वरिष्ठ लेखक धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना की आत्मकथा ‘ज़िन्दगी का क्या किया’ पर बहुत अच्छी टिप्पणी पंकज कौरव ने की है. पंकज जी की लिखी यह पहली समीक्षा ही है. एक बात है बहुत दिनों बाद किसी लेखक की ऐसी आत्मकथा आई है समय गुजरने के साथ जिसके शैदाई बढ़ते जा रहे हैं- मॉडरेटर

मेरठ में जन्म, आगरा में प्रारंभिक शिक्षा, फिर देहरादून में कॉलेज की पढ़ाई…, य़ानी बचपन से छावनियों के शहरों में रहते आए धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना का अपना जीवन कब एक छावनी में तब्दील हो गया, यह उनकी आत्मकथा ‘ज़िन्दगी का क्या किया’ पढ़ते हुये पूरी तरह महसूस किया जा सकता है। इस आत्मकथा के विषय में सोचते ही ज्यां पाल सार्त्र की विश्वविख्यात आत्मकथात्मक कृति ‘शब्द’ (द वर्ड्स) से एक पंक्ति उद्धरित करना बेहद अनिवार्य हो जाता है- ‘देयर इज नो गुड फॉदर, देट्स द रूल’
पिता से उलझे हुये रिश्ते का यही त्रास धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना के जीवन और उनकी आत्मकथा का भी आधार बन गया सा लगता है। मर्म इतना गहरा है कि दूसरे-तीसरे पन्ने तक आते-आते बचपन और किशोरावस्था की स्मृतियों के बीच उन्होंने अनायास पिता को स्थापित कर दिया – ‘पिता के साथ मेरा रागात्मक रिश्ता कभी पनप ही नहीं पाया।’ इस स्वीकारोक्ति का कारण सिर्फ यह नहीं है कि उनके पिता ने आठवीं में पढ़ने वाले धीरेन्द्र को बाग में दसवीं की एक लड़की की गोद में सिर रखकर लेटे हुए रंगे हाथों पकड़ लिया था। इसलिये भी नहीं कि आपा खोकर सेंडल से वहीं उनकी धुनाई कर दी गई, बल्कि इसलिए कि ‘पिता’ शीर्षक से आयी चर्चित कहानी और इस आत्मकथा के बावजूद उनके भीतर कहीं गहरे में पिता से अपने रिश्तों को लेकर कोई बेचैनी अब भी बाकी है, जिसका विस्फोट उनके बचपन और किशोरावस्था पर केन्द्रित एक प्रथक आत्मकथात्मक कृति के रूप में कभी भी हो सकता है, इस बात की पूरी संभावना अब भी छूट गई है।
उसके अलावा कुछ भी नहीं छूटा, न एक भी मित्र, न ही संपर्क में आया कोई साहित्यकार या सहकर्मी। बीसवीं सदी के आखिरी दो दशकों सहित पिछले चालीस सालों में साहित्यजगत की लगभग सारी स्मृतियां, जिनके वे परोक्ष या अपरोक्ष रूप से गवाह बने, धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना ने अपनी इस आत्मकथा में समेट ली हैं। यहां शीला संधु के जमाने के राजकमल प्रकाशन और वहां पहली नौकरी से लेकर, राधाकृष्ण प्रकाशन होते हुए दिनमान और चौथी दुनिया तक के पचासों किस्से हैं। नौकरी के बीच लेखन की जद्दोजहद भी है और बड़े मोर्चों पर पत्रकारिता की बड़ी लड़ाईयां भी। दिनमान में संपादकीय सहकर्मी उदयप्रकाश का जिक्र है तो अक्षर प्रकाशन में राजेन्द्र यादव के साथ जमने वाली अड्डेबाजियों का जिक्र भी। सादतपुर के घर और अड़ोस-पड़ोस में रहने वाले लेखकों की स्मृतियां हैं, तो पड़ोसी के तौर पर बाबा नागार्जुन से जुड़े संस्मरण भी। नोएडा, मुंबई के मलाड और मीरारोड में होती आयी बैठकों का दौर है तो लोकल-ट्रेन की भागमभाग का सजीव चित्रण और निदा फाज़ली के साथ गुजारे लम्हों की याद भी। साहित्य की विजय यात्रा का जश्न है, तो गोरख पांडे की आत्महत्या पर मन में उठाने वाला क्षोभ भी यहां है। हाल ही में जेएनयू छात्र मुथु कृष्णन की आत्महत्या और सुर्खियों में रहे रोहित वेमुला खुदकुशी मामले के बाद गोरख पाण्डे का जिक्र बेहद जरूरी हो जाता है। धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना ने सन्निपात में डालने वाली उस त्रासद घटना का जिक्र भी किया है- “बातचीत के दौरान गोरख ने पूछा, ‘और कैसा चल रहा है?’ अपनी आदत के मुताबिक मैंने मज़ाक में उत्तर दिया, ‘एकदम बकवास और निर्रथक। कई बार तो लगता है सुसाइड कर लिया जाए।‘ गोरख अचकचा गए। संजीदा होकर बोले, ‘साथी जनता की तरफ खड़े लेखकों को यह शब्द अपनी जुबान पर लाने का भी हक नहीं है…’ अपने मज़ाकिया संवाद के उत्तर में इतना संजीदा भाषण सुनकर सुन्न होने की अब मेरी बारी थी। आत्महत्या को जो गोरख कायरतापूर्ण मानते थे, वही गोरख खुद आत्महत्या कर चुके थे। इस पर मैं ही नहीं कोई भी कैसे यकीन कर सकता था? पर सच यही था। एक लड़ते हुए कवि ने आत्महत्या की। क्या यह एक ऐसी आत्महत्या नहीं जिससे हत्या की बू आ रही है…?”
धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना की 1975 में प्रकाशित पहली कहानी ‘लोग/हाशिये पर’ से लेकर इस आत्मकथा तक की यात्रा में उनके परिचित, अपरिचित, मित्र- शुभचिंतक और उनके संपर्क में आते रहे देशभर के सैकड़ों साहित्यकारों की स्मृतियां मानों शब्दों में साकार हो सामने आ गई हैं। बगैर ज्यादा लाग लपेट धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना सबका जिक्र करते गए। चौथी दुनिया बंद होने के बाद बेरोज़गारी के दिनों के कुछ रोचक प्रसंग उन्होंने बड़ी बेबाकी से बयां किए हैं- ‘विधिवत बेरोजगारी का दूसरा महीना चल रहा था। शामें कनॉट प्लेस में अपने क्रांतिकारी कवि दोस्त बृजमोहन की जेरोक्स की दुकान पर बीत रहीं थीं। देर रात को वहां अपने घोषित अद्धे और अघोषित पव्वे के साथ कुबेरदत्त चला आता था, जिस कारण अर्धभुखमरी के दिनों में भी शराबखोरी की लत चल रही थी।‘
छोटे शहरों से पलायन करने के बाद एक निम्न मध्यमवर्गीय व्यक्ति का जीवन कैसी त्रासदी से होकर गुज़र सकता है, यह जानने की चाहत हो तो धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना की आत्मकथा जरूर ही पढ़ी जानी चाहिए। सत्तर और अस्सी के दशक में जब गांवों, कस्बों और छोटे शहरों से महानगरों की ओर आने वालों की तादात अपेक्षाकृत कम थी, तब की चुनौतियां कहीं से भी कमतर नहीं थीं। उन्हीं दिनों में एक मध्यवर्गीय लेखक का एक के बाद एक दो-दो महानगरों की ओर कूच करना और रोजगार की चुनौती के बीच अपने भीतर के लेखक को बचाए रख पाना कितना कठिन है, यह उनकी इस आत्मकथा में बखूबी दर्ज हुआ है।
कहते हैं जिन्दगी दूसरा मौका आसानी से नहीं देती। धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना ने अपनी जीवटता के दम पर रोजगार के आश्रय के लिये दिल्ली और फिर मुंबई दोनों महानगरों से दो-दो मौके हथियाए। लेकिन जिन्दगी भी अपनी जिद पर कायम रही। दूसरा मौका दिया जरूर पर फीका ही साबित हुआ। दिल्ली की यात्रा में जहां राजकमल से शुरू हुआ उनका सफर दिनमान होते हुए ‘चौथी दुनिया’ की कामयाबी के साथ ऊंचाईयां छूता गया वहीं जागरण समूह में दूसरी पारी अपेक्षाकृत कम असरदार रही। बड़ी साफगोई से उन्होंने इसे स्वीकारा है। मुंबई में उनकी पत्रकारिता की पहली पारी के साथ भी यही हुआ। जनसत्ता के साहित्यिक परिशिष्ट ‘सबरंग’ की जबरदस्त कामयाबी ने धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना को एक ऐसे चहेते संपादक के रूप में स्थापित किया जिसने हिन्दी के पाठकों को समकालीन रचनाकारों और साहित्य जगत की हलचल से रूबरू करवाया। लेकिन जब वे दिल्ली में जागरण समूह की नौकरी से मुक्त होकर ‘सहारा समय’ ज्वाईन करने वापस मुंबई आए तो पिछली पारी से कोई बढ़त नहीं मिली…।
धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना की आत्मकथा में ‘सबरंग’ के दिनों का भव्य ब्यौरा पढ़ने के बाद किसी के लिये भी उनपर आत्ममुग्धता का आरोप मढ़ना आसान होगा। लेकिन टाइम्स समूह की पत्रिका “धर्मयुग” की ख्याति के बाद यह पहला मौका था जब जनसत्ता ने ‘सबरंग’ शुरू किया। धर्मयुग की तर्ज पर देशभर के हिन्दी लेखकों की साहित्यिक रचनाएं मंगाने और प्रकाशित करने का जिम्मा मिला धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना को। वो भी देश की उसी आर्थिक राजधानी मुंबई में जहां स्थानीय पार्टियों के मराठी अस्मिता के नारों की गूंज कभी खत्म नहीं होती। ‘सबरंग’ की कामयाबी धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना के पत्रकारिता करियर का स्वर्णिम काल रही है इसलिये वे उसके भव्य वर्णन की छूट के हकदार तो वैसे भी हैं। आलोक भट्टाचार्य ने धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना पर एक संस्मरण के बहाने लिखा भी है-
“हिन्दी की साहित्यिक पत्रकारिता का इतिहास जब भी लिखा जाएगा, दो खास अध्यायों के बिना वह पूर्ण नहीं हो सकेगा। पहला धर्मवीर भारती का ‘धर्मयुग’ अध्याय और दूसरा धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना का ‘सबरंग’ अध्याय।“
हर कामयाब पुरूष के पीछे एक स्त्री का हाथ होता है, धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना के जीवन में कामयाबी की ओर ले जाने वाली वह स्त्री उनकी पत्नि ललिता अस्थाना साबित हुईं। वे एक रोज़ अनदेखे-अनजाने धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना के लिये मुंबई में अपना घर-द्वार छोड़कर देहरादून चलीं आईं। उनकी इस आत्मकथा में ललिता बिष्ट से प्रेम और उनके साथ बेहद अप्रत्याशित ढंग से शुरू हुए दामपत्य जीवन का पूरा विवरण है। कि कैसे ललिता के आते ही धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना की जिन्दगी ने फांकाकशी और यायावरी की राह छोड़ दिल्ली का रूख कर लिया। अपनी संघर्षयात्रा याद करते हुये धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना लिखते हैं- “आज यह स्वीकारने में मुझे ज़रा भी संकोच नहीं है कि धूल, धूप, वर्षा, अभाव, यातना, वंचना, अपमान, प्रलोभन और हताशा के बीचोंबीच खड़े रहकर भी मैं अपनी अस्मिता, इयत्ता, स्वाभिमान और लेखकीय तकाज़ों को जीवित रख सका तो सिर्फ इसलिए कि ललिता जैसी आज़ाद ख्याल, स्वाभिमानी, स्त्री के अधिकारों के लिए सतत चौकस, लेकिन सहृदय, सहिष्णु और सहनशील ललिता बतौर हमसफर मुझे मिली हुई थी।“
कुलमिलाकर धीरेन्द्र अस्थाना जैसे यारबाश लेखक की यादों का गुल्लक टूटते ही सैकड़ों किस्से निकल पड़े हैं, जिन्हें पढ़ते हुए पाठक कहीं न कहीं हिन्दी साहित्यजगत की पिछले 40 साल की यात्रा के साक्षी भी ज़रूर बनगें।
