युवा लेखक त्रिपुरारि का पहला कहानी संग्रह आने वाला है ‘नॉर्थ कैम्पस’। दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय का नॉर्थ कैम्पस मेरे जैसे हज़ारों लोगों के नोसटेलजिया में हैं। एक पढ़कर देखते हैं कि कैसा जादू जगाया है इस लेखक ने-

उसे अब तक इस ख़याल ने नहीं छुआ था कि उदास लम्हों में उधड़ी हुई साँसों की नुमाइश करना कोई गुनाह नहीं है। दिल के बाग़ में जब मातमी हवाओं की तपिश तेज़ हो जाती, तो शिकस्ता धड़कनें रेज़ा-रेज़ा हो कर बिखरने लगतीं। अक्सर, नींद की पथरीली ज़मीन पर चलते-चलते ख़्वाब के तलवों से लहू रिसने लगता। लहू की बूँद दरख़्त से टूटे हुए सुर्ख़-ओ-ताज़ा गुलमोहर की तरह नज़र आती। उम्र की उड़ती हुई रेत में पोशीदा वजूद दफ़्फ़तन चीख़ता और कहता कि आँखों का इंतिज़ार अब तक मुकम्मल नहीं हुआ है। ज़िंदगी की धुन पर रक़्स करते-करते आख़िरकार, एक रोज़ ख़ुद से तंग आकर उसने तीन दिन पहले बनाई गई टिंडर की प्रोफ़ाइल ओपेन की। छह दफ़ा लेफ़्ट स्वाइप करने के बाद उसकी उंगलियाँ राइट स्वाइप करने को राज़ी हो गईं। महज़ तीन सेकेंड्स के भीतर ही ‘इट्स अ मैच’ का नोटिफ़िकेशन मोबाइल स्क्रीन पर चमका। उसके होंटों पर मुस्कुराहट की महीन चाशनी फैल गई। उसने एक मैसेज टाइप किया और सेंड कर दिया—
“आई जस्ट लव्ड योर नेम… मोहा!”
“इवेन आई लाइक्ड योर नेम. सोहम… इट साउंड्स गुड!!”
“थैंक्स…”
“ओके कूल. योर प्लेस ऑर माइन?”
“योर्स…”
“कूल. हेयर इज़ माय नम्बर. 7710982811. कॉल मी वन्स यू रीच नॉर्थ कैम्पस.”
“फ़क! यू लिव नियर नॉर्थ कैम्पस!!”
“सो व्हाट?”
“मी टू… सी यू इन 20.”
अगले इक्कीसवें मिनट में सोहम और मोहा एक दूसरे की बाँहों में थे। वाइल्ड सेक्स के बाद दोनों ने ज्वाइंट पिया और फिर गुफ़्तगू का सिलसिला चल पड़ा। बातों-बातों में मोहा ने बताया कि वो लेडी श्रीराम कॉलेज में पढ़ती है और फ़िलहाल अपनी फ़्रेंड उल्फ़त के फ़्लैट में रह रही है। उल्फ़त—जो एसआरसीसी में पढ़ती है—से उसकी मुलाक़ात एक सेमिनार के दौरान पिछले बरस हुई थी। उल्फ़त ने ही कहा कि वो दो हफ़्तों के लिए अपने ब्यॉयफ़्रेंड के साथ सिक्किम घूमने जा रही है। अगर वो उल्फ़त के फ़्लैट में रहना चाहे तो रह सकती है। मोहा नॉर्थ कैम्पस में रहने का ये मौक़ा नहीं चूकना चाहती थी। दरअस्ल, उसकी ख़्वाहिश थी कि उसका एडमिशन नॉर्थ कैम्पस के ही किसी कॉलेज में हो, मगर नम्बर कम होने की वजह से ये ख़्वाहिश पूरी नहीं हो पाई। इसीलिए उसे जब कभी मौक़ा मिलता है, यहाँ आकर रहती है। उल्फ़त के अलावा भी उसने कई दोस्त बना रखे हैं जिसके साथ कैम्पस लाइफ़ एंज्वॉय की जाती है।
सोहम को ये बातें जानकर हैरानी नहीं हुई। वो जानता था कि नॉर्थ कैम्पस की लाइफ़ कितनी एक्साइटिंग है। तभी तो उसने भी नॉर्थ कैम्पस में एडमिशन लिया था। ये बात और है कि आज तक किसी को नहीं मालूम कि उसके एडमिशन की ख़ातिर उसके पापा ने पूरे तीन दिनों तक एक मिनिस्टर के ऑफ़िस का चक्कर लगाया था। इतना ही नहीं, साढ़े तीन लाख रुपए डोनेशन भी देना पड़ा था। सोहम के पापा सिर्फ़ इतना चाहते थे कि किसी तरह सोहम का करियर संवर जाए। अगरचे, पढ़ने में सोहम की दिलचस्पी कभी नहीं रही। वो हमेशा से एक पेंटर बनना चाहता था। उसके ज़ेहन की दीवारों पर तस्वीरों के सिवा कुछ न था। दुनिया के तमाम छोटे-बड़े पेंटर्स और उनकी मशहूर पेंटिंग्स की जानकारी उसके पास थी। उसे तस्वीरें जम्अ करने का भी शौक़ था। ये आदत उसकी माँ से आई थी। माँ ने उसके बचपन से लेकर स्कूल की पढ़ाई पूरी होने तक की एक एक तस्वीर सम्भाल कर रखी थी। जब वो स्कूल से निकला तो ख़ुद अपनी ज़िंदगी में शामिल हुए तमाम लोगों की तस्वीरें जम्अ करने लगा। उसे अचानक ख़याल आया कि क्यूँ न मोहा को अपने बचपन की तस्वीरें दिखाई जाएँ। उसने मोबाइल स्क्रीन पर एक फोल्डर ओपेन किया। कई तस्वीरों के बाद एक तस्वीर को ज़ूम करते हुए उसने कहा कि ये बहुत ख़ास है। हर तस्वीर एक नया दरवाज़ा खोल देती और सोहम उस दरवाज़े से किसी पुरानी दुनिया में दाख़िल हो जाता। कुछ पलों के लिए उसे जैसे याद ही नहीं रहता कि वो किसी के साथ है। तस्वीर-दर-तस्वीर उसे कोई कहानी याद हो आती और वो अपने भीतर उतरने लगता। अचानक उसने मोहा को एक नज़र देखा और आहिस्ते से कहा—
“हर तस्वीर एक कहानी की बुनियाद होती है।”
“क्या मुझसे पहले भी किसी लड़की को इसी तरह ये तस्वीरें दिखाई गई होंगी?”
तस्वीर देखते-देखते मोहा को एक मासूम सा ख़याल आया। इस तरह के ख़यालात अक्सर मासूम ही होते हैं। सोहम की नंगी छाती पर अपना सिर रखते हुए मोहा ने महसूस किया कि उसके मन की मिट्टी में याद का एक पौधा अब तक सूखा नहीं है। वक़्त-बेवक़्त उस पौधे पर फूल भी खिल आते हैं। उसने दिल ही दिल में एक शेर दोहराया—
एक तस्वीर बनाई है ख़यालों ने अभी
और तस्वीर से इक शख़्स निकल आया है
वो जब कभी ये शेर पढ़ती उसके सामने मोहसिन का शफ़्फ़ाफ़ चेहरा उभर आता। ये चेहरा दरअस्ल माज़ी की तरफ़ खुलने वाले दरवाज़े पर एक दस्तक थी। उसे बर्फ़ से ढँकी हुईं गुलमर्ग की पहाड़ियाँ और सेब के बाग़ात याद आने लगते। उसे लगता कि गुज़रा हुआ वक़्त फिर से उसके सामने मौजूद है। वो एक-एक लम्हा जीने लगती। ख़ास कर वो दिन चाहकर भी नहीं भुलाए जा सकते थे, जब उम्र की ऊँधती हुई डाली पर चटखते हुए तक़ाज़ों के फूल साँस ले रहे थे। आस पास बहती हुई दुआओं में नए रिश्तों की आहटें शामिल थीं।
उस दिन मोहा और मोहसिन बाबा रेशी की दरगाह से लौट रहे थे। सूरज की आख़िरी बूँद नदी में घुल रही थी। ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे किसी ख़ुशनुमा लम्हे का क़त्ल करने के बाद सारा लहू उफ़ुक़ पर पसार दिया गया हो। हर तरफ़ एक सहमा हुआ सफ़ेद सन्नाटा था। मोहसिन और मोहा नदी के किनारे-किनारे चल रहे थे। मोहा को महसूस हुआ कि नदी के दूसरे किनारे पर कोई परछाई साथ-साथ चल रही है। उसने जब नदी के दूसरे किनारे पर देखा, वहाँ कोई नहीं था मगर पानी की सतह पर एक अधमरी तितली बह रही थी, जो उड़ने की कोशिश करती और फिर धार के साथ बहने लगती। अचानक आवाज़ का एक टुकड़ा उसके कान पर आ कर गिरा। पीछे मुड़ी तो पाया कि देवदार के दरख़्तों के दर्मियान से एक आवाज़ आ रही है। नज़दीक जा कर देखा तो एक ज़ख़्मी परिंदा फड़फड़ा रहा था। उसने जब परिंदे को हथेलियों में उठाया तो पाया कि उसके पंख से लहू रिस रहा है। लहू की एक बूँद उंगलियों को सुर्ख़ करते हुए बर्फ़ पर गिर गई। मोहा ने कहा—
“परिंदे को घर ले चलते हैं!”
मोहसिन की मर्ज़ी भी यही थी। दोनों पहाड़ी पगडंडियों से गुज़रते हुए घर की तरफ़ बढ़ने लगे। रोशनी धीरे-धीरे अंधेरे की आगोश में सिमट रही थी। चलते-चलते नदी बहुत पीछे छूट चुकी थी और अब दूर तक सिर्फ़ सेब के बाग़ात नज़र आ रहे थे। अचानक बादल का एक नन्हा सा टुकड़ा बरसने लगा। घर न तो बहुत दूर था और न ही बहुत क़रीब। उन्होंने सोचा कि क्यूँ न बारिश के रुकने का इंतिज़ार किया जाए। दोनों एक सेब के घने दरख़्त के नीचे आ कर बैठ गए। मोहसिन ने एक सेब तोड़ा और पहले चख कर मीठे होने तस्दीक़ की, फिर मोहा की ओर बढ़ा दिया।
ये एक अजीब दिलकश मंज़र था। मोहा और मोहसिन आधे-अधूरे भीगते हुए एक ही सेब बारी-बारी से खा रहे थे। पानी की बूँदें उनके चेहरों को छूते ही रूह ताज़ा कर देती थीं। दिल-ओ-दिमाग़ के दर्मियान एक दीवार पैदा हो रही थी, जिसके दोनों तरफ़ कई अल्फ़ाज़ लिखे थे। हैरानी की बात तो ये थी कि उन तमाम अल्फ़ाज़ के मआनी एक ही लफ़्ज़—मोहब्बत—में सिमट आते थे। मोहा दरख़्त की ओट से बाहर आ गई और साँस-दर-साँस सुलगते हुए खुली बाँहों से बारिश का ख़ैर-मक़्दम करने लगी। उसके धड़कते हुए होंटों पर कई ख़्वाहिशें एक साथ मचलने लगीं। कुछ देर तक ये सब देखते हुए मोहसिन ने महसूस किया कि उसके होंटों की रेत पर एक घरौंदा बनता है और अपने आप बिखर जाता है। उसे भी भीगने की चाहत ने अपनी ज़द में समेट लिया। मोहसिन अब खुले आसमान के नीचे आ गया। उसने मोहा से कहा—
ये बारिश कब रुकेगी कौन जाने
कहीं मैं मर न जाऊँ तिश्नगी से
अपनी ज़ुल्फ़ों से परेशान मोहा ने मोहसिन को निगाह भर कर देखा और उसका हाथ अपने रुख़सार पर रख दिया। मोहसिन आहिस्ता-आहिस्ता उसकी लटों को सुलझाने लगा। इतने में, हवा का एक हल्का सा झोंका आया और दोनों के बदन सिहरन से लबालब हो गए। मोहब्बत ख़ुद इस बात की गवाह बनी कि दो बदन एक ही लय में गुनगुनाना चाहते हैं। दो रूहें एक ही धुन पर थिरकना चाहती हैं। ख़ुशी के रंग पपनियों के पोरों पर बिखर गए और किसी अंजान नगर का तसव्वुर करने लगे, जहाँ ज़िंदगी के दामन में कोई भी मरासिम मायूस नहीं होता। जहाँ नींद की शाख़ों पर ख़्वाब के फूल लगते ही चाँदनी ओस बनकर रक़्स करने लगती है। जहाँ उजालों का लम्स पाते ही तीरगी से भरी हुई तमाम तमन्नाओं की कोख ख़ुद पर नाज़ करती है।
उस शाम पहली दफ़ा उन्हें समझ आई कि गुफ़्तगू के लिए अल्फ़ाज़ का इस्तेमाल ज़रूरी नहीं है। जिस वक़्त दोनों घर पहुंचे, रोशनी पूरी तरह अंधेरे में जज़्ब हो चुकी थी। बारिश कब रुकी, इसका ध्यान किसी को नहीं रहा मगर उनकी पुलतियों पर अंजान नगर का नक़्शा मौजूद था। वो नक़्शा महज़ एक हफ़्ते में टूट कर बिखर गया जब एक दिन मोहा को पता चला कि मोहसिन लापता है। वो बाबा रेशी की दरगाह पर गई मगर वहाँ भी उदासी का एक आलम तारी था। कोई कहता कि मोहसिन दहशतगर्द बन गया। कोई कहता कि उसे दहशतगर्द क़रार दिया गया और फिर गोली मार दी। जितने मुँह उतनी कहानियाँ, मगर नब्बे की उम्र पार कर चुके तस्लीम चचा ने ख़बर दी कि कल सुबह चार लड़के क्रिकेट खेलकर मारुति कार में वापस आ रहे थे। वो जिस चौक से गुज़रे, आर्मी को इत्तिलाअ की गई थी कि वहाँ कुछ दहशतगर्द सरगर्मी होने वाली है। आर्मी ने उन लड़कों पर गोली चला दी। दो वहीं मारे गए, जबकि दो बुरी तरह घायल हो गए। तस्लीम चचा की बातों पर किसी ने ग़ौर नहीं फ़रमाया। सबको यही लगा कि उन्होंने फिर से कोई ख़्वाब देखा होगा। मौत के दिन क़रीब होने की वजह से वो कुछ भी बक रहे हैं। पूरी हक़ीक़त उस वक़्त ज़ाहिर हुई जब कुछ दिनों बाद इंडियन आर्मी के चीफ़ ने ख़ुद ये कहते हुए मुआफ़ी माँगी—
“हम इस हादसे के लिए शर्मिंदा हैं और आगे से ऐसा कभी नहीं होगा।”
जो लड़के मारे गए उनके परिवार को 10 लाख और जो घायल हुए उन्हें 5 लाख रुपए देने का एलान किया गया। बावजूद इसके लोगों के दिलों में इंडियन आर्मी अपने लिए मोहब्बत न जगा सकी। एक ग़ैर-मुल्की सहाफ़ी को इंटरव्यू देते हुए तस्लीम चचा ने कहा—
“आर्मी सिर्फ़ कश्मीर को महफ़ूज़ रखना चाहती है। कश्मीर के लोगों की उसे फ़िक्र ही नहीं।”
मोहसिन की मौत से उसके अब्बा-अम्मी को तकलीफ़ तो हुई ही थी मगर उसकी इकलौती बहन उल्फ़त को सबसे ज़ियादा दुख हुआ था। लम्बे वक़्त तक एक दूसरे का अश्क पोंछते-पोंछते मोहा और उल्फ़त कब और कैसे एक दूसरे की आदत बन गए, पता ही नहीं चला। अगरचे, उल्फ़त को ये बात बहुत पहले समझ आ गई थी कि जेंडर उसकी दिलचस्पी के सामने कोई दीवार नहीं है। उसे लड़का और लड़की दोनों अट्रैक्ट करते हैं। मोहा की ख़ुशी इस बात में थी कि वो उल्फ़त में मोहसिन का अक्स देखती है। अचानक मोहा को मोहसिन की ग़ैर-मौजूद मौजूदगी खलने लगी। उसे लगा कि उल्फ़त को कॉल कर लेना चाहिए। उसने सोहम की नंगी छाती से अपना सिर हटाते हुए कहा कि वो बाथरूम जाना चाहती है। उसने बाथरूम से ही उल्फ़त को कॉल किया मगर उल्फ़त का नम्बर कवरेज एरिया से बाहर था।
सोहम दूसरा ज्वाइंट बनाने में मसरूफ़ हो गया। उसे अचानक याद हो आया कि उसने पहली दफ़ा अर्पिता के साथ ज्वाइंट पिया था। अर्पिता उसके कॉलेज में अकेली बंगाली लड़की थी। दोनों की मुलाक़ात कॉलेज ही में होने वाली थिएटर वर्कशॉप में हुई। अर्पिता को अंग्रेज़ी में प्ले लिखना और बांग्ला में पोएम्स लिखना पसंद था। तीन दिनों की वर्कशॉप ख़त्म होने के बाद जो पहला प्ले हुआ, वो अर्पिता ने ही लिखा था और डायलॉग्स का हिंदी तरजुमा करने की ज़िम्मेदारी सोहम के हिस्से में आई। इसी दौरान अर्पिता के फ़्लैट पर उसका आना-जाना शुरू हुआ और रफ़्ता-रफ़्ता ये जान पहचान नई शक्ल लेने लगी।
एक रोज़ जब दिल्ली की हवा में हल्की ख़ुश्की थी, अर्पिता के मन का मौसम बदलने लगा। दिन में सर्दी की गुलाबी धूप बहुत अच्छी लग रही थी मगर शाम होते होते उसे तेज़ बुखार हो गया। उसने सोहम को कॉल कर के कहा कि वो दवा लेकर घर आ जाए। ये पहली दफ़ा था जब वो बीमार हुई थी। उसे अपने घर की बहुत याद आई। कोलकाता में उसकी बहुत बड़ी हवेली थी। घर में माँ-बाबा के सिवा कोई न था। माँ ने चाहा तो था कि अर्पिता उसे छोड़ कर कभी न जाए मगर वो इस हक़ीक़त से भी वाक़िफ़ थीं कि अर्पिता को अपनी ज़िंदगी का तजरबा ख़ुद हासिल करना होगा। बाबा चाहते हुए भी कभी नहीं समझा सके कि दिन में कई दफ़ा फोन पर बातचीत होने के बावजूद जी उदास रहता है। अर्पिता ने आज उदासी का स्वाद चखा था। उसने बिस्तर पर लेटे लेटे सोचा कि हम सबको उदासी का स्वाद ख़ुद ही चखना पड़ता है। ग़म और ख़ुशी के दर्मियान झूलती हुई उदासी कोई ऐसी शय नहीं जिससे छुटकारा पाया जा सकता है। ये एक ऐसी ख़ुशबू है जिसे भीतर ही भीतर जज़्ब करना होता है। इससे पहले कि सारी ख़ुशबुएँ जज़्ब हो पातीं, कॉलबेल बजी। दरवाज़े पर सोहम दवा के साथ हाज़िर था।
सोहम ने सबसे पहले उसे दवा खिलाई और उसके सिर पर पट्टी की। दवा ने अपना असर दिखाना शुरू किया। धीरे-धीरे उसे नींद आने लगी। अर्पिता रात भर सोती रही और सोहम उसे चाँद की तरह तकता रहा। एक वक़्त आया जब ज़ेहन के सारे सितारे ऊँघने लगे, चाँद को भी नींद आने लगी। अगली सुबह अर्पिता ने बतौर शुक्रिया सोहम को ज्वाइंट पिलाया। दो-तीन दफ़ा खाँसने के बाद उसे ये चीज़ रास आने लगी। अर्पिता ने कहा कि उसने ज़िंदगी में इससे बेहतर माल कभी नहीं फूँका। उसकी एक फ़्रेंड ईली ने उसे ये लाकर दिया था।
ईली का ख़याल आते ही सोहम मुस्कुरा उठा। मोहा अब खिड़की के पास खड़ी थी। सोहम ने उसकी तरफ़ ज्वाइंट बढ़ाया। तीसरा ज्वाइंट पीने के बाद दोनों फिर से बिस्तर में आ गए। सोहम ने स्मूच करते हुए कहा—
“अगर बुरा न मानो तो एक बात कहूँ?”
“हम्म्…”
“मुझे इस वक़्त ईली की बहुत याद आ रही है…”
“ईली…?”
“आई एक्सपीरिएंस्ड दि बेस्ट स्मूच विद हर!”
“कहीं ये तुम्हारी ईली मिरांडा हाउस में तो नहीं पढ़ती?”
—ये बात कहते हुए मोहा के चेहरे पर एक अजीब सी तिलिस्मी मुस्कान मौजूद थी।
“हाँ…पॉलिटिकल साइंस।”
“फ़क!! दिखाओ फोटो!!”
सोहम ने ईली की तस्वीर दिखाई।
“फ़क! फ़क!! फ़क!!!”
“…पर तुम कैसे जानती हो इसे?”
“ओह नो! शी वाज़ ‘माय’ फ़क बडी फ़ॉर अ मंथ एंड हाफ़…”
“एंड… लास्ट वीक ‘आई’ ब्रोकअप विद हर!”
दोनों एक साथ हँस पड़े। उन्हें एहसास हुआ कि नॉर्थ कैम्पस की दुनिया बड़ी होते हुए भी कितनी छोटी है। मोहा ने नहीं बताया कि उसे सोहम के साथ हमबिस्तर होने का ख़याल पहली दफ़ा तब आया था, जब ईली ने सोहम की टिंडर प्रोफ़ाइल दिखाई थी। सोहम ने भी ये बात छुपा ली कि वो उल्फ़त और ईली के साथ इसी कमरे में, इसी बिस्तर पर सो चुका है। उनकी हँसी की आवाज़ें कमरे में मौजूद हल्की रोशनी में घुलने लगीं। अधसोई उंगलियों के अधखिले होंट जाग उठे। बदन से बदन की ग़ुफ़्तगू होने लगी। अल्फ़ाज़ के तमाम मआनी अपाहिज हो कर हवा की सतह पर रेंगने लगे। मोहब्बत की एक महकती हुई धुन पूरी काएनात में रम गई।
