही. कविता जी ने हिंदू कॉलेज के इतिहास पर महत्वपूर्ण पुस्तक के अतिरिक्त उच्च शिक्षा और साहित्य पर कई आलेख लिखे. कॉलेज से जाने के बाद वे इंडिया इंटरनेशन सेंटर की डायरेक्टर बनी और दक्षिण एशियाई विश्वविद्यालय की प्रेसीडेंट भी रही. आज भी वे बहुत सक्रिय जीवन जीती हैं.
हिंदू कॉलेज के दो घनिष्ठ मित्रों की बात किए बिना बात कैसे बनेगी भला ? कॉलेज में हम तीन लेक्चरर एक ही वर्ष में आए. मैडम निर्मल जैन, विनय श्रीवास्तव और मैं.
निर्मल जैन सांख्यिकी विभाग में थी लेकिन उन्हें हिन्दी साहित्य से बहुत लगाव था. क्लास में जाने से पहले स्टाफ रूम की चाय पीते हुए हम अच्छे दोस्त हो गए. वे हिन्दी में हमेशा कुछ अच्छा पढ़ना चाहती थी .. कहानी, उपन्यास, आत्मकथा कुछ भी. कभी हम साथ-साथ लाइब्रेरी से किताबें ढूँढने जाते. कुछ समय बाद वे कॉलेज परिसर में ही रहने आ गई. लम्बे अरसे बाद हम पड़ोसी बन गए. दोस्ती प्रगाढ़ हुई, घर जैसा सम्बंध विकसित हुआ. मेरे गुरुवर अजित कुमार कहते थे कि कुछ सम्बन्ध हर बार नए सिरे से परिचय की मांग करते हैं – लेकिन कुछ एक सूत्र से सहज ही जुड़े रहते हैं. निर्मल जी के साथ सूत्र एक बार जुड़ा तो जुड़ा ही रहा .. हम जब भी मिलते, कोई भी बात कहीं से भी शुरू हो जाती और हमारी बातचीत चल निकलती. 1976 से आजतक हम ऐसे ही हैं, कोई भी बात, कभी भी, कहीं भी, कैसे भी कर सकते हैं ! मज़े की बात यह कि जैन साहब भी शे’र-ओ-शायरी के प्रशंसक थे. उन्हें कितने ही शे’र याद थे. अक्सर किसी प्रसंग के साथ मौजूं शे’र जड़ कर वे अपनी बात को प्रभावशाली बना देते. उनकी बेटी नीतू अर्थशास्त्र की छात्रा थी, बेटे अनु ने मैथमैटिक्स पढ़ा. इस दोनों के लिए जरूर मेरी शुद्ध हिन्दी हंसी का कारण बन जाती. इस दोस्ती में मेरे सुख का कारण यह है कि आज भी निर्मल जी का हिन्दी साहित्य के प्रति लगाव बरकरार है, पल्लव इस काम को दिल्ली में मेरी अनुपस्थिति में खूब संभाल लेते हैं.
निर्मल जैन और मैं तो अरसे तक हिंदू कॉलेज में ही रहे, लेकिन कॉलेज में सोशियोलॉजी पढ़ाने वाले सोशल एंथ्रोपोलॉजिस्ट हमारे मित्र विनय श्रीवास्तव जल्दी ही दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के एंथ्रोपोलॉजी विभाग में चले गए, फिर वे पीएचडी करने कैंब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय चले गए, बाद में वे एंथ्रोपोलॉजी विभाग में प्रोफेसर हो गए और एक समय बाद फिर लौट कर हमें मिले तो हिंदू कॉलेज में प्रिंसिपल बनकर !
उनसे परिचय और दोस्ती का जो नाता पहले-पहल हिंदू कॉलेज में आने पर जुड़ा था, वह हमेशा बरकरार रहा. यह जरूर है कि विनय दिन पर दिन व्यस्त से व्यस्ततम होते चले गए.
गंभीर मनन-चिंतन के धनी, प्रोफेसर विनय के तमाम भाषण और वक्तव्यों के बीच मुझे याद आते हैं शायर विनय खुर्शीद जो गज़ल लिखते थे, शे’र कहते थे.
कॉलेज की वार्षिक पत्रिका इंद्रप्रस्थ के अंक में उनकी ग़ज़ल प्रकाशित हुई.
कॉलेज के जयसिंह लॉन में, सर्दियों में कभी-कभार विनय श्रीवास्तव के साथ चाय पीते हुए सार्थक, गहन, दार्शनिक, सामाजिक संवादों की कितनी ही स्मृतियां हैं, अपने प्रिय शायरों की शायरी को धाराप्रवाह सुनाने के उनके लहजे की अनेक यादें हैं, तमाम पढ़ी गई किताबों की चर्चा की स्मृतियां हैं !
लेकिन अचानक ऐसे मित्र का दुनिया छोड़ जाना कितना बेमानी है ! वे ऐसे गए जैसे कोई जाता नहीं ! मन कहता है कि ऐसे जीते-जागते व्यक्तित्व जाकर भी नहीं जाते … कितनी-कितनी तरह कितने-कितने लोगों के जीवन में बने रहते हैं ….परिवार में.. छात्रों में … सहयोगियों में… मित्रों में…अपने अकादमिक-प्रशासनिक परिवेश में …
वे रहते हैं ….स्मृति बनकर, प्रेरणा बनकर और अपनी अनुपस्थिति का दुःख बनकर भी !
जीवन के इन वर्षों में अध्यापन की दुनिया से सेवानिवृत्त होकर, विनय कोलकोता में एन्थ्रोपॉलोजिकल सर्वे ऑफ़ इंडिया के डायरेक्टर थे.

हिंदू कॉलेज में हिन्दी विभाग ने ३१ जनवरी २०२० को, प्रभारी बिमलेंदु तीर्थंकर की अगुआई में विदाई समारोह का आयोजन किया. उस आयोजन के लिए मैं कृतज्ञता के साथ अपने विभाग और विद्यार्थियों की उपस्थिति की ओर देखती हूँ. इस दिन को लेकर मेरे साथ दो बातें घटी – कॉलेज ऑफिस में लगभग सप्ताह भर पहले मुझसे कहा गया – अब तो बहुत कम दिन रह गए मैडम ! और एक दिन पहले ही सहयोगी प्राध्यापिका ने कहा – अब बहुत हो गया पढ़ाना – आज तो क्लास रहने दीजिए !
इस तरह के कथनों के बावजूद मेरे मन में count down begins या उल्टी गिनती शुरू.. जैसा कोई भाव नहीं आया. जैसे सब दिन वैसे ही वह दिन भी आया – और आने वाला समय भी मेरे लिए ऐसा ही सहज-स्वाभाविक रहने वाला है, यह मैं जानती हूँ. चलिए मैं दोहरा दूं, कैसे !
आज से कई बरस पहले कैरियर को लेकर बहुत अधिक चिंता में हम नहीं रहते थे, और शायद अधिक सपने भी नहीं देखते थे, इसलिए पढ़ने के बाद पढ़ाऊँगी – यह सपना तो मैंने नहीं देखा था. लेकिन इतना जरूर कह सकती हूँ कि मेरा एक छोटा सा सपना हिंदू कॉलेज से जुड़कर लगभग पूरा हो गया, वह यह कि मैं जीवन में वह काम करूं जो मुझे अच्छा लगता है. कॉलेज में पहले दिन से लेकर आखिरी दिन तक पढ़ाना मुझे प्रिय लगता रहा. मुझे अपना विषय हिन्दी हमेशा पसंद रहा, हिन्दी से जुड़ने को तत्पर विद्यार्थियों की ललक हमेशा भाती रही. हर दिन का एक नई प्रेरणा लेकर आना, कुछ बेहतर करने की प्यास जगाना – बस इतना ही मेरी संतुष्टि के लिए काफी था. इसलिए हर दिन मेरे लिए समान रूप से महत्वपूर्ण या फिर समान रूप से सामान्य बना रहा, विदाई का दिन भी एक ऐसा ही दिन है रहा !
वह जो बीत गया सब याद आएगा, इसे भुला न पाएंगे, या आज की भाषा में जिसे ‘मिस यू’ कहते हैं – वह सब कहना मुझे जरूरी नहीं लग रहा – इसलिए कि अब तक बीता समय मेरे जीवन से एकाकार ही है, मुझसे अलग कहाँ ?
अच्छी संस्थाएं, अच्छा संग-साथ हमें भीतर से समृद्ध करता है – बेहतर बनाता है – हिंदू कॉलेज ने, वहां के संगी-साथियों-विद्यार्थियों ने मुझे आंतरिक वैभव दिया, बेहतर इंसान बनाया – इसके लिए मुझे सभी के प्रति कृतज्ञ होना ही चाहिए. लम्बे समय के सभी संगी-साथियों के प्रति कृतज्ञता सूचक मेरी शुभकामना पंक्तियां यह हो सकती हैं – जिनका बहुत अच्छा अनुवाद न कर पाने के कारण, मैं इंग्लिश में ही कहती हूँ –
