…और अब पंडित अभय नारायण मल्लिक भी नहीं रहे! यही जनवरी का महीना था, जिसकी 11वीं तारीख़ को सन् 1990 में पंडित अभय जी के पितृतुल्य काका पंडित रामचतुर मल्लिक दिवंगत हुए थे! ध्रुवपद (ध्रुपद) की अपनी ख़ास शैली के लिए मशहूर दरभंगा के ‘अमता’ घराने से संबद्ध पंडित अभय नारायण मल्लिक वह आख़िरी कड़ी थे, जिन्होंने अपने अग्रज रामचतुर मल्लिक के चरणों में बैठकर न सिर्फ ध्रुपद, ठुमरी और विद्यापति-गान की बारीकियाँ सीखीं, बल्कि मिथिला की वह ख़ास तहज़ीब भी, जिसे उन्हीं के परिवार के लोग अब तकरीबन भूल चुके हैं! दरभंगा घराने के ध्रुपद गायकों की यह परंपरा थी कि ध्रुपद की प्रस्तुति के बाद वह प्रचलित लोकधुन से अलग शास्त्रीयता में ढालकर विद्यापति के पदों को गाते थे. लेकिन इस घराने के नई पीढ़ी के गायक शायद यह तहज़ीब भूल चुके हैं, इसलिए कोई पुराने क़द्रदान जब उनसे इस तरह की फरमाइश करते हैं, तो बजाए गाने के वह बगलें झाँकने लगते हैं. लेकिन पंडित राचचतुर मल्लिक से ध्रुपद गायन में दीक्षित पंडित अभय नारायण मल्लिक में अमता घराने की यह विशिष्ट परंपरा जीवन भर बनी रही, जो ‘उगना रे मोर कतय गेलह’ और ‘जय जय भैरवि असुर भयाऊनि’-जैसे मैथिल-कोकिल विद्यापति ठक्कुर के अतिचर्चित पदों को गाकर उपस्थित श्रोताओं को राग-रस में सराबोर कर देते थे! मल्लिक अभय नारायण जी के निधन से शाब्दिक ही नहीं, वास्तव में यह अपूरणीय क्षति हुई कि अमता घराने के वर्तमान गायकों में ध्रुवपद के नोम-तोम की उपस्थिति तो दिखती है, लेकिन मैथिल संस्कृति की वह मिठास और विद्यापति की रचनात्मक गंध सिरे से ग़ायब है, जिसकी वज़ह से अमता घराना पूरे भारत में पिछले तीन सौ वर्षों में अपनी विशिष्टता को कायम रख सका!
ध्रुपद के ख़ानदानी गायकों के परिवार में 19 अप्रैल, 1937 को पैदा हुए अभय नारायण जी ऐसे गायक थे, जिन्होंने ध्रुपद की पवित्रता को ज़रा भी कम किये बिना उसकी पवित्रता और दिव्यता के मूल रूप को जीवित रखा. दरअसल वह उस परंपरा के प्रतिनिधि थे, जो साढ़े तीन सौ साल से अधिक पुरानी है. अमता घराने के ध्रुपद की परंपरा प्रत्यक्ष रूप से सेनिया परंपरा के तहत स्वामी हरिदास और बादशाह अकबर के नवरत्न मियाँ तानसेन के गायन की परंपरा से जुड़ती है. यह बताने की शायद जरूरत नहीं है कि ध्रुपद हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत की जड़ में है. ध्रुपद का विकास और प्रसार भले मुग़ल दरबारों में हुआ, लेकिन राज दरभंगा के संरक्षण में मल्लिक परिवार के गायकों ने जिस शैली में इस गायन शैली को विकसित किया, उसे सुनने के बाद ही किसी को यह पता चल सकता है कि मनोरंजन से परे ध्रुपद इतना शुद्ध और दिव्य आख़िर क्योंकर है? अभय नारायण जी तेरह साल की उम्र जब किशोरावस्था की ओर बढ़ रहे थे, तभी उनके चाचा रामचतुर मल्लिक के देख-रेख में उनकी संगीत की तालीम शुरू हुई. राज दरभंगा के शाही दरबार में बड़े गायकों और रसिकजनों के बीच ध्रुपद, ख़याल, ठुमरी और विद्यापति के गीतों की जिस मधुरता को उन्होंने अपने भीतर आत्मसात किया, वह उनके बाद की पीढ़ी की नसीब नहीं हो सकी. अमता घराने के ध्रुपद के वह एकमात्र ऐसे गायक थे, जो तानसेन की कम-से-कम एक दर्जन मूल रचनाओं को पेश कर सकते थे. अगर पंडित जी की आवाज़ में ये चीज़ें रिकॉर्डेड हों और सुरक्षित हों, तो वह हमारे लिए एक बड़ी सांस्कृतिक निधि है. उसे हर हाल में संरक्षित किया जाना चाहिए.
सवाल यह है कि आख़िर क्या वज़ह रही कि दरभंगा के ‘अमता’ घराने को हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत के ध्रुपद में इतने विराट् योगदान के बाद भी वह पहचान हासिल नहीं हुई, जिसका वह हक़दार था? दरअसल भारत को स्वतंत्रता मिलने के बाद जब राज दरभंगा का पतन होना शुरू हुआ, तो वहाँ के अंतिम ज़मींदार सर कामेश्वर सिंह स्वतंत्र भारत की राजनीति में सफल नहीं हो सके और तमाम साजिशों का शिकार होकर सन् 1962 में अचानक गुज़र गए. उसके बाद उनके दरबारी गायक पंडित रामचतुर मल्लिक संरक्षकविहीन हो गए. सन् 1924 में राज दरभंगा के तत्कालीन ज़मींदार रामेश्वर सिंह ने रामचतुर मल्लिक को अपना दरबारी गायक बनाया था. वह सेनिया परंपरा और गौड़वाणी के एक प्रतिनिधि गायक तो थे ही, इसके साथ-साथ उन्हें ठुमरी गायन की गया और बनारस दोनों शैली के गायन में महारत हासिल थी. रामचतुर जी के बाद इस घराने में सबसे प्रतिभाशाली गायक उनके छोटे भाई पंडित विदुर मल्लिक थे, जो दरभंगा छोड़कर वृंदावन चले गए. विदुर मल्लिक की दरभंगा से विदाई दरअसल अमता घराने के सबसे प्रतिभाशाली गायक की विदाई साबित हुई. उनके साथ एक अन्याय यह भी हुआ कि उनके ज्येष्ठ भ्राता ने जिस तरह भतीजे अभय नारायण मल्लिक को आगे बढ़ाया, उसका शतांश प्रयास भी अपने अनुज को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए नहीं किया. इसके बावज़ूद विदुर मल्लिक मिथिला की मिट्टी और संस्कृति से कभी मानसिक तौर पर अलग नहीं हुए. अपने गायन में स्थानीय विशिष्टता के गंध को बचाए रहे. विदुर जी के पलायन के बाद पंडित अभय नारायण मल्लिक ने भी अंततः दरभंगा छोड़ दिया और खैरागढ़ चले गए. जहाँ इंदिरा कला संगीत विश्वविद्यालय में संगीत के प्रोफेसर और डीन के पद से सन् 1998 में रिटायर हुए.
पलायन का क्रम यहीं नही रुका. विदुर मल्लिक के पुत्र प्रेमकुमार मल्लिक इलाहाबाद (अब प्रयागराज) में बस गए. आज प्रेमकुमार मल्लिक के बच्चे प्रशांत, निशांत और प्रियंका गायन के ख़ानदानी रवायत को आगे बढ़ा रहे हैं. जबकि रामकुमार मल्लिक के बच्चे साहित्य मल्लिक, संगीत मल्लिक और पुत्री रूबी मल्लिक गायन के क्षेत्र में अच्छा-ख़ासा नाम और नामा कमा रहे हैं. वहीं अमता घराने से अलग दरभंगा राज के दूसरे चर्चित गायक पंडित सियाराम तिवारी की सात पुत्रियाँ थीं और किसी की भी संगीत में रुचि न होने के कारण सभी पुत्रियाँ संगीत से दूर ही रहीं, बावज़ूद इसके कि उनके पिता राज दरभंगा के बेहद सम्मानित गायक थे और भारत सरकार द्वारा पद्मश्री से सम्मानित थे. इस सबका नतीज़ा यह हुआ कि राज दरभंगा की समाप्ति के साथ-साथ उनके दरबार से जुड़ी तमाम कलाएँ भी धीरे-धीरे लुप्त होती चली गईं. आज भारत के अन्य हिस्सों की बात तो छोड़िये, दरभंगा क्षेत्र के लोगों को भी अमता घराने के बड़े गायकों, मसलन, कर्ताराम मल्लिक, निहाल मल्लिक, रंजीतराम मल्लिक, गुरुसेवक मल्लिक, कनक मल्लिक, फकीरचंद मल्लिक और भीम मल्लिक का नाम बमुश्किल मालूम होगा. उनके गायन की विशिष्टता के बारे में लोगों से कुछ भी जानने की तो अपेक्षा भी नहीं करनी चाहिए.
मुझे आज भी याद है जब अभय नारायण जी के 79वें जन्मदिन पर उनके शिष्यों ने दिल्ली स्थित इंडिया हैवीटैट सेंटर के अमलतास सभागार में एक ध्रुपद उत्सव का आयोजन किया था. अमता घराने की ध्रुपद गायकी पर केंद्रित इस समारोह में उनके अनेक शिष्यों ने अपनी प्रस्तुति दी, उसके बाद उनके बेटे और शिष्य संजय कुमार मल्लिक ने राग बिहाग में अमता घराने की बानगी पेश की थी. उनके आलाप में वीर रस के ध्रुपद ‘राजा रामचंद्र चढ्यो हैं त्रिकूट पर…’ का असर दिखाई दे रहा था. वहीं संगीत कुमार पाठक ने पखावज पर दुगुन, तिगुन, चौगुन आदि की लयकारी से ध्रुपद को अलौकिक बना दिया था. जब स्वयं पंडित अभय कुमार मल्लिक मंच पर आये तो उनके साथ संजय मल्लिक भी बैठे और तानपुरे को संभाला था सुमित और अजय पाठक ने. पखावज पर संगीत पाठक और हारमोनियम पर मोहम्मद रऊफ संगत कर रहे थे. हालाँकि ध्रुपद में हारमोनियम को देखकर मुझे थोड़ा अचरज हुआ था, लेकिन मैंने अपनी कोई राय तब व्यक्त नहीं की थी. पंडित जी ने राग बिहाग में औचारमयी आलाप के बाद धमार गान शुरू किया, ‘आए कहाँ ते हो गोपाल, गाल लगाए गुलाल. अंजन अधर पीक पलकन पर’, गाते-गाते वहाँ उपस्थित अपने शिष्यों को समझाया था कि बंदिश में खंडिता नायिका का वर्णन है, जो नायक के गालों पर गुलाल, होठों पर किसी और स्त्री की आँखों का अंजन और पलकों में उसके पान की पीक देखकर सवाल करती है, ‘आए कहां ते गोपाल’? इस बंदिश को पेश करते समय रस-भाव का भी ध्यान रहना चाहिए. इन बारीकियों को समझाते हुए अभय नारायण जी ने अपने शिष्यों के साथ-साथ श्रोताओं को भी ध्रुपद के रस से परिचित कराया था. अपने प्रभावी गायन का समापन उन्होंने राग मालकौंस में सूलताल की एक ध्रुपद बंदिश से किया, जिसकी अनुगूँज आज भी मेरे कानों में उसी तरह सुरक्षित है!
दरभंगा घराने की उत्पत्ति सेनिया घराने के दरबारी गायक तानसेन के उत्तराधिकारी सदारंग (नेमत खां) के पुत्र भूपत खां (महारंग) से दरभंगा घराने के प्रवर्तक पंडित राधाकृष्ण एवं कर्ताराम मलिक के द्वारा होना बताया जाता है. जिनका संबंध दरअसल राजस्थान से था और वे ब्राह्मण कुल के थे. पंडित राधाकृष्ण और कर्ताराम ने अपने कठिन साधना से छह रागों पर सिद्धि प्राप्त की, जिसके फलस्वरूप इन रागों पर इनका अधिकार हो गया. उन छह रागों के नाम हैं-भैरव, मालकौंस, दीपक, मेघ-मल्हार, श्री और राग हिंडोल. इन दोनों भाइयों के गायन से प्रभावित होकर राज दरभंगा के तत्कालीन शासक माधव सिंह ने उन्हें राज गायक के रूप में नियुक्त कर लिया और अमता गाँव सहित तीन मौजा में स्थित 1100 सौ एकड़ जमीन बतौर जागीर दे दी. यह अमता गाँव वर्तमान बहेड़ी प्रखंड के नारायण दोहट पंचायत के अंतर्गत आता है. बाद की पीढ़ियों में अमता घराने में एक से एक धुरंधर गायक हुए, जिनमें पंडित क्षितिपाल मल्लिक और पंडित राजितराम मल्लिक हुए. उनके दो शिष्य पंडित सुखदेव मल्लिक और रामचतुर मल्लिक ने अपनी साधना एवं योग्यता से इस घराने को मजबूत पहचान दिलायी. इन्हीं पंडित सुखदेव मल्लिक योग्य पुत्र थे पंडित विदुर मल्लिक, जो आगे चलकर ख्यातिलब्ध हुए. आज कुछ लोग अमता घराने को अज्ञानतावश दरभंगा घराना भी कहते हैं, जो कि ग़लत है. क्योंकि शास्त्रीय संगीत में घराने हमेशा एक स्थान के नाम पर होते हैं, न कि किसी व्यक्ति या उसके आश्रयदाता के मुख्यालय के नाम पर. इस घराने के गायक आज चाहे जहाँ भी चले जाएँ, वे जाने जाएँगे अंततः अमता घराने के गायक के तौर पर ही-जैसे किराना घराना के गायक आज भले सबसे अधिक महाराष्ट्र और कर्नाटक में हैं, लेकिन वे जाने जाते हैं किराना घराने के गायक के तौर पर ही. पंडित अभय नारायण मल्लिक खैरागढ़ के बाद नोएडा में भी रहे, लेकिन वह जहाँ भी रहे, उनकी पहचान अमता घराने के ध्रुपद से थी. ध्रुपद की उस विशिष्ट शैली से, जिससे आज शास्त्रीय संगीत के साधक ही नहीं, रसिकजन भी धीरे-धीरे मुँह मोड़ते जा रहे हैं, ठीक उसी तरह जैसे अभय नारायण मल्लिक की तरह एक-एक करके ध्रुपद के वीरों से यह मही विहीन होती जा रही है -पहले से कुछ अधिक ग़रीब, कुछ अधिक शास्त्र और संस्कृतिविहीन!
