पासवान को ऐसा नेता माना गया जो सभी वर्गों और समुदायों में समान रूप से लोकप्रिय थे और जिन्होंने अपने सभी कार्यकाल में ऐसे जनहितकारी फैसले किए जिससे उन्हें ‘विकास पुरुष’ के तौर पर जाना गया। अपने पाँच दशकों से भी ज़्यादा के राजनीतिक जीवन में पासवान ने कई अहम पदों की ज़िम्मेवारियाँ संभाली जिसमें रेलवे, संचार और सूचना तकनीक और केमिकल और फर्टिलाइज़र जैसे मंत्रालयों की जिम्मेवारियाँ भी शामिल थीं। अपनी मृत्यु से ठीक पहले वह मौजूदा केंद्र सरकार में खाद्य, सार्वजनिक वितरण और उपभोक्ता मामलों के मंत्री थे।
पासवान को लंबे समय से जानने वाले इस पुस्तक के लेखक और पत्रकार प्रदीप श्रीवास्तव कहते हैं कि उन्हें इस बात का गहरा दुख है कि पासवान इस पुस्तक को प्रकाशित होते हुए नहीं देख पाए, हालाँकि उन्होंने निधन के तीन महीने पहले इस पुस्तक की की मुद्रित पांडुलिपि शुरू से अंत तक पढ़ी थी और उन्होंने संतोष जाहिर करने के साथ इसकी तारीफ भी की थी। प्रदीप श्रीवास्तव कहते हैं, ‘यह पुस्तक पासवान जी के जीवन के चार पहलुओं को समेटती है। पहला, बिहार के एक अति पिछड़े गांव शहरबन्नी से शुरू हुआ उनका बचपन, पढ़ाई-लिखाई, और फिर उनका पारिवारिक जीवन । दूसरा, राजनीति में उनके प्रवेश से लेकर अभी तक की राजनीतिक यात्रा; तीसरा, समाजिक न्याय के लिए उनके द्वारा किया गया अनवरत संघर्ष और चौथा, उनकी प्रशासनिक क्षमता, प्रशासनिक फैसले और केंद्रीय मंत्री के तौर पर किए गए उनके कार्य’। उन्होंने आगे कहा, ‘इस किताब को लिखने के क्रम में मेरी छह साल में कई बार पासवान जी से बातचीत हुई, मैंने पासवान जी से जुड़े अनगिनत लोगों से साक्षात्कार किया, इनमें उनके राजनीतिक सहयोगियों, मंत्रालय में उनके साथ काम किए अधिकारियों के साथ उनके परिवार के लोग भी शामिल हैं।’।
पासवान की इस जीवनी पर बात करते हुए पेंगुइन रैंडम हाउस की पब्लिशर, इंडियन लैंग्वेजेज वैशाली माथुर कहती हैं, ‘मैं इस किताब के संपादन के समय इसके ब्यौरों और इसकी किस्सागोई में एक तरह से डूब गई थी, क्योंकि पासवानजी के बारे में अभी तक बहुत कम जानकारी उपलब्ध थी। वे दलित समुदाय के सबसे महत्वपूण नेताओं में से एक थे और केंद्र में बिहार का अहम चेहरा थे। रामविलास पासवान जी की यह प्रामाणिक जीवनी उनके जीवन के सभी पक्षों पर प्रकाश डालती है’।
