समकालीन हिन्दी कहानी का परिदृश्य विविधताओं से भरा हुआ है। कई पीढ़ियाँ एक साथ रच रही हैं। सबके अपने-अपने जीवनानुभव हैं और कथा-कथन के अपने-अपने अंदाज़। अनुकृति उपाध्याय नई पीढ़ी की कथा-लेखिका हैं और जपानी सराय उनका पहला कथा-संकलन है। इस संकलन की कहानियों से गुज़रते हुए हम सर्वथा एक नए कथालोक की यात्रा पर होते हैं, जहाँ हमारा सामना उस संसार से होता है जो हिन्दी कहानी में अपेक्षाकृत कम चित्रित-वर्णित हुआ है। अनुकृति उपाध्याय की कहानियों में नवाचार केवल कथानक के स्तर पर नहीं है, बल्कि कथ्य और कहन की शैली के स्तर पर भी यहाँ बहुत कुछ नया घटित होता है। इन कहानियों में नाटकीय सामर्थ्य अपनी प्रभावशाली भंगिमाओं के साथ उपस्थित है। हिन्दी कहानी अब तक इस नाटकीय सामर्थ्य के लिए अधिकांशत: लोककथाओं, किंवदन्तियों, जनश्रुतियों और लोक-विश्वासों तथा पारम्परिक प्रेमाख्यानों के भरोसे रही है। इन कहानियों में इनसे परे जाकर समकालीन जीवन के अन्तर्द्वन्द्वों से यह नाटकीय सामर्थ्य अर्जित करने का प्रयास किया गया है। प्रेम यहाँ है, पर वह अख्यान की मोहकता के साथ नहीं बल्कि इस समय की यांत्रिकता के दबावों में पिस कर मानवीय सम्वेदनाओं की तलाश करते हुए उपस्थित है। समकालीनता के जो आन्तरिक टकराव हैं, अनुकृति उपाध्याय की नज़र उन टकरावों के प्रति बेहद सम्वेदनशील है। इन टकरावों के महीन तंतुओं से वह अपनी कहानियों के भीतर एक ऐसा संसार रचती हैं जहाँ जीवन की तहों के भीतर छिपी मनुष्य की आकांक्षाओं और सम्बन्धों की गरिमा उद्घाटित होती है। जापानी सराय, चेरी ब्लॉसम, शावार्मा जैसी कहानियों को इस संदर्भ में रेखांकित किया जा सकता है। इन कहानियों में प्रतिकात्मकता और कथा-शिल्प की जटिलताओं का आग्रह नहीं है। अपने लेखन के आरम्भिक दौर में ही यह सहजता अर्जित करना एक बड़ी उपलब्धि है।
हरसिंगार के फूल जैसी कहानी में स्मृतियों की अवाजाही से सम्वेदनाओं का एक आर्द्र लोक सृजित होता है। इस आवाजाही की त्वरा में एक विलक्षण लयात्मकता है, जिससे संगीत उपजता है। मौना और विश्वा की यह प्रणय-कथा जिन स्थितियों में अपने शिखर पर पहुँचती है उसकी पृष्ठभूमि में मृत्यु की छाया है। प्रेम की दीप्ति में देह के मिलन की उत्ताप भरी भंगिमाएँ एक ऐसे लोक को रचती हैं जिससे गुज़रते हुए पाठक के भीतर कोई नम सोता फूट पड़ता है। मानवीय सम्बन्धों और सम्वेदनाओं के लिए आज का समय दुर्भिक्ष-काल है। इसकी चिन्ता आज वैश्विक चिन्ता बन चुकी है। आदमी आज अपने व्यक्तित्व की निजताएँ खोकर भीड़ का हिस्सा बनता जा रहा है। अपने-आप से, अपने आत्म से अलग होकर जीने की इस भयावहता को अनुकृति उपाध्याय की कहानियाँ निर्ममता के साथ उजागर करती हैं। प्रेजेंटेशन में मीरा का संघर्ष कैरियर का संघर्ष नहीं है। वह अपने आत्म को पाना चाहती है, पर मनु और पारम्परिक संयुक्त परिवार की रूढ़याँ उसे दलदल में फँसाए रखना चाहती हैं। रिश्तों की आड़ में युवा शिकारी दीपू के आक्रमण का वह सामना करती है और अपने लिए राह बनाती है।
मुझे विश्वास है कि इस संकलन की कहानियों को पढ़ते हुए पाठक को मात्र नए जीवनानुभव ही नहीं मिलेंगे। इन जीवनानुभवों के आंतरिक संश्लेषण से बुनी हुई कहानियों में पीड़ा और सुख का अनूठा द्वन्द्व मिलेगा। अनुकृति उपाध्याय की कहानियों को केवल उनके प्रभाव और रसात्मकता के आधार पर मूल्यांकित नहीं किया जा सकता। कई बार वह कथा-शैली के प्रचलित रूपों का अतिक्रमण करती हैं, पर उनका यह अतिक्रमण कहानी के चरित्र और सम्वेदन को नए आवेगों से पूरित करता है। यथार्थ की संश्लिष्टता के कारण ये कहानियाँ कहानी-कला की कई शर्तों को पूरा करती हैं और यथार्थ की विविधवर्णी छवियों की पुनर्रचना करती हैं। इस आश्वस्तकारी आरम्भ के लिए शुभकामनाएँ!
