क़रीब सवा सौ बरस पहले मेरा पिछला जनम स्पेन में हुआ था और मैं एक मुसव्विर था। मैंने ज़िन्दगी में बहुत-सी तस्वीरें बनाई थीं मगर “वो एक तस्वीर” बनानी अभी बाक़ी थी जो मुझे दुनिया भर में मशहूर बना देती। मेरे यार-दोस्त कहते थे कि जब तक मुझे किसी से इश्क़ नहीं होगा, मैं “वो एक तस्वीर” नहीं बना पाऊँगा। मुझे भी इस हसीन हादसे का बेसब्री से इंतिज़ार था। एक रोज़ जब मेरा पैंतीसवाँ जन्मदिन था, मैं सुबह-सुबह अपने स्टूडियो पहुँच गया और सोचने लगा कि आज कोई ख़ास तस्वीर बनाऊँगा। मैं बहुत देर तक कैनवस को देखता रहा, लेकिन मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि आगे क्या करूँ। मेरे सामने बहुत-से रंगों की डिबिया थीं। मैं बारी-बारी से उन रंगों के बारे में सोचता, लेकिन ज़ेहन में कोई ख़याल नहीं उभर रहा था। उस रोज़ मुझे लगा कि शायद मैं आज के बाद कभी कोई तस्वीर नहीं बना पाऊँगा। वक़्त लम्हा-दर-लम्हा आगे सरकता रहा। सुबह से दोपहर और फिर शाम हो गई। मैं अपने-आप से डरने लगा। मैं अपने-आप में सिमटने लगा। मैं बेहोश हो गया। बेहोशी की हालत में मुझे महसूस हुआ कि कोई “देवी” मेरा नाम लेकर पुकार रही है। मैंने अपनी अधखुली आँखों से उस “देवी” को देखा। उसके चारों तरफ़ नूर ही नूर था। उसने मेरी तरफ़ ख़ंजर बढ़ाते हुए कहा, ‘ज़िन्दगी को जावेदाँ बनाने वाली तस्वीर मामूली रंगों से नहीं, शाह-रग में बहते हुए लहू से बनती है।’
उस “देवी” की आवाज़ में कुछ ऐसी कशिश थी कि मैं उसकी बात अनसुनी नहीं कर सका। मैंने उसके हाथ से ख़ंजर लेकर अपने सीने में उतार दिया। मेरे सीने से लहू की धार फूट पड़ी। “देवी” मुस्कुराने लगी। मैं तस्वीर बनाने लगा। मेरी उँगलियाँ कूची में तब्दील होने लगीं। धीरे-धीरे कैनवस पर बनती हुईं लहू की सुर्ख़ लकीरों के दरमियान एक औरत का चेहरा उभरने लगा, जिसकी मूँछें भी थीं। तस्वीर मुकम्मल करने के बाद मैंने “देवी” से कहा, ‘मैंने अपनी ज़िन्दगी का मक़्सद पूरा कर लिया है। अब मुझे रिहाई चाहिए।’
‘रिहाई ज़रूर मिलेगी! मगर ज़िन्दगी का जश्न मनाने के बाद!!’
ये बात कहकर “देवी” हँसने लगी। उसे हँसते हुए देखकर मैं भी हँसने लगा। वो मेरी तरफ़ बढ़ी और उसने मेरे ज़ख़्मी सीने पर बोसा किया। उस बोसे की छुअन से मेरा ज़ख़्म भर गया। ज़ख़्म भरते ही मुझे होश आ गया। मैंने देखा कि स्टूडियो में कोई नहीं है। कैनवस से और मेरी उँगलियों से अब भी ताज़े लहू की बूँदें टपक रही थीं। जो कुछ भी हुआ, मेरी समझ से बाहर था। मैंने ये बात अपने एक क़रीबी दोस्त से कही, तो उसे भी यक़ीन नहीं आया। अगले हफ़्ते एक साझा आर्ट एक्ज़िबिशन में जब मैं उस तस्वीर को ले गया, तो उसे किसी ने भी नहीं ख़रीदा लेकिन सबने तारीफ़ की। इस तस्वीर के बारे में इतनी बातें हुईं कि उन दिनों स्पेन घूमने आई हुई “क़जर की शहज़ादी” ने तस्वीर देखने की ख़्वाहिश जताई। मैंने उसे अपने स्टूडियो में आने की दावत दी। उस शहज़ादी ने मेरी दावत क़ुबूल कर ली। जब हम मिले थे तो हम दोनों एक-दूसरे को देखकर बहुत हैरान हुए। क्यूँकि शहज़ादी का चेहरा, बेहोशी की हालत में बनाई गई उस तस्वीर से हू-ब-हू मिलता था। ये ख़बर दुनिया भर में आग की तरह फैल गई। उस वाक़िया के बाद मेरी पहचान एक “सायकिक मुसव्विर” के रूप में होने लगी। दुनिया के मशहूर मुसव्विरों में मेरा नाम शुमार किया जाने लगा।
