आज लघु पत्रिका दिवस है। लघु पत्रिका से ‘बनास जन’ की याद आती है। ‘बनास जन’ से पल्लव की याद आती है। युवा आलोचक पल्लव ने अपने कुशल संपादन और जुनून से ‘बनास जन’ को श्रेष्ठ लघु पत्रिकाओं में एक बना दिया है। पल्लव से उनकी साहित्यिक यात्रा, बनास जन की यात्रा को लेकर जानकी पुल ने उनसे बातचीत की। आप पूरी बातचीत पढ़ सकते हैं–

पल्लव जी आपका झुकाव साहित्य की दिशा में कब हुआ?
मैं जब कक्षा चार में आया तब मेरी माँ ने मेरे पढ़ने के लिए नंदन मंगवाना शुरू कर दिया। इसी के साथ मैं बाल भारती और पराग भी नियमित पढ़ने लगा। उन दिनों मेरे स्कूल में एक अध्यापक थे मणिपुष्पक उपाध्याय जी, जो मुझे प्रतिदिन एक दोहा या श्लोक लिखकर देते थे और उसका भावार्थ भी लिखवाते थे। जिसे मैं याद कर अगले दिन प्रार्थना सभा में सुनाता था। वह एक छोटा सा सरकारी स्कूल था जिसका नाम था राजकीय उच्च प्राथमिक विद्यालय पुलिस लाइंस, चित्तौड़गढ़। इस छोटे से सरकारी स्कूल के शिक्षक इतने समर्पित थे। परिवार में मेरे नाना जी स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी थे और वे साहित्य प्रेमी तो नहीं किन्तु पुस्तक प्रेमी थे। उनके संग्रह में बहुत सारी गांधी जी की किताबें थीं। वे मेरे लिए पहली बार बाल भारती लेकर आए थे। फिर भी उन दिनों मुझे पढ़ने का इतना चाव था कि जब नंदन वगैरह आती थी तो एक या दो दिन में ही मैं उन्हें पूरी की पूरी पढ़ जाता था तब मैं खाली समय में घर में रखा हिंदी शब्दकोष उठाकर पढ़ने लगता था। मुझे उसमें नए नए शब्दों को देखने और उनका अर्थ जानने में खूब रस मिलता। उन दिनों हमारे घर राजस्थान पत्रिका आता था जिसमें हर इतवार को एक पन्ना बच्चों के लिए होता था। मेरे पड़ोसी नईदुनिया मंगवाते थे जो तब अपने शिखर पर था और जिसको भी मैं खूब प्यार से पढता था। कह सकता हूँ कि इस समूचे वातावरण का मुझ पर गहरा असर पड़ा होगा।
साहित्य को लेकर आपके अंदर एक दीवानगी दिखाई देती है। इसकी शुरुआत कब से हुई?
असल में क्या हुआ कि कालेज में आते आते मैं दो काम करने लगा। पहला यह कि कविताएं लिखने लगा और दूसरा स्पिक मैके से जुड़ गया। स्पिक मैके एक संगठन है जो शास्त्रीय संगीत और नृत्य के कार्यक्रम युवाओं के लिए करवाता है। मेरे शहर में स्पिक मैके के सूत्रधार सदाशिव श्रोत्रिय थे जो स्वयं बहुत अच्छे कवि तो थे ही उससे भी पहले बेहद गुणी पाठक भी थे। उनके घर ही मैंने पहली बार हंस और पहल जैसी पत्रिकाएँ देखीं। इन्हीं दिनों मैं हमारे शहर के जिला पुस्तकालय में नियमित जाने लगा। मैंने वहां रखी सारी किताबें लगभग पांच सालों में देख डालीं। वहां एक गड़बड़ यह थी कि हिंदी किताबों के कई सारे केटलॉग तो पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष नरेश परिहार जी ने बना दिए थे जिनमें कहानी, उपन्यास, निबंध, नाटक इत्यादि थे लेकिन अंगरेजी किताबों का सूची पत्र नहीं था। एक दिन मैंने उन्हें कहा तो वे बोले, तुम्हीं बना दो। मैंने करीब हजार अंगरेजी किताबों का एक रजिस्टर में सूची पत्र महीने भर में बना दिया। फिर जब तक मैं एम ए में आया तब शहर में रह रहे कहानीकार स्वयं प्रकाश जी के संपर्क में आ चुका था, उनके संपर्क में आने और थोड़ा बहुत हिंदी साहित्य पढ़ लेने के बाद मुझे स्पिक मैके से निराशा होने लगी। मुझे लगने लगा कि संस्कृति के नाम पर हो रहा यह समूचा आयोजन यथास्थितिवादी है और फिर संस्कृति की यह कैसी परिभाषा है जिसमें साहित्य के लिए कोई जगह नहीं। तब मैं स्पिक मैके से अलग हो गया और अपने शहर में साहित्यिक गतिविधियाँ करने लगा। मैंने तब राजस्थान साहित्य अकादमी के सहयोग से पाठक मंच का गठन किया और पुस्तक चर्चा, लेखक से मुलाक़ात जैसे कार्यक्रम करवाने लगा। असल में मुझे स्पिक मैके के आयोजन करवाने का लंबा अनुभव था और कुछ न करना मुझे बेचैन करता था तो चित्तौड़ जैसे छोटे से शहर में मैं अपने कुछ मित्रों के साथ सक्रिय हो गया। स्वयं प्रकाश जी के होने से हम लोगों को सही दिशा मिली। हमने बेहद मामूली खर्च (केवल चाय के पैसे ) में अनेक गोष्ठियाँ करवाईं जिनमें ऋतुराज, नीलाभ, रघुनंदन त्रिवेदी, शिवराम जैसे लोग शहर से बाहर से आए। स्पिक मैके ने मुझे यह सीखा दिया था कि आयोजन अपने लिए नहीं बल्कि कला या कलाकार के लिए करवाने हैं तो अब कला की जगह साहित्य ने ले ली थी।
ऐसे कठिन समय में आप बनास जन जैसी पत्रिका नियमित रूप से निकाल रहे हैं और बेहतरीन निकाल रहे हैं। इसकी शुरुआत की कहानी बताएं।
बनास की कहानी शुरू होने में देर लगी। जब मैं पाठक मंच की गोष्ठियाँ करवा रहा था तब यह सुझाव आया कि हमें एक संस्था रजिस्टर्ड करवानी चाहिए ताकि बैंक खाता खुलवा सकें और कभी अकादमी से सहयोग भी लेकर कोई आयोजन करवा सकें। हम लोगों ने एक संस्था संभावना का गठन किया जिसके अध्यक्ष स्वयं प्रकाश बने। तभी अचानक उनके कारखाने यानी हिंदुस्तान ज़िंक लिमिटेड को वेदांता नामक कंपनी ने खरीद लिया और उन्हें नौकरी छोड़नी पड़ गई। उन्होंने तय कि वे इस जबरिया सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद भोपाल रहेंगे जहाँ उनके गहरे मित्र कमला प्रसाद थे। उनके भोपाल चले जाने के बाद वह वर्ष आया जब उनके साठ साल होने वाले थे। तब तक पत्रिकाओं इत्यादि से मैं यह जान गया था कि हिंदी में लेखक की षष्ठिपूर्ति मनाने का रिवाज़ है। मेरे संग्रह में नामवर जी और काशीनाथ जी के साठ साल पर छपे पहल और कहन के अंक भी थे। मेरे मन में आया कि जब इन लोगों की षष्ठिपूर्ति मनाई जा सकती है तो हमारे लेखक स्वयं प्रकाश जी की क्यों नहीं? और तब मैंने संभावना के मित्रों से बात की जिन्होंने सब कुछ करने का जिम्मा मुझे ही दे दिया। पहले सोचा कि इस मौके पर एक पुस्तक का प्रकाशन करेंगे जिसका मुझे आंशिक अनुभव स्पिक मैके की स्मारिका और कालेज की वार्षिक पत्रिका के प्रकाशन -मुद्रण से हो चुका था। आखिर जब तक सामग्री इकट्ठी हुई और मैं इसे कोई आकार देता तब तक मेरे मन में यह निश्चय हो गया था कि इसे पत्रिका की शक्ल में छापना चाहिए। मैं इस वक्त तक अनेक लघु पत्रिकाओं का नियमित ग्राहक और पाठक बन चुका था। जयपुर में हुए लघु पत्रिका सम्मलेन में शिरकत कर चुका था। उन दिनों मैं उदयपुर में था जहाँ मेरे मित्र और मार्गदर्शक हिमांशु पंड्या की घनघोर सोहबत मुझे सक्रिय बनाए रखती थी।
तो हिमांशु जी ने बनास का आइडिया दिया था?
अरे नहीं। हिमांशु जी की घनघोर सोहबत थी लेकिन वे उन लोगों में नहीं हैं जो ऐसे आइडिया दें जिनसे आपकी जान को आफत आए। मेरी फितरत ही कुछ ऐसी थी कि मैं खाली नहीं बैठ सकता था और ऐसा कुछ न कुछ करते रहना चाहता था जिसमें लोगों को इन्वॉल्व कर सकूं तो ऐसा एक काम पत्रिका निकालना हो सकता था। (हँसते हुए) मुझे यह भी लगता था कि हमारे दौर में यह काम कोई नहीं करेगा तो यह आंदोलन कैसे आगे बढ़ेगा। हालांकि मैं खूब जानता था कि इसमें बहुत समय, धन और ऊर्जा की जरूरत होगी। तब भी मुझे भरोसा था कि कोई काम ईमानदारी और लगन से किया जाए तो असंभव नहीं है। पहला अंक उदयपुर रहते हुए ही निकला। तब मेरा ठिकाना उदयपुर का था और मैं एक नितांत अस्थाई किस्म की नौकरी चित्तौड़गढ़ में कर रहा था।
पत्रिका निकालने में और क्या क्या हुआ?
एक तो मैं यह जान गया था कि सुरुचि बहुत बड़ा मूल्य है। कितनी भी महत्त्वपूर्ण बात आप सुरुचि से कहना नहीं जानते तो उसे कोई नहीं सुनेगा। मैंने बनास के मुद्रण के लिए उसी प्रेस, कागज़ और फॉण्ट का इस्तेमाल किया जो पीयूष दईया अपनी पत्रिका ‘रंगायन’ के लिए करते थी। यह वही अंक था जो स्वयं प्रकाश पर केंद्रित था और जिसे अंतत: दिल्ली के विश्व पुस्तक मेले में जारी किया गया। आपको जानकार ताज्जुब होगा कि जब मैंने स्वयं प्रकाश जी को इसकी योजना बताई थी तो वे इतने परेशान हुए कि उन्होंने मुझे तीन पेज की चिट्ठी लिखकर समझाया कि ऐसा करना बेकार का काम होगा। मैंने इसके जवाब में इतना सा कहा कि मैं लोगों को आप पर लिखने का निमंत्रण भेज चुका हूँ अब उन्हें मना करना और बुरा होगा।
प्रारम्भ में पत्रिका के आर्थिक स्रोत क्या थे?
दोस्त। दोस्तों ने मदद की। दोस्तों ने विज्ञापन दिलवाए। दोस्तों ने ही मेरे कंधे पर हाथ रखा और कहा कि करो।
हिंदी की नई पीढ़ी को आप किस तरह से देखते हैं?
प्रभात जी। मैं उन्हें क्या देखूंगा भला, मैं खुद उन्हीं में से एक हूँ। बस इतना सा कहना चाहता हूँ कि हमारी पीढ़ी में आत्मविश्वास गज़ब का है। उनके पास अवसर भी अनेक हैं और उन्हें कहीं अधिक सुविधाओं का सुख मिला है। चिंता मुझे यह होती है कि इस पीढ़ी का अनुभव संसार बहुत छोटा है, इसे विचारधारा की छोड़िये विचार की भी जरूरत नहीं है। इसी का परिणाम आप देख सकते हैं कि रचनाकारों की आयु छोटी होती जा रही है। दो चार किताबों में हमारा कथाकार हांफने लगता है।
आपको क्या पढ़ने में आनंद आता है और क्या पढ़ाने में आनंद आता है?
एक समय था जब मैं सिर्फ कविताऍं पढता था और तब मैंने क्रमश: अपने सभी प्रिय कवियों को पूरा पूरा पढ़ डाला था। नंदकिशोर आचार्य, अशोक वाजपेयी, शमशेर बहादुर सिंह, नन्द चतुर्वेदी, नागार्जुन सबको पढता गया था। ऐसा नहीं कि अब कविताएँ नहीं पढता, अभी भी पढता हूँ लेकिन अब मुझे कथेतर पढ़ने में बहुत आनंद आता है। आत्मकथा, संस्मरण, यात्रा आख्यान, रिपोर्ताज़ इत्यादि।
पढ़ाने में कई बार आपकी पसंद नहीं चलती। फिर भी मुझे कविता, कहानी और कथेतर पढ़ाने में बहुत मज़ा आता है। अक्सर मैं एक कहानी पढ़ाने के बहाने कई कहानियाँ पढ़ा देता हूँ।
कैसे?
जैसे मुझे मलबे का मालिक कहानी पढ़ाने को मिली है तो मैं उसके साथ ‘सिक्का बदल गया’ और ‘अमृतसर आ गया है’ न पढ़ाऊँ तो भारत विभाजन की बात पूरी नहीं लगती। और ये तीनों पढ़ाकर स्वयं प्रकाश जी की कहानी ‘पार्टीशन’ भी जो कह गई थी कि ‘पार्टीशन हुआ था नहीं हो रहा है, जारी है।’
ऐसे ही कविताओं में केदारनाथ सिंह की कविता ‘सुई और तागे के बीच’ पढ़ाते हुए मेरा मन भवानी भाई की कविता ‘घर की याद ‘ सुनाने का होता है। मीराँ पढ़ाते हुए मैं बाबर और सांगा के खानवा युद्ध तक जाता हूँ, मेवाड़ के इतिहास की अनेक परतें खोलता हूँ। मसला यही है कि इस तरह पढ़ाया जाए कि मेरे विद्यार्थी भी इन कवियों-लेखकों के साहित्य से रस लेना सीख जाएं।
आपको ऐसा नहीं लगता कि हिंदी साहित्य दिल्ली और दिल्ली से पूरब के केंद्रों पर अधिक केन्द्रित रहा है?
हाँ। हमारे राजस्थान में एक बार नन्द बाबू (कविवर नन्द चतुर्वेदी) ने कहा था कि हम उत्तर प्रदेश की मंडियाँ नहीं हैं तब वे इसी बात को दूसरे ढंग से कह रहे थे। इधर जैसे जैसे सत्ता में केन्द्रीकरण बढ़ा है उससे साहित्य भी अछूता नहीं रहा। प्रकाशक यहीं, बाजार यहीं, पुरस्कार यहीं, अकादेमी भी यहीं। फिर, क्षमा करें तो निवेदन करूँ, बिहार के मित्रों ने बहुत गड़बड़ की है। आपस में एक दूसरे की प्रशंसा से साहित्य की विश्वसनीयता घटती ही है। ऐसे में मुझे लघु पत्रिकाएं और लेखक संगठन जरूरी लगते हैं और अपने सीमित दायरों के बावजूद बहुलता का निर्माण करते हैं।
इसमें हिंदी के अन्य क्षेत्रों को वह मक़ाम नहीं मिला जो मिलना चाहिए था?
आप ही बताइये कि राजस्थान को हिंदी प्रान्त माना गया लेकिन राजस्थान के हिंदी लेखक को साहित्य अकादेमी ने पुरस्कार देने में सत्तर साल लगा दिए। क्या रांगेय राघव, नन्द चतुर्वेदी, विजेंद्र, ऋतुराज, स्वयं प्रकाश, मणि मधुकर का लेखन साहित्य अकादेमी पुरस्कार के योग्य नहीं था? उत्तराखंड के शैलेश मटियानी, विद्यासागर नौटियाल और पानू खोलिया? हिमाचल प्रदेश से एस आर हरनोट? रेणु को भी अकादेमी ने पुरस्कार नहीं दिया था और न राजेंद्र यादव-मन्नू भंडारी को। फिर भी मैं यह सोचता हूँ कि सारा दोष या जिम्मेदारी केवल सरकार या अकादेमी पर डालना गलत है। हमारे अन्य क्षेत्रों के लोगों को भी कुछ काम जमकर करने चाहिए। जिन रचनाकारों को उपेक्षित समझा गया उन पर कायदे से काम हो, मूल्यांकन हो।
पुरस्कार के अलावा और क्या किया जा सकता है?
मैं कहता हूँ कि केवल लोगों को ही पुरस्कार क्यों? साहित्य अकादेमी ‘भारतीय साहित्य के निर्माता’ शृंखला में लेखकों पर मोनोग्राफ छापती है क्या इस तरह की शृंखला संस्थाओं और पत्रिकाओं पर नहीं होनी चाहिए? हिंदी साहित्य सम्मेलन और सरस्वती पर कौन बात करेगा? यदि हम बहुत बड़ी भाषा और समाज के लोग हैं तो हमारे काम में भी बहुत विविधता और व्यापकता की जरूरत है।
आपने डिजिटल दौर में भी प्रिंट के माध्यम से ही बनास जन के प्रसार का रास्ता चुना है। क्या इसके पीछे सुचिंतित योजना है?
(हँसते हुए) इसके लिए आप मुझे थोड़ा पुराना आदमी भी कह सकते हैं। जब बनास की शुरुआत हुई थी तब मेरे मन में हिंदी का लघु पत्रिका आंदोलन ही था जिसने ढेर सारी महत्त्वपूर्ण पत्रिकाएँ हमारे पाठकों को दी और यह सब प्रिंट में ही था। हालाँकि बनास की शुरुआत तक डिजिटल पत्रिकाएं और माध्यम आ चुके थे तब भी मेरे मन में उसी आंदोलन की परम्परा गहराई से जमी हुई थी जिसमें श्रम का भाव भी निहित था। प्रूफ पढ़ना, प्रेस जाना, पैकिट बनाना, डाकखाने जाना और तब पत्रिका का पाठक के हाथ में होना। इस समूची प्रक्रिया से रोमांच होता था और लगता था कि यह कुछ है जो मेरी तरफ से पाठक तक गया है और यह रहेगा। बना रहेगा। दूसरी बात यह कि मुझे लगता है सारे इंटरनेट के बावजूद पाठक अभी भी प्रिंट पर कहीं ज्यादा भरोसा करता है। अभी भी छपी हुई किताब की जरूरत और उपयोगिता बनी हुई है। हमारे पाठक केवल महानगरों में नहीं हैं वे छोटे छोटे गाँवों और कस्बों में भी हैं।
आखिरी बात यह कि डिजिटल से भी कोई दुराव नहीं है। आप जानते ही हैं कि प्रिंट के बावजूद बनास के हर अंक को नोटनल पर भी पढ़ा जा सकता है। क्योंकि पाठक तो इंग्लैण्ड और आस्ट्रेलिया में भी हैं।
बनास के प्रकाशन-सम्पादन ने आपके लेखन को कितना प्रभावित किया?
जब भी ऐसा सवाल आता है तो मैं दुष्यंत कुमार को उद्धृत करता हूँ –
किससे कहें कि छत की मुंडेरों से गिर पड़े
हमने ही ख़ुद पतंग उड़ाई थी शौकिया
तो अपना लिखना पढ़ना प्रभावित होता है इसमें कोई शक़ नहीं। मैं जब साहित्य की दुनिया में आया था तब खूब कविताएँ लिखता था, छपने की हड़बड़ी तब भी नहीं थी। फिर शोध करते करते कहानी समीक्षा की तरफ ऐसा मुड़ा कि कविता पीछे रह गई। अभी भी यह होता है कि जो सम्पादक डंडा मारकर काम करवा लें तो कर देता हूँ। हाँ, जब भी बनास का नया अंक छपकर आता है तो महीने भर तक पैकेट बनाने और डाकघर जाने का ऐसा काम आ जाता है कि बिलकुल फुर्सत नहीं होती।
यह सारा काम आप अकेले ही करते हैं?
हाँ। मुझे स्वीकार करने में कोई संकोच नहीं कि मुझे टीम बनाना नहीं आता। मुझे इस काम में आनंद भी मिलता है लेकिन थक जाता हूँ, झुंझला भी जाता हूँ। दिल्ली के मित्रों को डाक से बनास नहीं भेजने की जिद करता हूँ ताकि समय, ऊर्जा और पैसे की बचत हो।
आप दिल्ली के सबसे एलिट कॉलेज में से एक में हिन्दी पढ़ाते हैं। इस अनुभव के बारे में कुछ बताइए। क्या बदलाव दिखता है आपको आजकल विद्यार्थियों की हिंदी चेतना में?
आप कहते हैं तो मान लेता हूँ कि हिन्दू कालेज एलिट कालेज है लेकिन मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता। इस कालेज की मेरी कक्षा में हिंदी पट्टी के हर प्रान्त के अनेक इलाकों के बच्चे आते हैं। इस साल भी बाड़मेर के धोरों-कस्बों से विद्यार्थी आए हैं। मैं उन्हें छेड़ता भी हूँ कि क्या बाड़मेर में कालेज में नहीं है जो यहाँ आ गए। इसे मेरी कसक भी समझिए कि आज़ादी के इतने वर्षों बाद भी हमारे राज्य अपने अपने यहाँ एक हिन्दू कालेज सरीखा कालेज भी नहीं बना पाए।
यहाँ पढ़ाने का सबसे बड़ा सुख यह है कि कक्षा में जिन लेखकों, किताबों की आप प्रकारांतर चर्चा करते हैं अगले दिन कुछ विद्यार्थी उनसे परिचित होकर आते हैं। आप भक्तिकाल पढ़ाते हुए कहिए कि मीरां पर माधव हाड़ा जी ने बढ़िया काम किया है तो अगले दिन कोई बच्चा जरूर हाथ में ‘पचरंग चोला पहर सखी री’ लेकर आ जाएगा। एक अध्यापक को और क्या चाहिए?
क्या कोई दुःख भी है?
भाई साहब। आप कक्षा की चोरी नहीं कर सकते। कर ली तो बच्चे अगले दिन ऐसी सवालिया निगाहों से देखते हैं कि आपको लज्जा आ जाए।
आपके शिक्षक साथी?
रामेश्वर राय जी हमारे विश्वविद्यालय के लोकप्रिय शिक्षकों में से हैं जिनका स्नेह -सान्निध्य मुझे मिलता है। रचना जी मुझे लिखने पढ़ने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करती रहती हैं। विमलेन्दु जी के साथ रहता हूँ तो सारे तनाव छू हो जाते हैं। वे लाजवाब वक्ता हैं जो आपको एकदम खुश कर देंगे। कुल मिलाकर बहुत अच्छे शिक्षक साथी मिले हैं।
कोई बदलाव देख रहे हैं?
हाँ। हमारा विद्यार्थी नब्बे या सौ प्रतिशत लाकर भी हिंदी इसलिए नहीं पढ़ रहा है कि उसके पास और कोई विकल्प नहीं था बल्कि वह सायास पढ़ रहा है। उसे लगता है कि हिंदी पढ़कर भी वह अच्छा कैरियर बना सकता है। वह बहुत जागरूक विद्यार्थी है। वह दुनिया से बाख़बर है। बहुधा वह एक जिम्मेदार नागरिक भी है। अच्छी बात यह है कि हिंदी विभाग की गतिविधियां बहुत प्रेरक हैं तो तीन सालों की पढ़ाई में हमारा विद्यार्थी न केवल अच्छी पढ़ाई करता है बल्कि उसे अपने समय के बड़े लेखकों-पत्रकारों से रूबरू होने का अवसर भी मिल जाता है। विभाग की तीन पत्रिकाओं और कालेज की पत्रिकाओं में उसे छपने और छापने का अनुभव भी मिलता है।
आखिरी सवाल। लघु पत्रिका दिवस के बहाने यह बातचीत हुई है। आप लघु पत्रिकाओं को लेकर इतने दीवाने क्यों दिखाई देते हैं?
