मैं तुझे शाप देती हूँ, कृष्ण। यह करते हुए मुझे घृणा होती है, मगर मैं तुझे शाप देती हूँ। तुमने इन सारे आदमियों के साथ किया है उसके लिए मैं तुम्हें कदापि माफ़ नहीं कर सकती हूँ। तुमने जो मेरे पुत्रों के साथ किया है उसके लिए मैं तुम्हें कभी क्षमा नहीं कर सकती हूँ। देखो वहाँ पड़ा है दुर्योधन! देखो दु:शासन की ओर देखो! देखो मेरे अन्य पुत्रों को, सब मृत पड़े हैं! मेरे सारे पुत्र मृत है, प्रत्येक, सौ के सौवों। तुम्हारे द्वारा मारे जा कर। मुझे मालूम है यदि तुम चाहते तो उन्हें बचा सकते थे।
और देखो मेरी पुत्र वधुओं को, कृष्ण! देखो उन्हें। उन्हें पता नहीं है कि अपने मृत पतियों के शव पर रोएँ अथवा अपने पुत्रों के। अपने खुले बालों, पागलों जैसी आँखों के साथ, अपने पागल हृदय और पागल भाषा के साथ, पागलपन से ग्रसित यहाँ से वहाँ भाग रही हैं। असूर्यपश्या, बिना सिर ढ़ंके, बिना दासियों के संग-साथ के अपने अंतरमहल से बाहर न आने वाली, जिन्हें संसार ने कभी खुले में नहीं देखा, कैसी उन्मत्त की भाँति भाग रही हैं। अब उन्हें देखो, कृष्ण, उनके कपोल अश्रुओं से भींगे हुए हैं, आँखें लाल हैं, अनियंत्रित होंठ काँप रहे हैं, अनर्गल शब्दों में वे अपना दु:ख प्रकट कर रही हैं। शब्द जो समझ से बाहर हैं, क्योंकि घुटे हुए हैं। देखो, व्यर्थ सान्त्वना देने और व्यर्थ की सान्त्वना पाने के लिए स्त्रियाँ कैसे एक-दूसरे को गले लगा रही हैं। देखो, कैसे वे अपनी छातियाँ पीट रही हैं, बाल नोंच रही हैं। दारुण दु:ख से उन्होंने अपने चेहरे खरोंच लिए हैं और उनके कोमल चेहरों पर रक्त की लकीरें हैं। उनकी चीखें सुनो, कृष्ण, रणक्षेत्र में भरा हुआ और दूर पहाड़ों में अनुगूंजित होता उनका विलाप सुनों।
देखो, अन्य वीर कैसे मृत पड़े हुए हैं, उनका शरीर पक्षी नोंच रहे हैं, जानवरों का शिकार हो रहे हैं वे। यह देखो, आचार्य द्रोण पड़े हैं, वहाँ उनके शत्रु द्रुपद पड़े हैं, वहाँ धृष्टद्यूम के पुत्र, वहाँ अपराजेय कर्ण, वहाँ जयद्रथ और उधर अभिमन्यु। उधर लेटे भीष्म को देखो, शल्य, भागदत्त, इधर भूरिश्रवा, उधर मेरा भाई शकुनी, इधर ब्रिहदबल, मगध का जयत्सेन, उधर कलिंग का राजा। उनकी ओर देखो कृष्ण, कैसे उनकी स्त्रियाँ उनके मृत शरीर पर पछाड़ खा रही हैं, कैसे विलाप कर रही हैं।
इन सब के लिए मैं तुझे शाप देती हूँ कृष्ण। अगर तुम चाहते तो यह युद्ध रोक सकते थे। तुम इन मनुष्यों का जीवन बचा सकते थे। ये तुम हो जो इन स्त्रियों को रुला रहे हो, कृष्ण। कृष्ण कपोलों पर बहते हर आँसू के कतरे के उत्तरदायी तुम हो। हजारों हृदयों से उठने वाले, अतल गहराई से उठने वाले दारुण चीख, प्रत्येक विलाप का कारण तुम हो, कृष्ण। और इन सब के लिए मैं तुझे शाप देती हूँ। कृष्ण, तुम्हारे लोगों का यही अंत हो। वे आपस में लड़ें, और ठीक इन लोगों की तरह मृत पड़े होंगे। ये लोग सम्मानजनक युद्ध में मरे। लेकिन तुम्हारे लोग असम्मानजनक युद्ध में शर्मनाक मृत्यु प्राप्त करें। बिना किसी कारण के गुत्थमगुत्था हो कर बिना किसी कुलीनता के, बिना किसी गरिमा के मरें। यह युद्ध अट्ठारह दिन चला, कृष्ण, मैं तुम्हें इससे दुगने साल देती हूँ, तुम्हें जीवित रहने और उनका भष्टाचार और पतन देखने के लिए। आज से छत्तीस साल, उनमें से प्रत्येक लड़ते हुए अपने शर्मनाक अंत को प्राप्त होगा। और तुम्हारी स्त्रियाँ, ठीक इन्हीं विलाप करती, चीखती स्त्रियों की तरह विलाप करेंगी, चीखेंगी।
कृष्ण, एक समय था जब मैं तुम्हारी प्रशंसा करती थी। इस धरा पर कदाचित किसी अन्य मनुष्य से अधिक तुम पर श्रद्धा करती थी। मेरे जीवन में जो कमी थी वो तुम थे – प्रकाश और आशा। प्रकाश जो आशा देता है। आशा जो मजबूती देती है, लक्ष्य दिखाती है, राह दिखाती है, तुम्हारा मार्गदर्शन करती है। प्रकाश और आशा जो तुम्हें जीवन से जोड़ती है। प्रकाश और आशा जो बताती है कि जीवित रहना सुंदर है।
एक समय मैंने प्रकाश और आशा को जाना था। उस समय मैं गांधार में छोटी बच्ची थी। गांधार की सुबला और राजा गांधार की प्रशंसित पुत्री। अपने पिता द्वारा दुलारी जाती, अपने भाइयों की चहेती। मेरे पिता की प्रजा द्वारा पूजी जाती। क्योंकि, हमारी प्रजा प्रसन्न थी। हमारी धरा प्रसन्न थी। मेरे पिता बुद्धिमान राजा थे, न्यायप्रिय और प्रजा-वत्सल। और उदार हृदय। पिता को हमारी भूमि पर गर्व था। वे कहते कि सभ्यता का प्रारंभ गांधार से हुआ है। गंधर्व, जैसा कि हमारे लोग कहे जाते हैं, ख्यात संगीतज्ञ थे। मूर्तिकला, चित्रकला, नृत्य, किसी भी कला का नाम लो, वह या तो गांधार से निकला अथवा संसार में सबसे अधिक वहीं पल्लवित हुआ। धर्म की हमारी अपनी रीत थी – जहाँ स्त्रियाँ धरा की सर्वाधिक दैवी अभिव्यक्ति के रूप में पूजी जाती थी। हमारे समाज में स्त्रियाँ पुरुष द्वारा अधिकृत पशु नहीं थीं, वरन अपने आप में मनुष्य थीं। हमारे आस-पास के अधिकाँश भागों की तरह नहीं, हम, गांधार की स्त्रियाँ शिक्षित थीं, और कई तो विद्वान थीं। स्वयं मैं, अपनी युवावस्था में अर्थशास्त्र, धन के विज्ञान की ज्ञाता के रूप में जानी जाती थी।
तब मेरे जीवन में प्रकाश था। तब मेरे जीवन में आशा थी।
और तब अंधकार आया। और आशा नष्ट हो गई।
मेरे जीवन में भीष्म के रूप में अंधकार आया, जो प्रत्येक व्यावहारिक कार्य के लिए मेरे श्वसुर बनने वाले थे। कुछ लोग उन्हें श्रद्धेय भीष्म बुलाते हैं। कुछ लोग उन्हें भयंकर भीष्म कहते हैं। वे मुझे अपने अंधे भतीजे की वधु बनाना चाहते थे। चूँकि वे उसे अंधा नहीं बुलाना चाहते थे अत: उसके लिए एक बड़ा अच्छा नाम दिया। वे उसे प्रज्ञा-चक्षु पुकारते थे, क्योंकि वे कहते कि प्रज्ञा उसकी आँखें थीं। वह कुछ और नहीं बस कलापूर्ण, चालाक निकला।
जब मुझे पता चला कि मेरे पास उससे विवाह करने के अलावा कोई और चारा नहीं है तो मैंने भीष्म की माँग के समक्ष समर्पण कर दिया। लेकिन मैंने स्वयं से एक प्रण किया – मेरा विद्रोह ऐसा होगा जैसा अतीत में किसी अन्य स्त्री ने कभी नहीं चुना होगा। मैं खुद की आँखों पर जीवन भर के लिए पट्टी बाँध लूँगी। अगर उन्हें लगा कि अंधा पति मेरे लिए उपयुक्त था तो उसके लिए आँखों पर पट्टी बँधी पत्नी सटीक थी। भरत राजकुमारों में ज्येष्ठ पुत्र होने के बावजूद धृतराष्ट्र का अपने पूर्वजों की गद्दी पर कोई अधिकार न था। पाण्डु, मेरे देवर और उसके छोटे भाइयों को राज्य करना था।
इस धरा पर मात्र एक व्यक्ति था जो सच में धृतराष्ट्र को प्रेम करता था। अपने संपूर्ण हृदय से चाहता था। उसकी माँ उसे प्यार नहीं करती थी – वह उस पर थोपा गया बच्चा था। वह गर्भवती हो सके इसलिए नियोग के लिए आए ऋषि को देख कर वह भयभीत हो गई और उसने अपनी आँखें बंद कर लीं। कहते हैं इसीलिए वह अंधा पैदा हुआ। जो भी हो उसकी माँ कभी धृतराष्ट्र को अपने संपूर्ण हृदय से प्रेम न कर सकी। न ही उसके दूसरे भाई, विदुर, वे सदैव पाण्डु के निकट थे। भीष्म के लिए वे निराशा थे। लेकिन पाण्डु उन्हें अपने हृदय और आत्मा से चाहते थे।
बेचारे पाण्डु!
हमारे अंधकार के संसार में, धृतराष्ट्र और मेरे अंधकार के संसार में, दुर्योधन उत्पन्न हुआ। दुर्योधन हमारे अंधकार का बालक था।
तब तक पृथा अपने प्रथम बालक, युधिष्ठिर को जन्म दे चुकी थी। अपने पिता पाण्डु के सिंहासन के वारिस को।
जन्म के समय धुर्योधन गधे की तरह रेंका था। गधों ने उसके रेंकने को सुन कर रेंकना शुरु कर दिया और उनके रोने से जल्द ही राजभवन भर गया – ऐसा लगा मानो हस्तिनापुर के सारे गधे रेंक रहे हों। उल्लू बोलने लगे। कौवे, सियार, सारे अशुभ जीवों ने उनका साथ दिया और चारों ओर उनके अशुभ कौवा रोहन का कोलाहल भर गया। और मुझे पता चला कि मेरे जीवन का अंधकार पूर्ण हो गया है।
मैंने धृतराष्ट्र से बच्चे का त्याग करने की विनती की। त्याग दो उसे, मैंने उनसे विनती की। राज्य के लिए उसे त्याग दो, मैंने याचना की। मैंने उनसे कहा कि इस उद्देश्य के लिए एक बच्चे का बलिदान दोषरहित होगा, भले ही वह बच्चा अपना हो। लेकिन धृतराष्ट्र के लिए यह उनका अपना बच्चा था। उनकी प्रथम संतान। उनका अपना रक्त, अपनी मांस-मज्जा। वह उसे त्यागने के बारे में एक शब्द सुनने को तैयार न थे। विधि को कोई नहीं रोक सकता है – उन्होंने वही खोखले शब्द कहे जिन्हें, जब कोई उत्तर न होता वे दोहराते थे।
और अब मैं जान गई हूँ कि जिस अंधकार में मैं फ़ँस गई थी उससे निकलने का कोई रास्ता न था। मैं विश्वास करती हूँ कि मैं आशाहीनता की अतल गहराई में थी। लेकिन यह मेरा अनाड़ीपन और भोलापन था। मेरे संसार में अंधकार नित गहन होता गया।
धृतराष्ट्र की देखभाल में राजधानी छोड़ कर पाण्डु जिस वन में गए वहीं उनकी मृत्यु हो गई। उनके बच्चे और पृथा रहने के लिए हस्तिनापुर लौट आए। दुर्योधन ने पहले ही दिन से उनसे घृणा की। उसके लिए वे भाई नहीं शत्रु थे। जिस सिंहासन को वह अपना मानता था, उसके प्रतिद्वंद्वी।
जिस दिन वह जन्मा था उसी दिन जन्मे भीम से वह सबसे अधिक घृणा करता था। दुर्योधन ने उसे विष देने का प्रयास किया – नहीं, यह प्रयास नहीं था, उसे वास्तव में विष दिया गया, एक हाथी के मरने लायक भयंकर विष दिया गया। भीम बच गया – शायद उस जल से जिसमें उसे फ़ेंक दिया गया था।
मेरे पुत्र ने पाण्डु के बच्चों और पृथा को वरणावत भेज दिया और वहाँ लाक्षागृह बना कर उसमें उन्हें जला कर मारने का प्रयास किया। वह पूरा-पूरा अभिनेता था, हमने बरसों उनका सोग मनाया। जब तक कि वे जीवित और विजयी हो कर लौटे नहीं। आग से बच कर और द्रुपद की पुत्री से विवाह करके, अधिक बलशाली और मजबूत हो कर। अब पांचाल का राजा उनका श्वसुर तथा मित्र था।
मैंने दुर्योधन से बात करना बंद कर दिया था। मैंने धृतराष्ट्र को तब त्याग दिया था जब मेरे गर्भ में दुर्योधन था और उन्होंने अपनी शैय्या पर एक शूद्र स्त्री को आमंत्रित किया था।
अब मुझे पक्का विश्वास है कि यह वास्तविक अंधकार है।
मेरे पुत्र ने एक बार फ़िर मुझे गलत सिद्ध कर दिया।
भरत राज्य विभाजित हुआ और खांडवप्रस्थ पृथा के पुत्रों को दे दिया गया। वहाँ उन्होंने तुम्हारी सहायता से ख्यात इंद्रप्रस्थ बनाया। जहाँ युधिष्ठिर ने राजसूय यज्ञ किया और जिसमें राजाओं की सभा में सर्वोच्च सम्मान अग्रपूजा तुम्हारी की गई। इंद्रप्रस्थ के कोष में धरा के हर कोने से सम्पत्ति बरसने लगी।
इतिहास में किसी कुरु द्वारा किए गए निकृष्टतम कार्यों के बीज वहाँ पड़े। शीघ्र ही युधिष्टर को दुर्योधन के साथ द्यूत क्रीड़ा के लिए हस्तिनापुर आमंत्रित किया गया। दुर्योधन की ओर से शकुनी खेल रहा था। युधिष्ठिर ने वह किया जो किसी अन्य कुरु राजा ने नहीं किया था। उसने अपना सब कुछ दाँव पर लगा दिया: अपना सारा राज्य, दासों सहित अपनी सारी सम्पत्ति, ब्राह्मणों को छोड़ कर, उन्हें दाँव पर नहीं लगाया जा सकता है, अपने सारे लोग, अपने सारे भाई, स्वयं को और अंत में द्रुपद की पुत्री, कुरुओं की प्रतिष्ठित वधु को। और दुर्योधन ने वह किया जो किसी अन्य राजा ने नहीं किया था। रजस्वला होने के कारण एकल वस्त्र धारण किए हुई द्रोपदी को केश से खींच कर उसने राजाओं की सभा में बुला मँगाया। वहाँ उसके पतियों के सामने उसका अकथनीय अपमान किया गया।
कृष्ण, तब से एक लंबे समय से मैं तुम्हारे बारे में सुनती रही हूँ। आखीरकार, तुम कुटुंब हो। तुम पृथा के भतीजे हो और उसके तथा उसके बच्चों के पास आते रहे हो। और जब हम पहली बार मिले तब से ही तुमने मुझे प्रेम किया है, जैसे शुरु से मैंने तुम्हें किया है। मैंने सुना है कि तुम जहाँ भी गए वहीं जादू हुआ और ये जादू मैं अपने अंध संसार में भी चाहती थी। मुझे मालूम था कि यदि मेरे संसार में कोई प्रकाश ला सकता है तो वो तुम हो, तुम जादूगर। क्योंकि मेरे संसार में प्रकाश लाने के लिए जादू की आवश्यकता थी।
जब पहली बार तुम झुके और तुमने मेरे पैर स्पर्श किए तभी मुझे मालूम था कि तुम वह कर सकते हो। मैंने तुम्हें ऊपर उठाया था, तुम्हारा माथा सूँघने के बाद अपने हाथों से तुम्हारा चेहरा अनुभव किया था और तब एक लंबे समय तक अपनी जुड़ी हथेलियों में तुम्हारा हाथ पकड़े रखा था, हमारे बीच एक शब्द का भी आदान-प्रदान नहीं हुआ था। मैं तुम्हें जान गई थी। समझ गई कौन हो तुम, क्या हो तुम।
शिव की आराधक, मैं सदैव से विश्वास करती आई हूँ कि धर्म विजय लाता है। यतो धर्मास्ततो जय: जहाँ धर्म खड़ा होता है, वहीं विजय रहती है। जब मैं तुम्हारा हाथ अपनी हथेलियों में लिए खड़ी थी, मेरा हृदय फ़ुसफ़ुसाया: यतो कृष्णस्ततो जय: जहाँ कृष्ण खड़े हैं, वही विजय रहती है।
तब मैंने अपने हृदय में प्रार्थना की कि जैसे तुम पृथा के पुत्रों के साथ खड़े हो, मेरे पुत्रों के साथ भी खड़े होगे। तुम कौन हो, यह जानते हुए मैंने यह जोर से कहने की आवश्यकता अनुभव नहीं की। आखीरकार, तुम्हारी आवश्यकता मेरे पुत्रों को पृथा के पुत्रों से अधिक थी। पृथा के पुत्रों को तुम्हारी आवश्यकता बल और शक्ति पाने के लिए थी, मेरे पुत्रों को तुम्हारी आवश्यकता आध्यात्मिक उद्धार के लिए थी।
कृष्ण, तुम मेरे पुत्रों के साथ क्यों नहीं खड़े हुए? तुमने मेरे पुत्रों से वैसे ही मित्रता क्यों नहीं की जैसी पृथा के पुत्रों से की? मैं तुम्हारे लिए पृथा से भिन्न कैसे थी? क्या मैंने तुम्हें उतना ही प्रेम नहीं किया जितना उसने किया? अगर तुम अवसर देते तो क्या दुर्योधन तुम्हें उसी आदर के साथ स्वीकार न करता जिसके साथ अर्जुन ने तुम्हें स्वीकारा?
मैं चाहती थी कि तुम युधिष्ठिर के राजसूय यज्ञ के तत्काल बाद द्वारका नहीं चले गए होते। तब तुम द्यूत क्रीड़ा होने को रोक सकते थे। और सब बातों के बावजूद अभी भी मेरा विश्वास है कि द्यूत क्रीड़ा नहीं होती, युद्ध नहीं हुआ होता।
पांडवों ने राज्य के लिए युद्ध नहीं लड़ा। उन्होंने द्रौपदी के सम्मान के लिए युद्ध लड़ा। इसीलिए उस युद्ध में मैंने दुर्योधन को आशीर्वाद देने से इंकार किया। वो अट्ठारहों दिन युद्ध क्षेत्र में जाने के पूर्व सुबह मेरा आशीर्वाद लेने आता रहा। और उन प्रत्येक दिन मैंने उसे आशीर्वाद देने से इंकार किया। मेरे मुँख से केवल यही निकला, यतो धर्मस्ततो जय:। कभी नहीं, कदापि नहीं मैंने उससे कहा, विजयी भव, विजयी होवो। एक बार भी नहीं। यह इसलिए क्योंकि मैं जानती थी कि मेरे पुत्र ने जो नहीं किया जाना चाहिए वह किया है। द्यूत सभा में द्रोपदी के साथ जो हुआ, वह भरतों के राजकुमार तो क्या, किसी को भी नहीं करना चाहिए।
यह ठीक है कि द्यूत क्रीड़ा तुम्हारी अनुपस्थिति में हुई। और उसके पीछे-पीछे युद्ध आया। लेकिन फ़िर भी क्या तुम मेरे पुत्रों का जीवन छोड़ नहीं सकते थे, कृष्ण? युद्ध समाप्त होने पर भीम से मैंने एक प्रश्न पूछा था। मैंने उससे पूछा था अगर उसने मेरा एक पुत्र नहीं छोड़ दिया होता? मुझे वही प्रश्न तुमसे पूछने दो, मेरे लिए, तुम मेरा एक पुत्र छोड़ सकते थे? क्या वे बराबर के दुष्ट थे? मुझे और स्पष्ट करने दो, क्या विकर्ण दूसरों जितना ही बुरा था? विकर्ण, द्यूत सभा में विदुर के अलावा आवाज उठाने वाला एकमात्र व्यक्ति? जब भीष्म ने द्रोपदी के लिए कुछ कहने से इंकार किया तब वह बोला। वह उसके लिए बोला जब द्रोण और कृप चुप थे, जब युधिष्ठिर चुप था। तुम मेरे लिए उसे छोड़ सकते थे?
सच तो यह है, कृष्ण, क्या एक बार भी तुम दुर्योधन के प्रति दयालु हुए? उसे भी एक मित्र की आवश्यकता थी। असल में, उसे किसी से भी अधिक मित्र की आवश्यकता थी। और उसे तुम्हारे जैसे मित्र की आवश्यकता थी। मेरा भाई शकुनी उसके लिए उचित नहीं था। कर्ण उसके लिए सही नहीं था। तुम उसके सटीक मित्र हो सकते थे। स्मरण रहे, वह अंधकार का बालक था और तुम प्रकाश और आशा हो। अंधकार के बालक का संसार बिना प्रकाश का होता है, बिना आशा का होता है। तुम्हें उसके जीवन में यह प्रकाश और आशा लानी चाहिए थी।
प्रकाश और आशा के संसार में किसी को प्रकाश और आशा लाने की जरूरत नहीं होती है। दिन को दीपक नहीं चाहिए होता है। यह दुर्योधन था जिसे तुम्हारी सर्वाधिक आवश्यकता थी। इसके बावजूद तुम उसके जीवन में नहीं आए।
कृष्ण, क्या इस संसार में कोई ऐसा है जो उद्धार की सीमा के बाहर है? क्या इस संसार में कोई ऐसा है जिस डूबते हुए को तुम हाथ पकड़ कर नहीं बाहर नही निकाल सकते?
मेरे पुत्रों को तुम्हारी आवश्यकता थी, कृष्ण। कृष्ण मेरे पुत्र तुम्हारी पात्रता के योग्य थे। फ़िर भी तुम उनके लिए असफ़ल हुए।
तुम कुरु की सभा में शांति की अपील करने आए। तुमने उसकी भरसक विनती की। और तुमने वहाँ अपनी शक्ति प्रदर्शित की – दिखाया असल में तुम कौन हो।
अच्छा है, कृष्ण। लेकिन मैं विस्मृत नहीं कर सकती हूँ कि शांति की विनती करने आने के पूर्व तुम द्रोपदी से युद्ध की प्रतिज्ञा कर आए थे। तुमने उसे पक्का कहा था कि युद्धक्षेत्र में कौरव रक्त बहेगा। वह अपने केश दु:शासन के रक्त में भिंगो कर बाँध सकेगी। केश जिन्हें छूने का पाप दु:शासन ने किया था, उसे रजस्वला और एकल वस्त्र में होते हुए क्रूरतापूर्वक खींच कर द्यूत सभा में लाने का पाप।
