मेरे जीवन का एक नया अध्याय था – दक्षिण कोरिया में हिन्दी अध्यापन!
अनेक विदेशी भाषाओं के केंद्र, हांकुक विश्वविद्यालय में हिन्दी अध्यापन के पचास वर्ष पूरे होने को हैं. यहां अन्य मुख्य विषयों के साथ विद्यार्थी हिन्दी का चयन भी करते. विश्वविद्यालय के दो परिसरों में सौ से भी अधिक विद्यार्थी हिंदी पढ़ रहे थे. बुसान विश्वविद्यालय और सिओल नेशनल यूनिवर्सिटी में भी हिन्दी भाषा और भारतीय इतिहास तथा संस्कृति की कक्षाएं थी.
हांकुक विश्वविद्यालय संक्षेप में HUFS कहलाता. हिन्दी विभाग में लगभग सभी अध्यापक भारत में अध्ययन के लिए आए, ऐसा ज्ञात हुआ. केन्द्रीय हिन्दी संस्थान, जवाहर लाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय और दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय की स्मृतियां सभी के मन में थी. अध्यापन का स्तर उच्च था, अध्यापकों द्वारा तैयार की गई हिन्दी-कोरियाई पाठ्यपुस्तकें विश्वविद्यालय ने सुरुचि से छापी थी. अकादमिक छमाही गोष्ठी नियम से होती, जिनमें देश के अन्य विश्वविद्यालयों के हिन्दी अथवा भारत अध्ययन विभाग के अध्यापक वर्ग की सहभागिता रहती. आलेख पाठ के बाद सार्थक प्रश्नोत्तर सेशन रहता. सभी विभागीय सहयोगी अत्यंत गंभीर किन्तु हर काम में बहुत ही सहायक रहे. एक नए देश में, जहां भाषा भी हम पूरी तरह नहीं समझते थे, विशुद्ध शाकाहारी होने के नाते भोजन भी एक उलझन पैदा कर सकता था, किन्तु इतना सद्भाव और स्नेह का वातावरण था कि जीवन सुखद-सरल बन गया.
वरिष्ठ प्रोफ़ेसर वू जो किम, प्रोफ़ेसर लिम गन दोंग, प्रोफ़ेसर किम छान्ग्वान और प्रोफ़ेसर उन गु ली के साथ युवा किम भी मेरी सहयोगी बनी जो दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय से एम ए पीएचडी थी और बहुत ही संकोची स्वभाव की थी.
मेरे साथ-साथ हिन्दी पढ़ाने को पोलैंड से इवानेक का चयन भी हुआ था. युवा इवानेक दो छोटे बच्चों और पत्नी सहित विश्वविद्यालय द्वारा दिए गए पारिवारिक आवास में परिसर से कुछ दूर रहते थे. कितना रोचक था – एक पोलिश युवा कोरिया में हिन्दी पढ़ाने आए. वे उत्साही नौजवान थे, उनका शोध कार्य भारतीय स्कूली शिक्षा पद्धति से जुड़ा था और वे घने आत्मविश्वास से अपनी बात कहते थे.
विभाग उच्च स्तरीय शोध पत्रिका का प्रकाशन भी करता था जिसमें peer reviewd आलेख ही स्थान पाते और उसके लिए मानदेय भी दिया जाता. विश्वविद्यालय फैकल्टी को दूर दराज कांफ्रेंस में जाने को प्रोत्साहित भी करता और आर्थिक सहयोग भी प्रदान करता था.
कोरिया में हिन्दी पढ़ने का अर्थ यह था कि हिन्दी सीख लेने के बाद विद्यार्थी सांस्कृतिक केन्द्रों, दूतावासों, बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियों, कोरियन बैंकों और पर्यटन केन्द्रों में नौकरी पा सकते थे. पास्को, सैमसंग, ह्यूंदै और एलजी जैसी कम्पनियां भारत भेजे जाने वाले अपने अधिकारी में हिन्दी और भारत की समझ को प्राथमिकता दे रही थीं. वे चयनित व्यक्ति को हिन्दी सीख कर जाने के लिए प्रेरित भी करती. इसलिए विभाग में हिन्दी भाषा के ‘फ़ॉरन लैंग्वेज़ ऐफ़िशिएन्सी टेस्ट’ की योजना भी थी. एक समय मुझे दो ऐसी तिमाही कक्षाएं भी पढ़ाने को मिली जो बैंकिंग शब्दावली और सामान्यत: भारतीय जीवनपद्धति की जानकारी और वार्तालाप को सिखाने के लिए थी.
भारतीय अध्ययन संस्थान और एरिया स्टडीज़ विभाग में ग्रेजुएट स्तर (एम ए के समकक्ष) पर हिन्दी विषय लेने वाले छात्र पर्याप्त थे. यह अध्ययन हिन्दी भाषा के अतिरिक्त, भारतीय इतिहास, समाज, संस्कृति, अर्थ व्यवस्था, परम्परा, मूल्यों और मान्यताओं को जानने के लिए भी था. इन्हीं कक्षाओं के विद्यार्थी भारत में प्रेम, स्त्री, परिवार और बच्चों के विषय में बहुत सी जिज्ञासा लिए रहते.
सभी कक्षाएं बहुत अनुशासित थी. बुद्ध और कनफ्यूसियस के देश में युवा पीढ़ी विनम्रता और आदर भाव का एक आदर्श उदाहरण थी. तीसरे वर्ष की एक कक्षा के विद्यार्थियों से अनौपचारिकता इसलिए विकसित हो सकी कि हम निबंधों की उस दुनिया में विचर रहे थे, जहां एक चयनित विषय पर विद्यार्थी को लिखित और मौखिक प्रस्तुति देनी होती. इस कक्षा में उनके देश और निजी जीवन को जानने का कुछ अवसर मिला और इस क्रम में वे खुल कर बात कहने लगे. कुछ विद्यार्थी तो भारत आए हुए थे और कुछ भारत आने को अत्यधिक उत्सुक थे. वाराणसी उनके पहली पसंद का शहर था.
मैंने देखा कि विद्यार्थियों में किम, पार्क, ली, लिम और शिन – इन्हीं पारिवारिक नामों का बोलबाला है. किन्तु इनके पूरे नाम का उच्चारण पहले-पहल कठिन मालूम हुआ – एक छात्रा का नाम था– पार्क यून्ग्योंग और छात्र का नाम लिम ह्युन्तैक !
पूरे देश में सभी संवादों का माध्यम कोरियन भाषा ही थी. अंग्रेज़ी का प्रयोग किसी अन्य की ज़रुरत होने पर ही किया जाता. लेकिन देश में आने वाले विदेशी परेशानी में न पड़ें इसलिए टैक्सी में ‘इंटरर्प्रेटेशन’ की सुविधा मिली. लगभग तीन महीने बाद हमारे लिए भी भाषा की लय सुपरिचित हो गई . धन्यवाद – खाम्सा हमनिदा और नमस्कार – अन्योंग हासेयो – जैसे शब्द उन्हीं की तरह हम भी बोलने लगे. विश्वविद्यालय ने शाम के समय अध्यापकों को कोरियन भाषा सीखने की सुविधा भी प्रदान की थी, उन रोचक कक्षाओं की स्मृति कभी विस्मृत नहीं हो सकती !
विश्वविद्यालय परिसर में सभी कक्षाओं में इंटरनेट के कनेक्शन सहित कम्प्युटर, माइक और प्रोजेक्टर थे – बटन दबाते ही सब उपलब्ध. इसलिए कभी कोई हिन्दी गीत, कभी किसी फिल्म के माध्यम से हिन्दी पढ़ाने और भारत का परिचय देने का आनंद ही कुछ और हो जाता. एक और अनेक की अवधारणा को मैंने – ‘हिंद देश के निवासी हम सभी जन एक हैं’ – गीत के माध्यम से स्पष्ट किया. एक तितली अनेक तितलियां – जैसी पंक्तियों के आने पर एक वचन और बहुवचन भी समझा दिया ! बी बी सी हिन्दी से कई चित्रमय समाचार मास्टर्स के छात्रों के साथ पढ़े.
यहाँ प्रेम की स्वच्छंदता बहुत व्याप्त नहीं दिखी – युवा समूह में मुक्त भाव से हंसते दिखाई देते. विश्वविद्यालय के गलियारों में कॉफ़ी और कोल्ड ड्रिंक की मशीनों की व्यस्तता को देख कर मैं सोचती कि दिनभर इनकी कितनी खपत होती है यहाँ ! युवा वर्ग में खेलों के प्रति दिलचस्पी और जीने का प्रबल उत्साह दिखा. विश्वविद्यालय के आँगन में कोई न कोई आयोजन होता रहता. एक उत्सव में सब भाषाओं के अध्येताओं ने अपनी-अपनी भाषा के नृत्य संगीत की प्रस्तुति दी, हिन्दी ने भी बॉलीवुड फिल्म गीतों और नृत्य से घूम मचाई. देर रात तक खुले मैदान में कार्यक्रम चला.
मोबाइल फोन के दीवाने छात्रों का सब कुछ उसी में समाया हुआ था, सब-वे के नक़्शे से लेकर हिन्दी का शब्दकोश तक. सत्र के आरम्भ में विश्वविद्यालय परिसर में लगे इस बैनर ने मेरा ध्यान बहुत खींचा जो हर विद्यार्थी के मन का ठीक पता दे रहा था –

कोरिया के जीवन और घटना क्रम को जानने का सबसे अच्छा साधन हमारे पास कोरिया टाइम्स अखबार था जो अंग्रेज़ी भाषा में भी था. टेलीविजन में अधिकतर कार्यक्रम कोरियाई भाषा में थे.
कोरिया प्रवास की दो महत्वपूर्ण घटनाएं याद आ रही हैं.
पहली तो अप्रैल में घटित भीषण दुखद दुर्घटना ..सोलह अप्रैल की सुबह एक समाचार ने पूरे देश को विचलित कर दिया. राजधानी सिओल के दक्षिण में स्थित समुद्र-तट से पिछली रात रवाना हुआ सेवोल नाम का विशाल समुद्री जहाज गंतव्य पर पहुँचने से पहले अचानक मुसीबत में पड़ गया था. जहाज पर अन्य यात्रियों के साथ मुख्य रूप से एक विद्यालय के तीन सौ से अधिक छात्रों का समूह सवार था. ये सब छात्र स्कूल द्वारा आयोजित विनोद-यात्रा पर दूसरे द्वीप-समूह जा रहे थे. तात्कालिक प्रयत्नों के बावजूद देखते ही देखते जहाज पूरी तरह जलमग्न हो गया.. दो से भी अधिक सप्ताह तक समुद्र तट पर बचाव दल की कोशिशों के बावजूद अनुपलब्ध मृत यात्रियों के परिजनों का गुस्सा प्रकट होने लगा. घटना के लिए जिम्मेदारी स्वीकार करते हुए देश के प्रधान मंत्री ने इस्तीफा दे दिया. राष्ट्रपति ने घटना-स्थल पर पहुँचकर तमाम लापरवाहियों, कमियों-खामियों के लिए लापता व्यक्तियों के परिजनों से बिना शर्त माफी माँगी. इस सबके बीच शुरू हुआ आत्म-विश्लेषण का दौर. अखबार के सम्पादकीय और विशेष आलेख देश के सामाजिक-व्यवहार की गहरी पड़ताल में जुट गए.
कोरियावासी अपने से पूछ रहे थे कि क्या हम सचमुच विकसित देश हैं या हमारे भीतर विकसित देश होने का केवल दंभ भर है? जो देश आपत्ति में पड़े जीवन को बचाने के लिए पूरी तरह तैयार न मिला क्या वह विकसित है?
जहाज से बचाए गए स्कूल के उप-प्रधानाध्यापक ने कुछ ही समय बाद निर्जन स्थल पर पहुँच आत्महत्या कर ली, इस अंतिम सन्देश के साथ कि वे अपने आपको इसलिए माफ़ नहीं कर सकते कि बच्चों के प्रति उनका आचरण सही नहीं रहा. छात्रों को बचाने में जुटने की बजाए आत्मरक्षा की, व्यर्थ है ऐसा जीवन ! समाचारपत्र लिखते हैं कि हमारे बच्चों का आचरण हमारी कन्फ्यूशियन विचारधारा की देन है. बड़ों ने आदेश दिया अगली घोषणा तक अपने स्थान पर बने रहें, छोटों ने ईमानदारी से उसका पालन किया. लेकिन दूसरा आदेश देने के बजाय चालक–दल आत्मरक्षा में जुट गया. अखबार लिखता है कि काश ! हमने अपने बच्चों को इतना आज्ञाकारी बनना न सिखाया होता !
दूसरी घटना एक बड़ी विमान कम्पनी के स्वामी परिवार से सम्बन्ध रखती है. एक उड़ान में विमान कंपनी के मालिक की पुत्री गलत व्यवहार की दोषी पाई गई. जांच के बाद उन्हें सजा हुई, जैसे इतना ही पर्याप्त न था – उनके पिता ने पुत्री के व्यवहार के लिए क्षमा याचना मांगते हुए कहा कि पुत्री के इस व्यवहार का कारण हमारे द्वारा पालन-पोषण में रही कमी है. हम बराबर के दोषी हैं.
कोरिया में हिन्दी सिखाते हुए हमने कितना कुछ सीखा, वह इन दो घटनाओं की स्मृति में कहीं गहरे छिपा है.

बचपन से सुनती आ रही हूं अपने ही साथ देते हैं मुसीबत में, किंतु वास्तविक रूप में कभी देख नहीं पाई। अब तो लगता है अपना और अपनापन वहीं है जहां आत्मीयता बसती है। इस संस्मरण से कोरियाई लोगों की मानसिकता – बंधुत्वभाव का पता चलता है। बच्चों को दिए गए संस्कार हमसे कहीं बेहतर हैं। जलमग्न हुए जहाज के लिए प्रधान मंत्री का स्वयं को दोषी मानकर दिया गया इस्तीफा उनकी नैतिकता को दिखाता है। विमान में लड़की द्वारा किए गए गलत व्यवहार के लिए पिता का स्वयं को बराबर का दोषी माना यह दिखाता है कि आपसी रिश्तों को वहां बड़ी संजीदगी से निभाया जाता है। … आपके माध्यम से अपरिचित देश को इतनी गहराई से जानने का मौका मिल रहा है। अगली कड़ी का बेसब्री से इंतजार रहेगा। शुभकामनाएं मैम
