कई बरस पहले जब इतिहासकार रामचन्द्र गुहा वेरियर एल्विन की जीवनी लिख रहे थे, जर्मन विद्वान निकोलस बोयल ने उन्हें जीवनी लेखन के तीन मंत्र बताए थे। उनमें से सबसे महत्वपूर्ण शायद यह है: किसी जीवनी का मूल्य उस व्यक्ति से जुड़े अन्य इन्सानों के चित्रण द्वारा निर्धारित किया जा सकता है। इस आधार पर गुहा द्वारा लिखी महात्मा गांधी की जीवनी के दूसरे और अंतिम भाग, गांधी: द इयर्स दैट चेंज्ड द वर्ल्ड, को चार इन्सानों के आईने से देख सकते हैं।
पहली वह स्त्री जिसे गांधी ने कभी अपनी “आध्यात्मिक पत्नी” कहा था। 1919 में लाहौर यात्रा के दौरान गांधी रबीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर की भतीजी और बेहतरीन गायिका एवं लेखिका सरलादेवी चौधुरानी के घर रुके थे। उस समय गांधी का ब्रह्मचर्य व्रत अपने तेरहवें साल में थे लेकिन वे तुरंत “सरलादेवी के प्रति सम्मोहित हो गए”। वे जल्द ही फिर से लाहौर आए और इस बार अपने भतीजे मगनलाल को खत लिखा कि “सरलादेवी हरेक रूप में मुझ पर प्रेम बरसा रहीं हैं।” वे गांधी के साप्ताहिक अखबार यंग इंडिया में नियमित प्रकाशित होने लगीं।
गांधी और सरलादेवी एक दूसरे को नियमित खत लिखने लगे। “तुम मेरी नींद में भी मुझे तड़पाती हो,” गांधी ने एक पत्र में लिखा।
यह संबंध “दैहिक संपूर्ति” के इतना करीब आ गया था कि घबराए हुए चक्रवर्ती राजगोपालाचारी ने गांधी को पीछे लौट जाने को कहा नहीं तो यह उनके लिए घनघोर “शर्म और मृत्यु” की वजह बन जाएगा। गांधी ने उनकी सलाह मान अपने कदम रोक तो लिए लेकिन वे उनके भीतर देर तक स्पंदित होती रहीं। दिलचस्प यह कि इस प्रकरण के कुछ ही समय बाद गांधी जब अपनी आत्मकथा लिखने बैठे, तो उन्होंने सत्य के साथ अपने तमाम प्रयोगों का उल्लेख किया, वैवाहिक जीवन के अंतरंग पहलू उजागर किए लेकिन सरलादेवी को छुपा ले गए।
दूसरे किरदार हैं गांधी के दत्तक पुत्र महादेव देसाई। 1938 में गांधी किसी मसले पर महादेव से काफी नाराज हो गए। इसके बाद महादेव ने अपनी गलती को स्वीकारते हुए एक लेख हरिजन के लिए लिखा। गांधी ने इसे बहुत कठोरता से संपादित किया कि उनके शिष्य के विचार रत्ती भर भी उनसे अलग न जाएँ, लेकिन गांधी ने महादेव द्वारा लिखी एक छोटी सी कविता उस लेख के साथ जाने दी। वह कविता थी: “संतों के साथ स्वर्ग में रहना/ एक वरदान और दुर्लभ अनुभव है/लेकिन किसी संत के साथ पृथ्वी पर रहना/अलग ही कहानी है।“
चार साल बाद वह संत अपने शिष्य की मृत देह को नहला रहा था। गांधी, महादेव और तमाम नेता भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के बाद हिरासत में ले लिए गए थे। पूना के आगा खाँ पैलेस में बंद थे। देसाई की मृत्यु इसी हिरासत में पंद्रह अगस्त 1942 को हुई थी, भारत को आजादी मिलने से ठीक पाँच साल पहले और गांधी द्वारा भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन की घोषणा के ठीक एक हफ्ते बाद।
इस मृत्यु को गुहा बड़ी मार्मिकता से चित्रित करते हैं। महल में ही महादेव का अंतिम संस्कार हुआ। उसके बाद गांधी उस स्थल पर रोज सुबह जा गीता का बारहवाँ अध्याय पढ़ते थे जो भक्ति पर केन्द्रित है, कभी उस जगह की राख़ के कतरे माथे से लगाते थे। एक तिहत्तर साल का वृद्ध, जो हिरासत में है, रोज सुबह मिट्टी के ढेर को गीता पढ़कर सुनाता है, मिट्टी माथे से लगाता है। यह उस वृद्ध के बारे में क्या बताता है?
बाकी दो हैं मुहम्मद अली जिन्ना और बी आर अंबेडकर, जो गांधी की नैतिक और राजनैतिक शक्ति के लिए सबसे बड़ी चुनौती थे। अंबेडकर गांधी को अपने समुदाय का, और जिन्ना मुसलमानों का नेता मानने से इंकार करते थे। अंबेडकर अनुसूचित जातियों के उत्थान के लिए कानून चाहते थे, गांधी सवर्णों के हृदय परिवर्तन पर बल देते थे। अंबेडकर के साथ चले लंबे और कसमसाते संवाद के दौरान गांधी के विचार इस मसले पर बदलते गए जिसे गुहा एकदम ठीक रेखांकित करते हैं: “अंबेडकर का गांधी गहरा प्रभाव पड़ा था जिसे वे शायद स्वीकारने से भी बचते थे।”
अंबेडकर तो फिर भी काँग्रेस में समाहित हो गए थे, जिन्ना ने गांधी को सबसे बड़ा धक्का दिया था। भारत विभाजन हिन्दू-मुस्लिम एकता के लिए प्रयासरत गांधी की व्यक्तिगत हार थी। विभाजन भले ही कई पीढ़ियों की नकामयाबी का नतीजा था, गुहा संकेत देते हैं कि गांधी ने जिस तरह खिलाफत आंदोलन के दौरान मुसलमानों का समर्थन किया उसने भारत में कट्टर इस्लाम को बढ़ावा दिया। जिन्ना जो तब तक काँग्रेस के साथ थे, मुस्लिम सांप्रदायिकता के विरोध में थे, वे जल्द ही काँग्रेस से अलग हो गए, उस रास्ते पर चल पड़े जो सीधा भारत विभाजन को जाता था।
गुहा गांधी का कई जगह बचाव करते हैं, लेकिन उनकी तमाम सीमाओं का भी उल्लेख करते हैं — मसलन अपने बेटों के साथ किया अन्याय।
गांधी गुहा के विषय हैं, वे उनकी खोज भी हैं। गांधी के जरिये गुहा स्वतंत्र होते भारत की कथा कहते हैं। गांधी के जीवन में आए अनेक किरदार, उनका टैगोर, नेहरू, सीएफ एंड्रूज इत्यादि से संवाद उन्हें स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम का रुपक बनाता हैं। गांधी के जरिये बीसवीं सदी के भारत में प्रवेश किया जा सकता है। गांधी पर बहुत लिखा गया है। यह जीवनी उस लेखन का बढ़िया विस्तार करती है। कई महाद्वीपों में फैले अभिलेखों को अपना स्रोत बनाती है, जिसमें गांधी के सचिव प्यारेलाल के निजी दस्तावेज़ भी हैं जिन पर काम करने वाले गुहा गांधी के पहले जीवनीकार हैं।
गांधी का अन्य विलक्षण पहलू यह है कि वे खुद को न सिर्फ अपने परिवार का या साबरमती और वर्धा आश्रम का,बल्कि पूरे भारत का अभिवावक मानते थे। पिछली सदी में कई बड़े नेता हुए थे लेकिन क्या माओ, चर्चिल या रूज़वेल्ट सरीखे राजनेताओं से यह अपेक्षा की जा सकती है कि वे अनजान लोगों के खतों का जवाब देंगे जो उनसे अपनी पारिवारिक समस्याओं पर चर्चा करना चाहते थे? कोई भी राजनेता शायद ब्रह्मचर्य पर सार्वजनिक सलाह नहीं देगा। लेकिन गांधी सिर्फ महात्मा नहीं, वे बापू भी थे।
भारतीय संस्कृति में एक अभिवावक से अक्सर अपेक्षा होती है कि वह अपनी संवेदनाएं छुपा कर रखेगा। महादेव की मृत्यु के अठारह महीने के भीतर कस्तूरबा की मृत्यु उसी पैलेस में हो गयी। बहुत कम समय में गांधी ने वे दो इंसान खो दिये थे जिनका उनके निजी जीवन में, उनके सार्वजनिक कर्मों के निर्वाह में बहुत बड़ा योगदान था,जिनके बगैर गांधी शायद कभी गांधी नहीं हो पाते। एक वृद्ध इंसान जो अभी भी जेल में है, वह इस आघात को किस तरह जी रहा था? “वह इस त्रासद अनुपस्थिति पर शोक करते हैं क्योंकि वह जो आज हैं उसमें उनकी (कस्तूरबा) बहुत बड़ी भूमिका रही है। लेकिन वे एक दार्शनिक संयम ओढ़े रहते हैं…जब मैं और मेरे भाई शुक्रवार को उनसे विदा ले रहे थे, वे वही चुटकुले सुना रहे थे जिन्हें वे आंसुओं की जगह इस्तेमाल करते आए थे।” यह देवदास गांधी ने लिखा था जब वे अपनी माँ की अस्थियों के साथ अपने पिता से विदा ले रहे थे। भारतीय संस्कृति में एक मनुष्य और है जिसे अपार संयम के लिए याद किया जाता है — वह गांधी के आदर्श थे।
गुहा अपनी किताब का अंत गांधी की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि से करते हैं — सत्य की तलाश। गांधी ने अपने जीवन के हरेक पहलू को सार्वजनिक कर दिया, अपनी वासना, खामियों और उन्माद पर लिखा। जिन घटनाओं पर उन्होंने नहीं लिखा लेकिन जिसकी चर्चा अपने करीबी मित्रों से की (मसलन सरलादेवी पर हुए खत), वे उनके मरने के बाद प्रकाशित हो गए। “पता नहीं हम उन बड़ी हस्तियों के बारे में क्या सोचते…अगर हम उनके जीवन की तमाम अंतरंगताओं को इस कदर जान जाते,” गुहा लिखते हैं।
अनेक भारतीय गांधी को नकारते हैं। कुछ को ढेर सारी शिकायतें हैं, कुछ गांधी से कोरी नफरत करते हैं। यह जीवनी उन्हें अपना मत परिवर्तित करने को प्रेरित कर सकती है। हो सकता है वे मानने लगें या मानना चाहें कि गांधी वाकई राष्ट्र-पिता थे, एक विशेषण जो पहली बार गांधी के धुर वैचारिक विरोधी सुभाष चंद्र बोस ने प्रयुक्त किया था जब वे आजाद हिन्द फ़ौज़ की स्थापना कर रहे थे।
बहुत ही सारगर्भित संक्षिप्त है।बढ़िया और पुस्तक के प्रति जिज्ञासा जगाती हुई।आशुतोष हमारे समय के संयमित लेखक पत्रकार हैं जिनका सरोकार मनुष्य के प्रति गहरी संवेदनाओं से भरा है।गांधी की इस नए जीवन वृतांत ने उनका एक और पक्ष खोला है।जल्दी ही पढ़ता हूँ।आभार आशुतोष का और प्रभात रंजन का।
