इतिहास भले ही महलों और मैदानों में तय होता हो, पर कभी-कभी बाग़-बाग़ीचों में भी उसके कुछ पन्ने लिखे जाते हैं. साल 1649 या 1650 के किसी रोज़ बुरहानपुर के एक शाही बाग़ में ऐसा ही हुआ था. शहज़ादा अपने हरम की महिलाओं के साथ वहाँ तफ़रीह कर रहा था. उस पिकनिक में उनकी मौसी, जिनके शौहर मीर ख़लील दक्कन में मुग़लिया फौज़ के एक आला अफ़सर हुआ करते थे, और उनके साथ आयीं औरतें भी शामिल थीं. आम के एक पेड़ के पास गुनगुनाती अल्हड़ की ओर शहज़ादे की नज़र गयी. तभी उस अल्हड़ ने शाही तौर-तरीकों की परवाह किये बिना उछल कर एक डाली पकड़ी और झटके से एक आम तोड़ लिया. अपनी कठोर गंभीरता और मजहबी पाबंदियों के लिए पूरी सल्तनत में ख्यात शहज़ादा वहीं थम के रह गया. दो-चार घड़ियों के बाद उसकी सुध-बुध वापस लौटी.
बहरहाल, कुछ दिनों के बाद हीराबाई, जो कि उस अल्हड़ का नाम था, हीराबाई ज़ैनाबादी बन कर शहज़ादे के हरम में आ गयी. शहज़ादा उसके प्यार में डूबता ही जा रहा था. कहते हैं कि इश्क़ और मुश्क़ छुपाये नहीं छुपते. बात दूर आगरे में बैठे बादशाह के कानों तक पहुँची. बादशाह के साथ ही रहनेवाले उनके सबसे पसंदीदा शहज़ादे ने भी उनके कान भरने में कमी नहीं की. इन बातों से परेशान शहज़ादा कुछ जुगत लगाते, इससे पहले ही ज़ैनाबादी दुनिया से चल बसी.
कुछ सालों बाद वह शहज़ादा औरंगज़ेब आलमग़ीर के नाम हिंदुस्तान का बादशाह बना. उसने अपने पिता और पूर्व बादशाह को उनकी बेग़म की क़ब्र पर जाने तक की मनाही कर दी. पूरी सल्तनत में उसके ख़िलाफ़ बादशाह को उकसानेवाले शहज़ादे दारा शुकोह को खोजा जाता रहा और जब वह मिला तो घोर ज़िल्लत के साथ मौत दी गयी. हीराबाई ज़ैनाबादी के प्यार पर ईमान से भी ज़्यादा भरोसा करनेवाला औरंगज़ेब ताउम्र किसी पर भी भरोसा न कर सका. हिंदुस्तान की तारीख़ में सबसे बड़े ख़ित्ते पर सबसे ज़्यादा दिनों तक बादशाहत करनेवाला आलमग़ीर ताउम्र बेचैन रहा
