प्रसिद्ध लेखिका मृणाल पाण्डे की कथा सीरिज़ बच्चों को न सुनाने लायक बाल कथाएँ की यह 27वीं कहानी है। शायद ही किसी लेखक ने इतनी लम्बी कथा सीरिज़ लिखी हो। समझ लीजिए आज के ज़माने का पंचतंत्र या हितोपदेश। यह कहानी सिर के धड़ से जुदा होने और जुड़ने की है-

( पुरानी नई लोककथाओं, कहानियों, किस्सों के कण कभी अचानक ऊपर से किसी निद्राहीन कथाकार-मन की सीपी में आ टपकते हैं। बाद इसके, उसके अपने जीवन अनुभव के अछोर समंदर में वे समुद्र में छोटी बडी मछलियों, घडियालों, सूंसों, दरियाई घोडों के बीच तैरते हुए एक दिन मोती बन जाते हैं।
इधर बार बार सुनने को मिलता है, कि जिस तरह जानकारियाँ बच्चों तक नेट से बह बह कर चारों याम पहुंच रही हैं, उनके मिलेजुले असर से बच्चे जो हैं, हाय बडी जल्द मासूमियत खो कर सयाने हो रहे हैं।
दरअसल लगभग हर पुरानी कहानी में नानी, दादी या घर बाहर धूप तापते मुहल्लों के किस्सागो, तब भी ऊपर से सरल दिखती लोककथाओं की परतों में तमाम तरह के गुप्त संदेसों और गोपनीय जानकारियों के बीजाक्षर बडे जतन से बालमनों में छुपा जाते थे।वे जानते थे कि स्याणी समझ वाले बच्चे आगे जीवन यात्रा के दौरान जब जब बचपन की गठरी खोलेंगे, उन्हीं की तरह वे भी कहानियों के नीचे उनकी छुपाई परतें पाकर उसमें अपना भी कुछ जोड जायेंगे।
जैसे अमरूद कुतरनेवाला तोता फल में मिठास के बीच अपने मुख का द्रव!
अजी स्याणा होने के लिये उम्र क्या? बस कान होने चाहिये, और दिन भर की सुनी- सुनाई पर देर तक सोचनेवाला एक अदद सर!
आज की कथा के मूल में अविभाजित पंजाब के गाँवों की एक ऐसी ही कहानी है, जो किसी उनींदी दोपहर में अपनी एक अर्धविक्षिप्त पडोसी बुआ से धूप में बालों में तेल ठुंकवाते हुए बहुत पहले सुनी थी, जिनका ज़मींदार कुटुंब बडी मुश्किल से जान बचा कर पार्टीशन की मारामारी से बचता हुआ उत्तराखंड आन बसा था।)
बहुत पहले की बात है, जब इंसानी सर धड़ों से जुड़े नहीं होते थे।गरदनें तब चूडीदार होंदी थीं, और सर भी।इससे सहूलियत यह थी, कि जब चाहो, चूड़ी ढीली कर के सर हाथ में ले लो। फिर साफ सूफ करके वापस चूड़ी कस कर पूरे बन जाओ।
इंसानों की देही और सर तब ऐसे ना जुडे होते थे कि जुदा होते ही इंसान खतम हो जाये!
उन दिनों भी गांव जवार में माँ बाप दिन रात खेतों में खट कर या जंगलों में जिनावर घुमाघुमू कर शाम तक खाना-पानी लाते थे।जब जवान लोग फसल उपजाने बटोरने चले जाते, बच्चे गांव के बूढों की निगरानी में तरह तरह के खेल खेला किये थे।
हुडदंग करने पर उनको टोका नहीं जाता था।
होमवर्क ना था।बस सीधे वर्क या हुडदंग।
बच्चों की फौजां की बस मौजां ही मौजां! सर खुजलाता हो, तो उतार कर दादी या नानी को थमा जाते, कि मेरे पाली खेल के वापिस आने तक जूं बीन दीजो!
धूल मिट्टी भरे खेल में सर का के काम? सर होय तो डर होय! दादी नानी को सर थमा आये तो समझो डर उनकी गोद में गया!
तब लडकियाँ भी खेल-कूद में कतई डरपोक ना हुआ करै थीं। एक से उटंग कच्छे कुरते सभी बच्चे पहनते थे। केस सबके लंबे।
इससे दादियाँ नानियाँ भी खुश रहतीं।बडी मुहब्बत और जतन से वे उनके खेल कर आने से पेश्तर गोद में रखे पोते पोतियों, धेवते-धेवतियों के सरों से जूं बीन कर उनके घोंसला जैसे केसों को साफ मुलतानी मिट्टी या दही बेसन से धो देतीं।केस सूख गये तो तेल ठोंक कर बिखरे बालों पर कंघी फेरती हुई गुत्तें भी गूंथ कर धर देतीं।आंखों में काजल आंज कर गाल पर दिठौने लगा देतीं।
ऊपरवाला नज़रे बद से बचाये!
बच्चे खेल से वापिस आते और अपने अपने सर वापिस ले कर चूडियाँ कस या कसवा कर फिर लडके लडकियाँ बन कर खाने को घर चले जाते थे।
अब तुम पूछोगे कि क्या कभी ऐसा भी हुआ कि गलती से दो बच्चों के सर एक दूसरे के धड़ पर कस गये?
हुआ।और दो बच्चों ने शरारत शरारत में सरों की चुपचाप ऐसे अदलाबदली कर ली कि किसी को पता न चले।दोनो गहरे दोस्त और बला के शैतान थे।दोनो के घरवालों में कतई ना पटै।पुश्तैनी झगडा था।घरों में आना जाना मने था।बस खेल के मैदान में मिलते बच्चे।निगरानी करते बूढों की बीनाई कमज़ोर होने से वो बहुत दूर तलक देख नहीं सकते थे।सो दो दुश्मन खानदान के दो बालक गहरे दोस्त बन गये।
बच्चे दिन रात के लडाई झगडे से आज़िज़ हो चुके थे।सो उन्ने एक दिन तय किया कि वे अपने घरों की अदलाबदली कर के देखेंगे कि झगडे की जड किस तरफ और कैसी हैगी।
लिहाज़ा सरों की अदलाबदली के बाद दोनो एक दूजे की तरफ देख कर मुस्कुराये और एक दूसरे के घर चल दिये कि देखें माजरा क्या है?
उन दिनों किसम किसम की कोठियाँ ना थीं।गांव के हर घर में रहन सहन एक जैसा।एक ही जैसा खान पान।दिन भर की मशक्कत के बाद महतारी बाप भी इतने थके थकाये होते कि बच्चों को सिरफ मुख से ही पहचानते थे।बातचीत का टैम कहाँ।बस बहुत हुडदंग सुनी तो जो सामने पडा पकड कर उसे पीट दिया।
अजी तब तो हमारे तुम्हारे घरों में लोगां की इतनी सारी संतानें होती थीं कि कई बापों को तो यू भी पता ना था कि उनके कुल कितने मुंडे ते कितनी कुडियाँ हैं।
सो बच्चे आराम से एक दूसरे के घर रहने लगे।सुबह जब खेलने को निकले तो कुछ देर बेरी तले छुप कर खुसुरपुसुर करी कि तेरे हां जे हुआ, वगैरे।पर साल बीत गया और वे यही जान सके कि कभी ज़मीन की बंटवार का कोई मसला था जिसका असल नक्शा कहाँ गया किसी तरफ के खानदान को पता न था।
अब कहो।
कुछ साल बाद लडके जवान हुए और एक साथ नक्शा खोजने निकले।शायद वह वैसे ही पाताल में जा छुपा था जैसे सिंधु नदी की बहन सरस्वती नदी!
लडकों के मेलजोल से घरवाले परेशान रहते।अरे लड़-भिड़ कर ही तो मरद की पहचान बनती है।अब उनमें दोस्ती हो जाये हंसी मज़ाक का सिलसिला चल निकले तो कैसे हो।बापों के मरने पर दोनो दोस्तों ने अपने हिस्से के खेतों के मुरब्बे, जो कि अगल बगल ही थे, एक कर लिये।यहाँ तक कि दोनो ने एक दूसरे की बहन से ब्याह करके दोस्ती पर मुहर लगवा ली।
जिमीन साझा, पानी साझा, घरों के मरदों जोरुओं के साँझा चूल्हे।दोनो की दोस्ती से उनके खेत खानदान लहलहा गये।
उनकी देखा देखी आस पास के कई और नौजवान भी पुश्तैनी दुश्मनियों पर स्वाह डाल कर बगलगीर यार बनने लगे।
पर ऐसी दोस्ती से हर कोई खुश न था।
लोहार परेशान, जो लडंतों के हेत हथियार बनाता था।सुतार परेशान जो दराँतियों, की मूंठ और लाठियों किे फाल गढता था।कुम्हार परेशान, जो लड़ाई-भिड़ाई में बार बार मरनेवालों के अंतिम करम को फचाक् से फोड़नेवाले घड़े बनाता था।और हकीम-नाई अलग परेशान जो कानाफूसी और मरहम पट्टी कर के पेट पालते आये थे।यहां तक कि रुदालियों के पेट पर भी लात पडने लगी क्यों कि न ज़्यादे जुद्ध होते न उनको जोद्धाओं की लहासों पर पछाड खा कर स्यापा करने को बुलाया जाता।
जब सराध का दान लेनेवाले बामण और बाहर गाँव से किराये पर बुलवाये जानेवाले लठैत भी अधपेट रहने लगे तो कुछ पेशेवर लडवैये और फूट पडव्वे मसले का हल निकालने को बुलाये गये।एक बडी सभा हुई और उन्ने हाथ में जमीन की मिट्टी ले कर कसम खाई कि गाँवहित में हम मामले फिर उलझा कर, बिरादरी में जगह जगह लडाइयाँ शुरू करवा कर ही रहेंगे।
उनने जे भी संकलप लिया कि अगर पुराना नक्शा, जिसके कारण जगह जगह लकीरें खींची मेटी जाती रहीं, जिनके दोनो तरफ के जवान अपने हिस्से को हमलावर चोट्टों से बचाने को एक दूसरे के सर फोडते रहे, न भी मिला तो के? वो नया नक्शा बनायेंगे।भले उनको मर मिटना न पडे!
ये मर मिटनेवाला फिकरा बहुत दिन बाद गाँव में उठा तो जल्द घर घर में उसकी गूंज सुनाई देने लगी।
धीमे धीमे कई तरह के फूट पडौव्वे कार्यकर्ता चारों तरफ फैल गये।उनकी कोशिशों का बडा गहरा असर हुआ और बात बात में लोहे के डंडे लाठी भंजाने, सडकों पर काँटे बिछाने और खाई खंदक खोदनेवालों की माँग उठने लगी।वे भी जत्थों में ऐसे उपजने लगे जैसे कभी गायब ही न हुए हों।
सर की अदला बदली कर चुके दोनो दोस्तों को यह सब अजीब लगता था।एक दिन उनमें से एक ने किसी फूट प्रचारक से पूछा कि भाई, मार कर मिटा देने या मर मिटनेवाली बात का मतबल के है?
मार पीट-प्रचारक जल्दी में था, उसकी बोई फूट की बेल बगल के चार घरों तक फैल कर पाँचवे में परवान चढ रही थी।उसके पास न बखत थो, ना धीरज।बात को अधबीच काट कर बोला इस बात में समझने को के है? मारो,या मिट जाओ!
अगला बोला समझा नहीं, तनिक।
फूट प्रचारक ने उठाई एक इस्पाती लाठी, ‘चल समझाता हूं तेरे को साले !’ और दन्न से दे मारी उसके सर पर!
सारी जिरह खतम!
दूसरी इस बात को जल्द समझ गया।
वह तुरत भागा और कहीं से एक ऐसा पुराना नक्शा उठा लाया जो किसी की समझ में न आवे।
अब गांव के बीच बडा सा मेज लगाया गया जिसके चारों तरफ सारे लडाई भिडाई के समर्थक बैठ गये।इब नक्शे को खोला तो उसमें चारों तरफ त्रां त्रां की गिचपिची लकीरें।कभी गड्मड्ड और कभी बुरी तरह नागिन सी बल खाती हुई।जिमीन तौ दिखती ही ना थी।बस इसके बाद लडाई भिडाई फिर शुरू हो गई।दूजा जिसका दोस्त मरा था, सारी जमीन का इकलौता मालिक और गांव का बडा दंगाई बन बैठा।
इस बीच बताते हैं कि जब मरे हुए की लहास को नहलाया जा रहा था तो उसकी असली माँ पछाड खा कर गिर गई कि ‘जे तौ मेरे पूत की लहास है।इसकी जाँघ में जे अमलतास के फूल का जो अजीब निसान है वो इसकी पहचान है।अरे इसकी मुंडी पे जिसको सर लग्यो है सो साइत हमारो जमाई है!
‘परभू जे का कद्दिया आपजी ने?’
खैर मायें तो घूटों किे पीछे पछाड खाती रोती रहती हैं।रुदालियों की टीम के गा गा कर किये जा रहे सियापे के साथ टिसुवे बहाते लोगों की हाय तौबा में एक माँ का रोना, उसके नाले फरियाद भला कौन सुनता?
पर भगवान सुनते हैं माँओं की।भगवान को लग गई।अब भगवान जी ने तय किया कि मनुख जात को न तौ सांति सुहाती है, न ही मेल जोल।तौ जब इतने जतन से गढे सर मनुख जात को सोच विचार के लिये नहीं, धड से काटने या कटवाने के वास्ते ही चाहियें, तो उनको के पडी है अंय? कि वे सरों, गरदनों को चूडीदार बनायें?
उसके बाद से सब लोग कंधों पर जमा जमाया सर लेकर ही जनमने लगे।
